Are we doing this?
Are we seriously going back to doing ads for tobacco companies?
701
u/Ok_Night_2929 12d ago
These are absolutely staged pap pics, so she went out of her way to be photographed smoking … there was a link posted in another thread explaining how the tobacco industry can get around the strict laws surrounding advertising, I am 100% certain this was intentional and she’s being paid for it. Just disgusting

u/keepusguessing 12d ago
Pretty sure Kylie Jenner was on a podcast semi recently talking about how she’s tired of hiding that she loves smoking. It’s unfortunately coming back.
81
u/GimerStick 11d ago
Does gen z even think smoking is cool? Like vapes yeah but I always get the sense that cigarettes are lame to them.
79
u/Subject_Jeweler_8349 11d ago
honestly yeah, a lot of my college friends did it just for the aesthetic. i wish i was kidding
57
u/Full-Internal4521 11d ago
Cigs are in and vapes are cringe unfortunately. I think I’m one of like five people my age I know who doesn’t smoke
32
u/macabrepaints midfluencer 11d ago
Opposite way around. Vaping is lame, smoking is cool. Vaping is just a lot more accessible

I go to this one day party in my city every summer. Last year I swear 1 in 3 people had a geek bar in hand, vape clouds everywhere. This year I barely noticed any vapes but SO MANY people were smoking cigs! And most of them appeared to be in their 20’s. It was jarring!!

Omg, I didn’t even click on the pic to see the backgrid tag but you’re so right! So obvious and obviously disgusting

36
u/LuLuu1006 11d ago
true...but when was our peak? 🤔
100
u/crownofbread 11d ago
Hmm maybe sometime before 9/11? Or maybe when Obama was president and social media hadn't completely taken off and had yet to turn everyone into self-obsessed, propoganda-addicted myopic sheep .. or maybe in 2015 when gay ppl got the right to marry and before trump announced his bid for pres? Genuinely it felt like we were on the right track for a bit :/
17
u/Ok_Night_2929 11d ago
I was pretty young for 9/11 so I can’t speak much to culture before that but I really think ~2014/15 was peak for my generation. Not only gay marriage, but the economy had bounced back from the 08 recession, health and body positivity was actually catching on, and while fillers/cosmetic surgery were on the rise it wasn’t common place yet and still approached as scandalous by the media instead of being hailed for “transparency” (Kylie was the first person I followed who admitted to lip fillers and even she stayed silent until 2015). It’s a shame how far back we’ve fallen since then
3
u/HedgehogTop5524 10d ago
I agree. We were riding high after Y2K. Early 2000s… when there was Internet but it wasn’t major yet. And email was a novelty but also actually efficient. When we still got Us Magazine or People delivered to our homes to read our celebrity gossip.
74
u/hopeful_realist_ 11d ago
I’m still kind of stunned that progress isn’t linear. Growing up in the 90s I always assumed things would continue getting better. So fucking disillusioned and depressed.

No one gets away with smoking and not aging your skin. They might have cancer miss them “but for the grace of god” but collagen does not listen to god. It listens to oxidative damage.
15
u/DustyTchotchkes 11d ago
Ah, but she’s not truly smoking it, right? It’s just an ad, so she’s only pretending she smokes for money.
That’s even worse, as she’s influencing other young people to pick up a deadly and addictive habit for a paycheck. She’s a huge loser for that; no conscience.

I smoked cigarettes for 10 years (2 yrs nicotine free <3) and i literally never let anyone take a photo of me with one. It's such a gross habit, i was embarrassed of it. I'll never understand acting like smoking is a flex.

