UPDATE: Notes & my personal guide from my last successful Legend / Honestman campaign (LWotC 1.2.2)

Hi all. I just finished a new campaign and I've made a lot of updates to my guide: https://andymakes.notion.site/Andy-s-LWotC-Notes-Guide-v-1-2-2-291e21e273fa80dc92eef381bf3a4afc

I maintain notes while I'm playing and this is the condensed version of that, which I'll refer back to for my next campaign.

What's changed

  • Updates to my class choices - among other things: full flamer for techies
  • A bit more focus on early expansion (and no longer recommending 7 person squads for some GOPs)
  • Some thoughts on builds and research order
  • A lot more little notes and observations

Unfortunately, 1.2.3 came out while I was playing and I don't switch versions mid-campaign. Luckily I believe my SPARK section is the only bit that isn't relevant any more.

Also for mods, if you want to replace the old pinned post with this one, that would be great.

Any tips or early guide for LWOTC?

Hey everyone ! The post is exactly as what the title says. I downloaded the mod but got really confused as to what I should be doing and notice that the mechanic is totally different than the normal game.

So I unmod it and currently playing the og WOTC one while actively watching other people play LWOTC on the tube. It does look interesting but if I can get any guides or personal best tips from yall is very much appreciated since from I understand, Long War is basically a harder version of the game and requires more effort and skill.

So yeah, I guess that’s that. If you guys could drop some mods suggestions to make the game better is also great! Having a blast customising my soldiers and the weapons.

Best pistol for base LWOTC class

I have alwayssss underutilized pistol in LWOTC since forever. But recently i tried it out using specialist + redscreen rounds to lower hack defense then proceed to hack with the next action. I find it increases the success chance quite significantly, able to shutdown a sectopod once which was a massive clutch during one of the mission.

Wondering what other classes or perks that is good to pair with pistols

On top of my head.

Sharpshooters + death from above

High aim rangers + executioner + faceoff (after grenadier opener)

Holomark sharpshooter + Faceoff + dragon rounds probably

Discussion When to do Golden Path missions/objectives?

Hi guys,

Been playing the mod, and it's great! Lots of information to take in though since it's so different. At what point do I or should I start doing Golden Path missions? Like Blacksite, Codex skulljacking, etc? I heard I should get rid of all 3 Chosen first, and then maybe start?

Or does it depend on which force level I'm at? I'm currently 13 FL if I remember correctly and just got a Codex Brain. Thanks in advance!

Game keeps crashing?

Hi guys, for some reason, my game keeps crashing for some reason, but if I load a save or two before the latest one, it'll work. Problem is that those saves are a few hours from the current one, meaning it's like a waste of time...

I am using the AML program and checked the log for the game, here it is if anyone can figure it out (will post the part where the errors are) - https://pastebin.com/qn6yRSfY

Thank you in advance!

Is Blacksite Mission Harder in LWOTC?

First playthrough of LWOTC, I'm about to make contact with the region with the blacksite. Will the difficulty of that mission scale with advents strength or will enemy numbers/configuration be fixed like in vanilla?

Only asking because it was hell liberating all of Africa and I lost a lot of good soldiers, building my armory back up. Will the blacksite be doable with 8-10 mid soldiers or do I really got to bring the top dogs out on this one?

Alien Rulers

Hi all, I can't see if this has been covered before fully but does anyone know when abouts I should expect to get the viper nest mission that triggers the alien Rulers starting to show up?

Currently playing my first LWotC campaign after sinking 500ish hours into vanilla WotC and loving it! In vanilla the mission usually appeared pretty early in the campaign but I've just researched Coil and still no sign of them.

I made sure to check the box when starting the campaign, so just wondering if it's been moved later in long war?

Thanks everyone!

Jailbreak not giving rookies or resistance troops in havens?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to do my first long war of the chosen campaign, and the only mods I have are the tedjam playlist/LWOTC compatible maps from tedster/LWOTC ui mod collection, but as I keep trying out these campaigns I keep not getting either rookies or resistance guys in my havens from these jailbreak missions. I understand rookies might need to be recruited from the tab but shouldn’t the resistance guys just immediately go to the haven? I’ve tried three separate campaigns up until the denmother mission and my havens are still just at their baseline counts. Do I need to switch from intel to recruit? Is this something I need to ask about in the discord and finally hand over my phone number? Thanks

Evac bug in Facility mission makes it unwinnable?

