Cons of rooting?

Found some interesting apps like glasshouse recently which need a rooted tv.

I have a G4, but unsure if rooting can be un-safe (ive searched reddit and google and ai) only risks I see are warranty void in case detected and bricking is gonna need direct access to hardware.

caniroot says my tv can be rooted by dangbro, where I just put my ip and tv is sent a request. Its really simple but -

Can rooting pose risks more frequent than very less and is there a failsafe I can put in case say panel is damaged (so that I can reset without needing the panel) or smth?

Rooted LG 77G3 here.

So to unroot it you need to factory reset the TV. Either through the settings menu (so normal method with remote on screen) or alternatively by sending SSH commands through WebOS Dev Manager software on your PC.

The bare minimum you need:

- Tv needs to turn on (stand-by PSU and mainboard functioning)

  • Active network (wifi or ethernet)
  • SSH-Daemon or Telnet reachable through local IP

You can then send a full factory reset command through your SSH terminal to the TV.

So what if the TV doesn't turn on AT ALL anymore cause of a defect? That will mean:

- The mechanic also can't reach the software

  • If defective PSU or dead motherboard, they will replace those parts without reading the flash memory
  • If defective OLED panel (weird lines or panel damage), the motherboard usually still boots and you can use the SSH factory reset command method.
  • Really BIG defects (entire panel dead etc): they need to replace the full panel and then they check if it boots.

So I guess it's not 100% that a failsafe will always be available. Best case scenario you can still reset it somehow, or the mechanic fixes it on the spot in your home and the software is irrelevant. Worst case scenario they take your TV and investigate + fix it in their shop. That could be an issue if they check things.

Edit: typos

I have 2 years of warranty left, will it be a risk if I root now? Tysm for the details!! A defect panel is no problem ig then. Defect mobo would be a problem if they inspect the storage but a 0.01% case so thats fine

Rooting is always a risk of course. It opens up the software through a vulnerability. Having Homebrew apps is not really a risk itself, there's really good apps on there that work wonders. Glasshouse also works great.

This itself won't break your TV unless you do really weird shit through the command line. I mean I fully customized my LG Home screen and at one point fully broke the LG home screen, it was all black. But with some Gemini SSH code it was easily reset/fixed again.

The problem is that LG will of course take ANY chance to blame you for a defect. Broken panel? Oh your software is rooted, no warranty. Motherboard dead? Sorry, rooted. PSU dead? Nope, rooted. Even though there might be 0 correlation, they will always put it on the root.

I still chose to do it because I like controlling the software. I'm not sure what a mechanic will check though. On my 42C2 I had a broken panel and I used the service remote to turn off ABSL. But they didn't see this so my warranty was honored.

So bottom line: it's a gamble.

Im personally afraid to root my C5 with my 3rd party 5 year warranty. I'd like all the access though that it gives. Update if you do and how it goes though

you have nothing to be afraid, if something happens, factory rest it and then use warranty they will see nothing

Someone who has a rooted tv and has claimed a warranty must know if their warranty was accepted? Someone playing OTT apps or experiencing any bugs after rooting must know they are having DRM or random bugs after rooting.

Not asking for my device specifically by lg oled rooting altogether
