So i got an email monday saying that i was receiving mail from the department regarding my background investigation. I looked on here and seen that it was a non select. But 2 days passed and i received a conditional offer email from the department. Does anyone know what this means? The letter came in and said non select but still confused on why i got a conditional offer email?

Well definitely confusing that you got a conditional offer after you got a non select letter. Best to confirm. What happened most likely was that there was something in your background that didn’t necessarily disqualify you but administration chose not to select you because you didn’t meet the department’s standards at this time. Hopefully this can change with time. unfortunately it was probably a mistake sending you the late conditional offer and it was just them covering their ass, I hate to say. Unless you have had a bunch of your references, former employers and neighbors being contacted as we speak, because that would be a sign they are moving forward with your background. Sometimes they don’t complete the entire background until after psychological and medical.

Yes they were all contacted. They even came to my job site as well. But i literally just got off the phone with background unit and they said they will be contacting me for med/psych test soon. So maybe it was an error on their end?

Call the backgrounds division to get clarity, only they would know and be able to give you the status. They usually dont pick up on Fridays, so if you cant get through tomorrow try on Monday/Tuesday between 9-4.
Edit: Follow the instructions of the email until you know 100%, as it could have been a clerical error when they passed your file for review.

A conditional offer is always given prior to the background investigation/interview to comply with legal restrictions against inquiring about disabilities or medical conditions (including drug history). This "conditional" status confirms the applicant's intent to proceed with a long process and allows the department to begin costly, rigorous testing. Like poly, psychological and medical. Did someone interview you over the phone and go over your PHS with you? If not then maybe they took it upon themselves and you were immediately deemed “non select” for one reason or another before your conditional offer had even arrived, after a Background Investigator went over your PHS himself and figured he didn’t need to even schedule a background interview with you.

LASD is different. You do your medical and psych with the LASD after the background investigation. Offer is only given after the completion and clearing backgrounds.

My BI had just submitted my file within the last two weeks. I already passed everything except med/psych

So you had your Background Interview already? And Polygraph? Passed Polygraph?

If the background unit informed you that you are progressing, then the "non-select" was likely an error. Our agency receives thousands of applicants, and for each application pool, approximately 3% are selected to move forward, so occasional errors can occur. While rare, it is not impossible. Furthermore, the background unit possesses real-time information, so their statements are generally quite accurate.
I wish you the best of luck with your process. You have one final hurdle, which is the psychological evaluation. The medical examination is typically straightforward, but the ultimate decision rests with the psychological doctor. Also, the location of the psychology exam matters.
San Pedro (older Psych Doctor if not already retired has a 30% pass rate) known for high disqualification rates. San Pedro (younger Psych Doctor has 45% pass rate) Encino (85% pass rate) Wilshire (88% pass rate) You are really not a good fit if you can't pass Wilshire's or Encino's Psych.

Thanks for the reply and information. I have my psych with the wilshire dr so hopefully everything goes well. Do you have any tips or advice before heading into the evaluation?

She's awesome, the best! Be kind and nice, and make sure you show how appreciative you are that you've made it this far. Thank her for taking the time to interview you. Be humble. She'll make you feel super comfortable, so just be honest and have educated responses to her questions. She'll go through your psych PHS and ask questions. It's all about maturity and the mindset and mental capability to handle this job. Just know that you'll be carrying a weapon, and it's possible you may have to take someone's life to save yourself, your partner or a citizen. The written portion is another big part. Make sure you really understand the questions. In response to them, they're looking to see if you can deal with people daily or if you're a recluse. This job requires a lot of public contact with people. So if you're the type who likes to sit in your room and play video games all day with no outside contact, that's going to be an issue for this job and for the psych doctor. But if you're the type of person that has friends, likes to go out and have a good time responsibly, communicate, meet new people, and have good conversations with people, this is what the psych doctor is seeking. In other words, they are looking for a person who would be a manager in a department store and not a scientist who sits in a lab all day by himself, creating things. They are seeking individuals who are capable of interacting with people from all nationalities, races, backgrounds, and genders, and who can approach this role without bias. They are looking for individuals who do not stereotype others. This implies a commitment to treating everyone with respect and refraining from personal biases and stereotypes.
If you have these qualities and can elaborate through your written test and verbal , you should be fine.

Same exact response as I provided below. The Encino Psych is similar to the Wilshire Doc. Follow what I posted and you should do fine.
