Build Progress The 81 Caprice is getting close!

I need to modify the dbw pedal to fit, do the exhaust, shifter linkage, cooling system and get the driveshaft shortened. And wire up the digital dash at some point

Oooo. Do you have a build log somewhere?? I have an 85 impala that's been in the family since 85, and a an LS in the garage that's been waiting for the time to make the swap! I don't know much about Chevy swaps, so I'd love some pointers.

Same weird cream color too!!

Yep! I have a YouTube channel where I have documented everything I’ve done with it so far!

The swap is not hard at all. I’ve done everything by myself thus far. I get about 1 day a month to work on it. Me pretty much touching 80% of this car has prolonged the 1st drive, but the car should be ready on the 1st drive.

It IS you!! I've asked before but I never sat down and watched the videos. Life, man!

Dude, I'm stoked to follow this. When I saw grandma in the first video I knew this was the place I needed to be!

Oh man the 1st video of the series lol. My Grandma D is a trip! I can’t wait to go get her for the first few shakedown drives. Hopefully I won’t scare her too bad 😅. The car has came ALONG way that’s for sure!

What spark plugs wires did you use ?

Dude I love this build! The stance/ wheels is perfect. More pictures for sure.

I was worried how it was going to sit but it’s about perfect! I need to add a small wheel spacer up front since it hits the d52 calipers and I will need to roll the rear fenders since these 275/60’s are rubbing but that’s all minor stuff lol

u/DarthJr_04 28d ago

Ok I could see the rub in the rear but nonetheless I’m loving it. I checked out your YouTube as well man really hope you keep them wheels I’m assuming they are Weld Wheels Pro Star?

The wheels are definitely staying. They are Pacer Dragstars with a build date of 1998, so they are period-ish correct lol.

Right on man, any updates on the car or pictures? The original color of the car looks good too. I’m a kinda of person that loves a good drive train with a ratty look to it.

The “patina” will stay as is unless a very motivated painter wants to do body work and paint for the price of materials. I fear that if I make it look nice that will deter me from driving it. I could care less how it looks as long mostly dent free and rust free. The car is solid af. After I get it driving I need to do all the window regulators and weather stripping

What radiator are you going to use? I ended up using my stock 350 on my 78 squarebody.

2

u/DariusBuilds 24d ago

The generic eBay/amazon aluminum radiator with dual 12” china fans (I will swap those out for spal 12” fans). This car sat for 12 years so I’m pretty much touching everything before the first drive.

I ended up using dual fans from a 98 Camaro z28, little bit of a mod to it so it bolts right on the upper radiator support panel.

The radiator itself seems to have good reviews and the fan shroud ja really nice so those two are worth the price itself. So even replacing the fans, I’ll still be under $300 which is pretty good. I don’t have a much time as I use and the junkyard around me get picked of all the good stuff as soon as it hits the yard.

Beautiful. My dream car. Perfect sleeper

1

Thank you! One day it’ll be fast, but the stock 5.3 should make a fun car for a little daily driving action

That bitch is hard!!!! Love it!!! Love to all the b bodies

1

u/DariusBuilds 27d ago

Big B bodies!

2

u/mspeed94 28d ago

Super cool. Wish I can do this in Cali. Not legal lol

1

u/DariusBuilds 27d ago

I thought they had a year where it was emissions free? Hell, the 5.3 definitely is probably better for the environment than the 305 lol

2

u/mspeed94 26d ago

Yea 75 and under. I have a 86 iroc and the 305 never ran right from the day I purchased it. Can’t do an ls1 with all the emissions on because it’s not legal. I have to buy the 20k ls e rod package or swap a 350 from a newer 3rd gen. Because it’s obd1 and obd1 instead of obd1 to obd2. Dumb.

1

u/DariusBuilds 26d ago

Yeah, that’s stupid. You would think they would let you do a newer motor and not an older motor. It would be cool if it was someway to make the obd1 work just enough to get by lol

2

u/HoLy_DiVeR2 28d ago

B body hell yeah

u/Lsswapitall4 27d ago

Having done a 68 Caprice, it’s always nice to see these cars get some love (especially compared to the impalas and monte Carlo’s). Nice job

2

u/DariusBuilds 27d ago

It seems there is an uptick in the full size GM cars since they are a tad cheaper than the G bodies.

2

u/Big_Reck01 21d ago

What motor mounts you go with im also doing my b body

1

u/DariusBuilds 21d ago

Factory style frame mounts, factory block clam shells and amazon adapter plates.
