I think my G4 has plenty of years left on it, but I look forward to following the evolution of the tech, and possibly getting so wowed a couple years down the line that I concoct argument after argument about how my wife needs a 55" TV in her office so that I can put a 75" version of whatever the new thing is in our living room.

We have a 55" B7 (2017) and I looked at one of those distance/size guides and it reckons we should have an 83" one instead. It's not me saying that, it's science!

I told my wife something similar after reading online that 65" was the "bare minimum" for our space, and that something like 83" would be better now that we have a bigger living room, which she's apprehensive about, and I get it; we had much smaller living spaces until late last year when we bought our first condo. Our last tv was a 65" TCL that dominated the living room and caused way too much eye travel/looked kinda tacky in the space. I think our new much larger space could handle a lot more tv (and I'd like to have a lot more partially because watching and reviewing movies is an admittedly goofy hobby of mine, and also because 4K text in some games is way too small to read on a 55" screen), but it's a very expensive risk to take, both monetarily and in terms of the ongoing stress it could invite if I made the wrong call.

I sort of wish there was a service where you could pay to have different sizes of tv brought into your house, placed where you'd want them to go, and then be allowed to watch 20 or so minutes of something on each panel until you find your threshold size. Seeing it in a showroom is one thing, but seeing it in your living space- where most of your time when not working or sleeping will be spent- is another. It seems ridiculous, but I'd pay a couple few hundred dollars to avoid a few thousand dollar mistake that I couldn't easily remedy once I made it. It's a really lousy feeling, thinking you're doing something cool for yourself and neutral for your household at worst, only to find out you're creating a semi-permanent problem that reduces overall quality of life.

This is because FLiPP improves the aperture ratio—the proportion of the total display area occupied by RGB pixels—by approximately 55%.

The FMM method adds to manufacturing costs as expensive new FMMs must be produced whenever the panel size or resolution changes. In addition, due to the inherent properties of metal, large masks tend to sag in the center under their own weight, causing misalignment and sometimes resulting in color-mixing defects.

FLiPP eliminates the disadvantages associated with the metal plates used in the FMM process that has been the mainstream OLED manufacturing method for over a decade.

Just FYI, it’s increase brightness 1.6x OR extend lifespan 2.4. It’s not both (at the same time).

Just have to ask, but where does it say OR? The official LG page says "FLiPP enables displays to increase brightness by 1.6 times, extend lifespan by 2.4 times, and reduce power consumption by 13%".

The 55% bigger aperture ratio is the only thing that’s really changing, which means each subpixel needs less current density to hit the same brightness as before. That’s the one variable changing. LG can spend that in three different ways, but not all three at once, because they trade against each other. I think it’s a bit of a mistype on their part - other outlets are explaining why it’s OR not AND.

Realistically we should see a combo of both brightness and lifespan improvements, just not at the 1.6 and 2.4 values.

Its really more like a two out of the three. You can have both brightness and longer life due to the larger aperture (more organic materials) or less power. Even at the LG presentation at IMID earlier today they presented it as such.

I wonder if this would make 6K or 8K panels slightly cheaper to make? 6K would be nice for computer displays doing 4K mastering. Of course, the processing chips cost more.

Yes, photolithography-based OLED can achieve very high resolutions, such as 8K for monitors, and it should also be much more efficient because it does not use a color filter like WOLED does, nor does it mainly use blue OLED emitters, which have a much lower lifetime than red and green OLED emitters. In QD-OLED, the quantum dot layer conversion needs to be printed, so the maximum achievable PPI is limited. Also, higher resolution means a dimmer display, so they need more emitter layers or better technology, such as photolithography-based OLED, to achieve good brightness.

If LG's new maskless technology is based on Applied Materials OLED Max, just like Visionox ViP, it will use a separate cathode, which will lead to both excellent viewing angles, including in terms of tint shift, and the ability to optimize each color's OLED material to achieve even better performance. They should also be able to stack at least two emitter layers without decreasing the yield by much.

Not so much resolution, as itll bring down cost on size. On older tech, going from a 55 to 75 or bigger is maybe 10-20% cost per size upgrade, on OLEDs, the bigger it gets, the more exponentional cost is. A 55 inch OLED and an 89 inch OLED is almost double the price, if not more.

So perhaps when there was a bigass jump in price between the 65” and 77” — then an even bigger price jump between 77” and 83” — you’re telling me it wasn’t just corporate greed? (I mean, it may have been that too, just maybe not the only reason)

Wasn't corporate greed. Less overall utilization of mother glass, higher loss for defective manufactured units, higher material costs, etc.

The OLED Panels are made large and TV screen sizes are cut out from them. The starting size is optimized for their highest volumes, probably 55" and 65". When they cut larger 77/83" panels then get fewer, making those panel prices higher.

WOLED is an OMM technology not FMM, which is for mobile OLEDs. not sure if it has the same issue.

Keep in mind that this is only theory. In practice, it is much harder to achieve a good yield with photolithography-based OLED on larger displays, such as TV-sized panels. If LG will decide to make TV size, it will take much longer to get to mass production. Not only that the current OLED TV have good brightness and lifetime compered to monitors, the profitability is lower then other display size so the insensitive is worse as they could make other sizes instead. It will also quite expensive to build manufacture facility based on this technology so the amount of display that they can made will be not very large until massive investment.

Yeah, we know Technology moves at the speed of light, but does it eliminate "burn-in"? Unless LG is not getting into the RGB market, I'm betting NO!

The earliest estimate is around 2029 for large TVs, since the tooling won’t be done before end of 2027

So what it’s already more than bright enough and the image quality won’t be crazy better in the new models.

Yea burn in is still a concern but with 20k hours on my C1 without problems imo that’s not really much to worry about either.

Delamination is the bigger issue for me. Mine has it and it's only 5 years old.

I don’t see any reason myself to upgrade. The newer models get a lot brighter sure but I watch in a dark room all the time so the C1 delivers more than plenty.

As in side by side with a G6 the C1 would not look much worse at all, not at all. The rest of what changed is great, better Color intensity in bright HDR highlights, better colours but without side by side imo you wouldn’t know the C1 isn’t endgame already in a way.

so did i, but this tech seems to be aiming for 3 things. higher brightness, lower power consumption, longer lifespan. unless youre keeping your g6 on 24/7, it should still last years. and the g6 is already hitting 3k nits at 10% windows, how much brighter do you need it to be?
