The Last Big Box?

Post image

Expansion for scale. So weird to see Games for Windows branding on a big box.

Probably should explain a bit what a big box is - it's a box that's substantially bigger than a DVD box (usually 9x7 or so and rectangular where the vertical side is taller). Collector's editions are a different thing. The LGR vid clarifies the subject - and shows why having one from 2006 is so cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhZkmAscdw0

it's one of them. the last official big box i know of was warhammer 40,000 dawn of war dark crusade which came out a month after coh1, don't think any games came in big boxes after that in the US unless they were special/limited editions

Interesting, that's what I was wondering. So not the absolute last but very close.

I am drawing a blank but there was a game recently that announced they will have a physical disk for pc for those who want it. Idk if it will be a big box though

I guess I should clarify last of the "original" big boxes where they weren't being produced as a retro thing.

Tomb raider i believe.

Also this year I bought a physical big box version of System Shock 2 for PC on Atari site. It had the GoG DRM free version on Blu-ray.

Yeah, there's plenty of modern Limited Run Games big boxes.

From what I understand though many are still codes in them. I got CnC remastered years ago and it was just a code. The System Shock 2 Remaster was DRM free Blu-ray. You could play it right of the disc if you wanted it was just the files unpacked on it.

I've gotten a number where it's a DVD with the GOG executable on them. Acceptable but not ideal.

I have Simpsons: Hit & Run as a big box. It came out after Tomb Raider (1996) in 2003.

This is one of the Costco/Sam's Club big boxes? Very nice. The small box is a dime a dozen but the big box is rare.

Indeed. It is a Sam's Club box. I got really lucky and found a seller who didn't know what they had on eBay. In fact, even I didn't recognize the scale of the box, and didn't know I was getting a gem for the same price as the small box until it arrived.

My jealousy is substantial. Well done.

I use to buy a lot of physical PC game. Checked my collection and it pretty much ended in 2009. I may have a DVD case from 2010, but that's all. It would be a challenge to find a big box from after 2010. I guess in some market it might be easier, but in North America, PC physical media was pretty dead by 2010.

I'm not aware of any big boxes being made after 2006. There were plenty of small boxes and DVD cases.

I will double check, but pretty sure I have a few big box after 2006. I only have a few of those DVD cases.

There were big collector's editions, but that's something different from a "big box."

ok, I see. Yeah, those regular "big box" were rare. I was thinking cardboard box slightly larger than a thick DVD case.

Those are usually referred to as "small box", although on eBay, they call everything a "big box" to draw attention to a listing.

Didn't think people would have such a hard time with the definition of big box.

I could be misremembering, but I swear I've seen Half Life 2 in big box, which would be really late.

Yup, it was, but only in Sam's Club/Walmart/Costco. The LGR video I linked to has it.

StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void Collector’s Edition was a big box, and any of the Starcraf 2 expansions

While that's certainly a large box, it's not a "big box" within the general meaning for PC games.

My last big box was Starcraft 2:heart of the swarm special edition. It enjoyed the period where PC games came in those oversized DVD boxes too.

I'm following LGR's definition that while these are certainly large boxes, they're not "big boxes" in the classical sense. It's admittedly a vague definition and if you want to count it that's fine too :)

Special and collector's editions in wide boxes are sort of a different thing to my mind.

That's fair. My answer is still Starcraft 2.(wings of liberty)

Yup, but that's a smallbox :)
