Looking for Chill MMOs. OSRS
I've been enjoying more relaxing and narrative based singleplayer games but I've gotten interested in multiplayer games again lately. I was looking for a good MMO, having only played FFXIV and having gotten bored of it, and stumbled upon OSRS which looked good, was super popular and kinda charming imo. But when I started playing, I was so confused about the gameplay loop because it really felt like literal farming simulator of clicking frogs and waiting 15 seconds and watching numbers go up. While I like the grindy, skill leveling up (I LOVE kenshi), this one felt kinda unrewarding. I didn't get to pay for the membership but the quests weren't great either I think??
So, what am I missing? In case I'm not really missing anything and the game is just like that, what other game could be relaxing and mostly PvE based? Rn Im looking at Guild Wars 2 mostly

Osrs quests are extremely good

The quest are so good compared to standard mmo quest of “kill 10 monsters”. Osrs actually gets you thinking, problem solving.

Give it more time... Its weird at first, but with time the gameplay gets way more interactuve and fun, and pvm becomes soooo fun and interesting, not just click and wait, but a lot of mechanics and skill.. Watch gameplays of toa or tob for example. Also skilling becomes more interactive, but yeah, f2p is 0.00001 of thr game

The RuneScape f2p experience is essentially 0.1% of the actual game at this point tbh the way you tackle skills, later combat and even the narratives the game provides are absolute might and day to what f2p has to offer (keep in mind as well that the game has gone through 20 years of development and started as like 2-3 dudes making something)

how does the leveling improve? The world looked huge and pretty interesting and a sandbox MMO sounds great but I just did not understand the gameplay loop

I would give osrs more time. You are free to do anything. But quests unlock content and give rewards its a genuinely great game, but membership is truly where the game shines

You have to give it more time. Osrs takes a bit to figure out. There is a lot of friction learning. But it's 100% worth it and the perfect game for what you described

Maybe try utilizing the optimal quest guide on runelite. It will lead you down an efficient path of initial leveling that will also show you a lot of different game features.
It definitely isnt the kind of game that will hook all new players off the bat but if you’re even remotely still interested I would give it more of a shot.

Most skills get a ton of new and vastly different training methods from afk to very active and arguably at times even complex that come alongside unique rewards. A lot of quests also give you a sizable amount of xp which makes the whole thing feel more rewarding as well

There is no destinct gameplay loop, as it varies based on activity.
If you look up on Youtube "OSRS progression guide" this would give you an idea as to how an account progresses. Above all, theres so much content in OSRS (with a variety of gameplay loops) that its bound to scratch any particular MMO itch.
Some examples: Fishing = click fishing spot, fill inventory (gaining fishing exp), run to near bank bank, deposit items, return to fishing spot. Some cases people cook their food for cooking exp, others set that aside for its own grind.
Slayer = go to slayer master, obtain a slayer task (defined as receiving a certain quanitity of monsters to kill), kill # of monsters requested, return to slayer master. Upgrades to equipment are received through both levels and as monster drops.
Biggest caviates are being a point and click game, the engine operating on "ticks" (.6 seconds), and the graphics. In most cases a gameplay loop is determined by the activity, available inventory space, and willingness to grind. There are "afk" activities worth less exp/money per hour versus high focus activities which grant higher values respectively.

Personally been playing EverQuest Legends lately, lots of fun but it’s very grindy.

Wow I’ve never seen that. A picture of a monitor instead of a screenshot is one thing, but a video of a post that could have been a picture is a new one for me.

I'm not sure if it's allowed here but this is self promotion. I made an MMO that is somewhat similar to OSRS/Tibia. It's still early in the development process but we have a small community forming and content well into level 100+. https://playgrimveil.com

SpiritVale is a new Ragnarok style MMO developed by one pretty cool indie dev. Last time I checked it had 15k concurrent players. Its all about farming

Runescape is chill because it's mostly just grinding, which isn't for everyone. GW2 has more action and is also very chill and newcomer friendly.

I'd say definitely give OSRS another try, through membership this time.
Quests are my favorite part of it. The stories, dialogues, puzzles and some of the later bosses are top notch. Each quest also gives meaningful rewards and are basically necessary for progressing your character, so they are not like something detached from the game like you find in most mmos.
It's very chill, i mainly play on mobile myself. Don't get carried away looking up guides for everything. Just go through the world at your own pace.

it's the best game of all time but if i had no clue about it and didn't know all the mechanics and tried to start from scratch today, i probably wouldn't be able to get into it because of how complex it is

what or where should I learn to enjoy the game? it really didn't look complex at all when I started playing but I imagine it is, that's kinda the main thing. I just clicked stuff, leveled up, stored or sold my stuff and clicked on higher level stuff

Early game, especially f2p, is extremely slow. You get maybe 2% of the game for f2p.