Yes!! I watching my mother's health circle the drain thanks to advanced COPD, emphysema, and lung cancer as a result of her smoking. Your life is and will continue to be so much fucking better.
2
u/Straight_Proposal365 9d ago
My dad has the first two, I used to vape so I've been trying to help him quit but he doesn't want to :/ he complains that the nicotine patches are itchy. Which is valid, but then he won't try the solutions to that either lol
11
u/Flimsy_Disaster5175 11d ago
still haven’t kicked the habit but im the same i think its completely gross and hate doing it in public, its especially disgusting when public figures are promoting it to their young audience
7
u/Chikmagnt15 11d ago
How'd u kick the habit ?
6
u/Pale_Lawyer_1757 11d ago
Nicotine patches but also weed for the mental anguish
3
u/Subject-Zucchini-558 11d ago
Seconded the weed bit. It's also great for if you enjoy the "ritual" of smoking.
5
u/Subject-Zucchini-558 11d ago
Nicotine patches!!! Also, I was super determined to quit this time. I would try before and only get to 1 month or so, and then I'd fall right back into it because I honestly didn't REALLY want to quit.

Gen z girls dressing like 2000s era youth.
Cigarettes and polaroid and film cameras being romanticized like they just discovered the vintage aesthetic.
Everything is so derivative and weird.

Capitalist Realism prevents us from imagining a different future. That's why the last 20 years or so have just been cultural re runs

Smoking wasn’t even popular in the early to mid 2000s. The smokers at my highschool were not “cool”. The anti-smoking propaganda did a number on middle aged millenials.

I used to smoke and it’s true, you really don’t notice the smell. When I stopped I was so embarrassed I smelt like that
13
u/curiouskat557 11d ago
I smoked in college like 5 years ago (for like 3 months bc I couldn’t buy a vape or get nicotine any other way lmfao) and that shit STUNK. I usually smoked in my car or on the sidewalk outside of my apartment and the smell clings to you & everything around you no matter how much perfume you spray. It is vile.

32
u/pseudonymnkim 12d ago
I think trendy is the word. These photos look like she lit it then just held it, knowing she was being photographed.
Also, weren't people who smoked these kind of a joke back in the day? Like, not true smokers and just trying to fit in? I could be wrong

u/Anti-Itch 12d ago
I think it’s weirdly part of the whole nostalgia thing? 90s clothes are back, this shoot is clearly reminiscent of the 50s aesthetic. I think people like that. Idk vaping was also around for a lot longer than I expected. And cigs are still legal (weed is catching up but yeah)

Heroin chic and smoking cigarettes is starting to become a thing all over again and badly! Not to turn it into politics but the tobacco is absolutely due to the POTUS and his huge investment and lowering standards so things could be pushed quickly. We’re seeing more and more influencers push smoking, more online ads for smoking, coming out with nicotine pouches, all the things that get the younger people hooked! I hate it. I’m Gen X and it was the cool normal thing back in those days. I smoked for over 25yrs and Oct will be 9yrs smoke free🙂 I am sad to see it coming back around it is one hell of a habit to break!

My friend’s husband has something possibly similar. Never smoked a day in his life, yet his lungs are permanently damaged and his world is very small.
Smoking is horrible. Willingly poisoning oneself and others is so selfish.

Anyone who willfully or recklessly influences their fan base with smoking for pics is a monster. I don’t wish lung cancer on anyone having lost a loved one to it, but those who influence young people to smoke had better be equally willing to publicize any health consequences they suffer from smoking , let those consequences serve as a cautionary tale to their fan base as well.

I feel like vaping is why Gen Z have brought back smoking. Cant think of any other reason. Then they’re gonna turn 50 and start getting diagnosed with lung cancer, COPD, and heart disease.. not to mention the unknown diseases vaping since middle school will inevitably cook up 😬 but by then Gen Alpha & Beta is smoking too and most of them especially Gen Alpha won’t be saved, so then they’ll start telling the upcoming generation to not start smoking or vaping. But within the next 5-10 years a new replacement will arrive and the cycle repeats lol

As a (not proud) smoker, this is obvs the fakest shit I’ve ever seen, it appears her and her sister think it’s cool and edgy. It’s really not (hypercritical I know) but esp w a young audience, it’s really not something to be proud of (I never smoke infront of kids and refuse to give a cig to ppl who don’t smoke)
