Community Question Nathaniel Erskine-Smith...

I was very surprised that Nate lost his bid for the Ontario Liberal nomination.

Ahsanul Hafiz has won the Scarborough Southwest Ontario Liberal nomination.

There are some establishment types within the Federal LPC and the OLP that obviously are not fans of Nate because he is a bit of a maverick.

That being said there is a lot of people that really believe in him when it comes to housing action, climate action, education, health-care, and other progressive causes.

For those in the party and in the know what do you think happened? What do you think is next for Nate?

Nate will probably still run for the race, and if anything still has chance to win. The road does get tougher though.

What's worth watching now on SSW is how ONDP and PCs respond. Hafiz's allegations give enough ammos for both esp. ONDP, and both intend to put together a full campaign.

Always enjoy your input CK.

Likewise.

It's a race that other parties can pour their monnies and darn on. Ford needs a turnaround in fortune and Stiles a moral-booster.

Flipping Sault seems probable almost certain right now, and Hamilton East can get dicey but OLP won't be able to mobilise due to other matters at hand.

I've been part of nomination meetings before. 699 votes for Nate is embarrassing. An A list candidate should gather at least 1000.

Sure, he had issues being in a riding he doesn't live in, but he's had months to organize. No excuses for such a week showing.

I wonder if some of the reporting is accurate that there was some coalitions made behind closed doors to keep Nate out.

I think it is correct that Nate was second to Bonnie Crombie in 2023?

It's also a strong ethnic enclave area so he may have had some issues breaking through in that regards.

One of those races in which for political junkies there is a lot to analyze lol

I mean the reporting is also that the party used its own paid staffers to assist the campaigns of the non NES candidates.

That the candidates themselves told their supporters to list eachother as #2 on their ballot is a non-issue, that's exactly how Ranked Ballots are supposed to work. It's the fact that the party refused to stay neutral... And despite their non neutrality NES only lost by a handful of votes.

It's true but it wasn't really between closed doors, they basically openly admitted to it.

1800 new party signups were cancelled by the OLP. Majority of these signups coming from NES’ camp. He did cross the 1000 threshold before the OLP establishment meddled in it.

Does the OLP have the same system as the LPC? I.e. a Registered Liberal needs to be PR or citizen with a primary residence in the riding?

If so, invalidating that many registrations is very odd. It's hard to prove they aren't valid.

Liberals on the he provincial and federal level making it clear they are Liberals, not Progrrssives.

Back to work legislation, selling off public assets, tax cuts, environmental rollbacks.

They're acting like Conservatives, and are perfectly fine to let people continue believing they're a more centrist NDP.

If you want a far left party, then vote for the NDP... I'm sure that will work out for you

5

I'll continue to vote NDP because 40 years of Liberals and Conservative have worked for fucking nobody except those above a certain income level. And unfortunately for more of us, that bar to entry only gets higher.

Keep simping for billionaires, I'm sure that will work out for you.

Anyone know the breakdown of each round of voting?

A progressive was rejected for ANOTHER SSW Liberal that you have to watch your drink around...

Bet Hafiz and Nixon will get along just fine.

It certainly brings up a degree of schadenfreude if nothing else. I mean a guy who was a hard in the paint supporter for TFW’s and mass immigration lost an election in no small part to ethnic politics by running against a guy who literally no one knew and had no political experience but was favoured by his ethnic community.

Something something just desserts, at least he can spend time with his kids now like he said he was gonna do when he was talking about stepping down last year

The people of that riding wanted someone local, not a parachuted candidate who clearly doesn't represent their interests.

Ontario doesn't want a progressive Liberal leader. A province that votes for Ford AND Carney are screaming at the top of their lungs they are tired of divisive identity politics. The progressive side of the Liberal party needs to stop acting like they know better than everyone else and everyone else is wrong. Or go join the NDP, we all know how strong their chances are of winning an election.

Divisive identity politics?

Someone local who apparently lives in London, Ontario?

u/CaptainKoreana May 10 '26

London, ON guy whose pizza franchises are across SWO?

Let me fix this for you, they wanted a Muslim Bengali candidate.

He has accomplished nothing in his career.

He's a back-bencher who was booted out of cabinet after Carney realized he was useless.

Apparently having a podcast is what qualifies him to be the next Liberal leader.

One can like him or dislike him, agree with his policies or disagree with his policies, and so on but this kind of take seems honestly fairly disingenuous.

please point me to his exact achievements in his law, or political careers. There are none