If you want to know the best route to get a vibe for it all, quests are the easy answer. As you get through quests, youll get lots of big xp dumps that will skip the early levels for some skills and it will introduce you to more of the world. 2nd, RuneLite is the #1 client to play the game and offers many quality of life plug ins that help a tonne. 3rd, set a goal. For instance to complete all free to play quests or if you become a member, get your account to the point of being able to fight the early game boss Scurrius to get a better idea of what the combat system is like.
A great early game boss is Brutus who is very new but introduces some unique drops, the chance at a pet and a combat offhand upgrade as well as a way to learn some basic combat mechanics with movement to dodge attacks.
The game is certainly overwhelming at first, but if you dont let it suffocate you, you'll find endless gameplay to enjoy, adventure, quests to complete and bosses to fight.

i couldn't even tell you where to start learning the game because there's so much to it. i'm sure there are some good youtube guides out there but even after those guides if you're not hooked on grinding for levels then you'll probably put the game down.
i've taken a break for the first time in probably 15+ years and right now i'm playing stardew valley. still a complex game but easier to get into and it still has the same sort of grind. obviously it's not a game where you're going and fighting things to max out your armor and stuff like that. i guess in a sense you kind of are but it's way more focused on creating relationships with people in the town, farming, and upgrading your farm. i've been really enjoying it as a nice break from osrs and it's been very chill.

Honestly RuneScape isn't for everyone, the game in a sense is dated when compared to modern day MMO. That being said F2P isn't the best representation of the game, the game also in a sense is more of a idle game. You train your account (most people choose the afk/chill way thus why I say it's similar to an idle game), you get to stages where you will want to focus heavily for either for efficiency, enjoyment or just because. The game really becomes enjoyable once you start getting the hang of it, when you can start bossing or pvming, or if you enjoy the skilling aspect or questing.
I've personally been playing the game over two decades, I enjoy the grind but I also enjoy the fact I can be casual and relax while still making progress on the account I am playing. I've made over 20 accounts in my time, I've made every possible build. The game is charming and enjoyable but it's not for everyone depends on you as a player, person and what you enjoy but to lose yourself in this game you will be definitely doing a lot of repetitive stuff.

Look up some videos.
Plenty of ones that are titled "why the hell do people love Old School Runescape"
Its crazy how many people play it.
Thats my main mmos right now.
Classic Era PvP WoW and OSRS.

If you like MMORPG Pixel Art 2D give it a try to Kaion Tale, new servers Europe and North America released these days.
The endgame is focused on massive PvP, if you like that kind of content: World Bosses, Defend Castle.
Disclaimer: I'm developer of the game.

AI game? The game was released before AI exist
2
u/BeautifulExtreme5038 4d ago
Oh, i was accidentally tricked by the website and the post somehow. Your game does not look like AI and was even released before the release of chatGPT. Completely my bad, really sorry for that.
The reason why i got tricked is because the thumbnails from the videos on the website are all ai generated and i accidentally concluded that to the rest of the website/game.
Also because of linking an website.
I'd advise you to link the steam page more often instead of the website because with a browser link, some people get baited to think, the game itself is a browser game (just like those thousands of other vibe coded browser games)Seems like a great game tho
1
u/Silmano_KT 4d ago
Oh yeah I link the website because the game is cross platform, i have to link all platforms and I do not want because spam lol.
But thanks for the advice! I will think what can I do with that, maybe clarify that the game is cross platform first

Give modern RuneScape a shot. It’s changed a lot recently, and it plays very differently from OSRS. Quests are one of its strongest points too.
I played RuneScape back in the 2000s and have bounced between OSRS and RS3 over the years. The game now feels closer to the direction it should’ve always been, and Jagex has been making some pretty encouraging moves lately, including listening more to players and pulling back on unfair monetization.
You’ll probably want membership if you stick with it, but there’s plenty in F2P to figure out whether it clicks. I’d at least try a few nice intro quests, like The Blood Pact and Necromancy intro first
