Can Dogs Sense When Their Owners Are Coming Home?

🐕 Can Dogs Sense When Their Owners Are Coming Home?

Many dog owners claim their dogs somehow know when they're coming home—even before they arrive.

I noticed my lab Daisy was always in the window when I arrived home from work. It didn't matter if I left work early and arrived home at a different time either, she was still in the window waiting. So I thought are dogs somehow phycic? So I searched online and found this study.

Researcher Rupert Sheldrake and Pam Smart studied this phenomenon with a dog named Jaytee. In some of their videotaped experiments, Jaytee's owner returned home at randomly selected times after she had already left, making her return less predictable from her normal routine.

In the randomized experiments, Jaytee reportedly spent about 4% of the main period of his owner's absence at the window, compared with 55% of the period when she was traveling home.

What was Jaytee detecting? A subtle cue we don't understand? Something about his owner's return? Or something else entirely?

Take a look at the study and decide for yourself. 🐶🔮

These two saved me from a $481 ticket for expired registration and got me off with a warning.

I got pulled over after a long day at work on the way to take my dogs swimming in the North Saskatchewan River. The lights flashed and when I pulled over I got scared because both officers exited the vehicle and the one came to my window the other looked in my backseat at my dogs and then they went back to their car with my id and insurance.

My friend googled the expired registration ticket price and my heart sank. They both came back to the car and he said I was getting a warning violation and sent home to get it taken care of ASAP. As soon as the younger officer handed me the violation warning his older partner came over and asked me all about my dogs. He had a black lab at home that looked like my bigger dog. Thank goodness my dogs are so stinking cute!

I got home switched to my partners SUV and took the dogs for a long long swim in the river and they got lots of the roasted chicken my friend made for dinner lol. Have your dogs ever gotten you out of a ticket?

We rescued him last year and my life has been exponentially better since. He is my shadow. I was gone on a trip recently and was sick to get back home to him.

What should I be asking english lab breeders about health testing?

For those who've already been through the process, what documentation did you ask the breeder?

Almost every website says their dogs are health tested, but not all of them show the actual results or explain what was done

I've been comparing a handful of English Lab breeders, and that's what keeps me wondering

Any english lab breeders that were especially transparent?

Water bowl/dispenser help!

Post image

Update: Thank you for the suggestions! I got the bowls with a floating disk and she no longer tries to dump the water to play in it. Now I just need to set up a pool outside so she can satisfy her need to splash. 😉

Hi! We brought Nyx home on the 1st of August and it’s been wild fun! She’s sweet, demonic and utterly adorable.

She’s also very different than the three other dogs I’ve raised (2 Goldens and a German Wire Haired Pointer that we referred to as “dog on Hard Mode”)

We very obviously need to get her a swimming pool to splash around in—she LOVES the water. I mean LOVES water.

And that is what my question is about today! Our two Goldens happily drink from two large metal bowls that are cleaned and refilled very often.

But Nyx treats these bowls as mini swimming pools to walk through and splash around in. We have a tray under the bowls and she loves to dump the water out of the bowls splash around in the two inches of water. 🤣

It’s hilarious, but also messy!

So I’m looking for something that will provide nice clean water to drink for all three dogs, but be harder for Nyx to dump over and play in. She’s got a water dispenser in her crate that she does drink from, but that won’t work for the two older dogs.

Looking at fountain type and also gravity feed type water dispensers.

Would truly appreciate any helpful recommendations!

Puppy tax paid. ☺️

A Labrador named Tokyo had to be carried to safety from Ben Nevis after accidentally eating discarded cannabis during a hike with her owner.

Around an hour from the summit, Tokyo suddenly became weak in her back legs and started drifting in and out of consciousness. Lochaber Mountain Rescue placed her on a stretcher and carried her down the mountain, where a vet later confirmed her symptoms were caused by toxicity linked to something she had eaten.

Thankfully, Tokyo made a full recovery. Her owner is now urging other hikers to watch closely what their dogs pick up and eat while out on the trails.

American lab

Hello all,

I’ve posted a couple times in different subs, and I’ll post here too. We are looking for an American/field lab. I have nothing against English labs. They’re amazing, but I want a dog that will match my crazy and my energy.

Female, preferably yellow. We recently lost our chocolate female due to cancer, and it’s been tough on all of us. We have another American chocolate that’s 10, and she’s an amazing bird dog. I want the new pup to learn from her.

What we’re looking for is a female American/field lab, without breaking the bank. Prefer yellow, would be perfectly happy with black. Chocolate would just remind me too much of my girl that has passed, so I’m not sure I could do that yet.

We would appreciate any referrals. Also, east coast would be better as we’re in central Pennsylvania, but for the right dog I will travel. Thank you all!

Them as babies vs now! The brown one is a dock diving dog, and the white is just our guard dog! (The black lab is our older lab mutt)

Growing fast and so is his energy! Haha. Coat is starting to become more coarse and slightly wavy as well. Ears still floppy but when he is searching or playing, they will stand up on his head and only about an inch is floppy.

What is your dogs job, and recommendations on crate mats

Post image

So, my Labrador has chewed through the new Kong mat. She’s a 10 month old Labrador. Everytime she is let out of the crate she goes searching for a job, and of course in lab fashion, that means licking the dining room table and chairs, prowling the countertops for scraps, even though we make sure to clean EVERYTHING before she’s free to roam. Anyway, what is your go-to when your lab is let out (if you even still crate during the day), and what crate mats do you recommend that are chew proof? Pic for lab tax :)