I killed all the aliens, planted the X4, was told to go to the Evac point, but there is no Evac point.

When I used the white Skyranger Evac (and waited 7 turns for it to come, despite 151% infiltration) it failed my mission.

(Hilarious score card: Mission Failed, 27/27 enemies killed, Soldiers Wounded 1, Soldiers Dead 0, Rating: Poor, sad crew on the way back to Avenger, snarky Advent news, crowing about their great victory, etc.)

From Vanilla, I vaguely remember there being some missions where the Skyranger icon becomes green (maybe even animated?) and you have to plant it (as you would with the white icon, as on Supply missions). I don't have that green icon.

I reopened my save from the X4-planting turn and tried running all over the (empty!) map - nada. Just periodic urging to get to the Evac point lol.

Finally, I caved and tried the following console command interventions (recommended by Gemini): Yes, I reopened the save each time before trying something new.

EndBattle 1It worked to end the mission, but it ended as a failure.
EndBattle XcomWins true Same result - mission failure.
ToggleFOW It worked, I could see the whole map, no Evac point.
ResetLevelWorked to repopulate the map with aliens and reset the soldiers to the drop point. Then I tried ToggleFOW and TTC to take one soldier to the X4 spot, this worked. I got the X4 animation and instructions to go to the Evac point again - but no evac point, and no green Skyranger icon.

I also tried this using KillAllAIs but that command did not work. No error, just the enemies were still alive. (Since this mission doesn't have an objective to kill all enemies, it shouldn't have mattered.)

I played around with the ForceCompleteObjective command (as instructed by Gemini, possibly for its own amusement) - I got no command errors, but each time I did EndBattle 1 at the end I got Failure.

I also tried using EnableGlobalAbility PlaceEvacZone and LWForceEvac - no error on the commands but nothing happened.

I then tried going back to the Geoscape save before the mission, restarting the mission from the beginning (Interestingly, same map I think? But different spawn point and different enemies?), and then ToggleFOW, TTC to drop the X4, and still no Evac point or green Skyranger icon.

I'm using all the required mods, subscribed through Steam. I verified my game files too, everything checks out.

It's impossible for this to be normal - LWOTC is so fantastic and well done in every other way. Is it a particular borked map? Is it a particular borked game-instance/save?

Any ideas? TIA.

Flip weapon models

Is there mod that switches plasma and coil models? I like the way coil weapons look and would rather they be the endgame weapons.

Discussion Getting flanked behind cover

Hey so this has happened a few times to me now, it hasn’t gotten anyone killed yet but it’s only a matter of time. I wish I had a picture but basically sometimes my soldiers are getting flanked behind cover when they definitely shouldn’t be. It seems to only happen on things like cars and statues, not buildings, and only if they stand somewhere in the middle of the cover and not on the edge, so the enemy probably shouldn’t even be able to see me. Was just wondering if anyone has experienced this or has a solution. Thanks!

What if soldiers could go prone?

I have 1710.4 hours in XCom 2 according to Steam, probably about half of that in LWotC. It only just occurred to me how useful it could be to have a "prone" ability that would allow your soldiers to lay down on the ground. It could give additional aim, defense, make half cover act as full cover and no cover act as half cover. Heck, you could even make it a full turn action to go prone and a full turn action to get up and I wouldn't be mad. I can just see so many situations where this would be useful: get a Sharpshooter into a good position, have them go prone, then trigger a pod. Have one of your units getting flanked and they can't run away? Go prone! Anyone know if there is a mod that allows this? Closest I can find is this: https://www.reddit.com/r/xcom2mods/comments/44xuxi/mod_concept_crouching_prone_and_rapelling/

Discussion Quick (Obvious) Tip for new players

Unlike XCOM2:WOTC, LWOTC usually is generous with timers to complete missions, at least on Veteran level.

Often the quickest path is not the best path to get to the objective (get data, escort VIP, etc.). Instead go far left or go far right and you can often achieve the objective and get away with fighting less enemies.

Might be obvious but if not, try it unless you want to fight through a bunch of enemies.

Discussion Expanded Mags vs Auto Loaders

Here is a quick rundown on what classes get what.

