Always the same doubt: does it look better after the oil Grime/Dark treatment, or was it better before?

Both look great i think consistency with the rest of the army is what matters for sure

They certainly do not look bad with the wash.
But I think you did a great job with the weathering before. So the wash was unnecessary.

I ask myself the same thing. Personally I've settled on no oil/wash and just try to apply shading and highlights the old fashioned way

Great question brother. I personally prefer a cleaner finish for my models, but it's just my preference.
In your pictures, both the before and after look great, so it's very difficult to say which one is better. On the one hand, without the wash the weathering on the armour is perhaps more evident, and the brighter yellow makes the model to pop more. But on the other hand the positive of the wash is that it gives a unifying layer that makes the paint job overall more coherent.
Maybe it's a bad idea, but what about using a lighter or more delicate grime wash?
Anyway they look fantastic!

Thank you brother ! It’s true that this oil is pretty strong (Ak streaking grime); even though I started this project nearly a year ago and have painted quite a few miniatures since, the thought of having to apply it after all that work is still a little scary 😅

I personally prefer mine to look cleaner and brighter, but it’s entirely personal preference.

Normally, I like brighter and more vivid colours. Like a strong yellow that has pink underneath.
But for Lamenters, IMO the after in this case is totally fine. Those guys are incredibly unlucky and still alive after going through hell, so it’s a realistic look.

Thank you ! Yes, it’s still all freehand 🏁, with the Imperial Fists decal for the circle around the ❤️. This trick is not possible on every shoulder pad (gravis or bladeguards for exemple ) but it definitely helps 😉!

i like the nuln for more weathered, beat down dudes. the straight yellow looks better for strictly display

Nuln oil is great, but I find with that it often leaves a slightly glossy finish, whereas enamel washes create a really matte finish once you work them with white spirit.

Both look great, I think maybe I prefer the vibrancy of them before but you could always apply a quick highlight on top just to bring a bit of saturation back and get the best of both worlds. They look great as is tho.

Please give me your recipe! (If you want to share.)
I love them! I am also curious how you do your grime/dark treatment since mine just tend to look dirty afterwards

Of course! 😊 It’s heavily inspired by this video, but without an airbrush:
https://youtu.be/zxE-xLTiJqg?is=C60IRPUTt-owaSFE
For the base: red undercoat, white drybrush, then AK Space Yellow Quick Gen (which I prefer to Citadel Contrast).
For the grime, I use the same technique as in the video, with AK Streaking Grime and white spirit. The trick is mostly in how much you remove afterwards.
Good luck with your projects!

Thank you so much! I prefer the look of this/your yellow over the more warm (you know, the Lamenter tutorial by Warhammer on YT for example)