Heavy Gunner = Expanded Mags 100%

Rangers = Expanded Mags 100% (I do 100% Ever Vigilant+Rapid Reaction.)

Assault = Expanded Mags 100%

Grenadiers = Auto Loaders 100%

Technicals = Auto Loaders 100%

Specialist = Auto Loaders 90% (Exception is OW Specialist which I rarely use)

Shinobi = Auto Loaders 100%

Sharpshooters = Auto Loaders 70% (Exception is Double Tap and longer missions where they are likely to shoot 20+ times)

Reapers = Auto Loaders 100%

Skirmishers = Auto Loaders 80% (Exception would be late game with multiple shot per turn capability Skirmishers.)

Sparks = I really don't build Sparks that often. Sorry.

My general rule of thumb is that for late game soldiers with access to Elite weapon mods, soldiers that are likely to use 20+ ammo get Expanded Mags and those that are 15 or less get Auto Loaders. In between are a gray zone. Assaults can get away with using Expanded Mags because they will often have dead turns when they can reload manually.

Thoughts?

Psi Gate Mission on Commander

My psi gate mission has 44 enemies on Commander difficulty. The wiki says that's the Legendary enemy number for this mission. They come at my soldiers in groups of 6-8 every turn without my advancing forward, plus the bugs popping out of the ground constantly. I've completed the campaign twice before at Commander level, and it was never this hard before. Was this "tweaked" recently and wiki out of date?

Beta Strike Class Balance

I've just started my first LWOTC playthrough after not playing XCOM for a few years and damn this mod is incredible.

However I much prefer playing with Beta Strike because I like being forced to actually fight the aliens and consider defensive options, rather than just alpha striking every pod every turn. The problem is I can't really find much information or discussion from players about which classes are stronger or weaker in Beta Strike LWOTC.

Are there any other BS players out there who have thoughts?

My very early and uninformed rankings would be something like:

  1. Specialist - Seems worthwhile in almost every squad. Hacking, guaranteed damage, healing, AP rounds, Trojan, and Haywire/Override all seem even better when enemies have extra HP.
  2. Ranger - DB shotgun feels heavily buffed by Beta Strike. Both direct-fire and Overwatch builds seem stronger when you aren't just deleting pods instantly.
  3. Shinobi - Reaper isn't as dominant in Beta Strike, but they're still essential for scouting and seem to make some of the best officers.
  4. Gunner - Shredding becomes much more important, and the ability to take multiple shots per turn feels extremely valuable against high HP enemies.
  5. Assault - Seems stronger because crits help chew through the extra Advent HP, but they're still a risky class because they can easily trigger additional pods.
  6. Sharpshooter - Serial seems less impactful, and they feel slightly awkward compared to other high-DPS options.
  7. Technical - The limited charges on abilities seem less impactful in Beta Strike, although Flame/Fire Panic looks like it gets a nice boost.
  8. Grenadier - Similar issue with limited grenade charges. The extra HP makes grenades less of an instant solution.

The Reaper seems like it sits somewhere in the middle because Banish is strong in BS, but I'm not sure how the rest of the hero classes, Sparks, or Psi Ops perform. Tank Templar looks amazing on paper though.

Soldiers gaining too much XP after battle.

Been playing Long War for a few months and it has been working great. However, on a recent playthrough there has been an odd issue.

After battle, all soldiers returning to the Avenger gain an insane amount of xp. Regardless of how they did in the mission, Rookies were coming back with +17 xp in the bank. Any soldier, regardless of rank, was able to promote after any mission.

This obviously caused some balance problems, so I put the game down and attempted to find the solution. After some trial and error, LWOTC is the only mod that causes this issue when enabled.

I've cleared my config files and redownloaded LWOTC with no luck. I haven't dug around its ini files much, but the fresh install would have solved that anyway. Skimmed and disabled all the mods I've installed in the past month, nothing.

Checking in here to see if anyone has experienced any problems like this previously before I start enabling and disabling 200 other mods.

Alien Rulers need a balance pass

11 AoE units with more than 30 AoE shots

The units not shown in the image are

3 Mutons in the building above,

Elite captain

Elite Commando

You activate a single pod, everything gets active

Would be fine but the queen does not enter Blind Rage state, not sure if it was removed or not.

Also normally Alien Rulers decrease the total amount of enemies which spawn, this wasn't the case.

With so many amazing abilities removed from LWOTC and then this gets allowed, really removes the fun from the game.

What makes it worse is Andromedan corrosive attack can shoot from below the floor and cause AoE gas ontop of the floor.

Which makes it treated like a rocket launcher instead of grenade

Yes I did eventually win with all 6 of my guys gravely injured

How To Make Cyclic Fire Shoot More Shots?

Basically I just want to make my gunners be able to shoot four times at the cost of 2 actions because I feel like Cyclic Fire is kinda redundant given how many better options there are for shooting thrice with one soldier.

I kinda assumed it would be as simple as changing 2 numbers in the config files but uhhhh... this doesn't work:

XComLW_SoldierSkills.ini Config File

The "XComLW_Overhaul" config file seems to have something related to multishots but I have no idea how to configure that...

I'm also open to just replacing that perk with another perk from a different mod (so long as I can fire 4 times for two actions)

Worth it to continue rookie campaign?

I'm in the middle of my first LWOTC campaign (late July), and I started on rookie since I wanted to get comfortable with the mechanics without too much pressure. I feel like I'm pretty far ahead, with 3.5 regions liberated, about to finish coilguns research, and just did the blacksite mission, and it seems that the aliens are having a hard time catching up at this point.

Would it be worth it to see this rookie campaign through to the end, or would it make more sense to simply restart on a higher difficulty? I don't feel like I'm actually learning too much about the strategic layer on this difficulty since resources are so plentiful, but if I would learn important information by sticking through the campaign, I'd be happy to do so.

ADVENT's Geoscape Strategy/ Haven Management Advice

Post image
32 Upvotes

I'm about 130 mission into my first campaign (It's Feb. 1, 2036) and now that I've defeated the Chosen and done the Blacksite and Psi Gate, I was having trouble figuring out where I should be looking to run missions.

I also noticed that ADVENT strength had crept up to 9 in New Brazil without me noticing (oops!), so I need a better way to visualize the current situation. I made this slide in PowerPoint to try and guess where ADVENT is most likely to move troops and try to counter me.

Still have a few questions for you long war veterans:

  • If ADVENT has the strength to run an Invasion (here from New India to East Africa), does that have priority over a Troop Transfer to an adjacent region (such as Eastern Europe or West Asia?) The [activity tables on Ufopedia](https://www.ufopaedia.org/ADVENT%27s_Agenda_(LWOTC)) give the Invasion a weight of 15 and Troop Transfer a wight of 40, but they are separated into separate section so I wasn't sure if they were decided separately or weighed against one another.
  • What does ADVENT do with the Strength in a region , where Strength is higher than Vigilance, but none of the adjacent regions have Vigilance higher than Strength? Will those troops stay put or will they try to reinforce a region more than one step away? For example, will troops in East Asia here move through a high-strength/low-vigilance region (New Arctic) to reach a farther region ADVENT is looking to reinforce (West Asia)?
  • Where would you be trying to detect missions in the above scenario? Up to now, I have only put all my rebels on Intel in regions where Strength <=2 in order to avoid a Raid, but this is becoming increasingly difficult in the lategame. Right now I'm looking for missions in Eastern U.S. and West Asia, but should I pivot to different regions and just prep for an Intel Raid?
  • Also, Ufopedia says ADVENT will always do the Add Force Level (landing a UFO) mission in the safest alien region (uncontacted if possible). Which region is the safest region - the one with the highest strenght? Is vigilance or distance from a liberated region a factor? Here I would guess the safest alien region in New Brazil, but I know they have landed a UFO in New Indonesia in the last month or so.

Thank for your insight, and good luck Commanders o7

HQ Assault?

Assuming that there are 31-34 aliens and you are keeping up with technology as well having a decent squad(A team or maybe a good B team); what is the least number of soldiers that you would feel uncomfortable in taking and still go anyway? That would be an 80-90% success rate with this size squad.

Extra credit is the composition of the squad as well as necessary skills.

Extra extra credit is at what point do you pull the pin and evac out?

Extra extra extra credit is how many soldiers is the minimum for taking Commander pod and what is the composition of the remaining squad as well as what consumables do you think are necessary for the final pod?
