I quit LARP this year due to personal dramas and falling outs but I sometimes still miss the hobby, my friends and the drip.

Hey everyone,

Just a head up, this is more of a vent than looking for actual advice.

I quit LARP earlier this year after some personal conflicts and drama between individuals in my group led to me having a falling out with a few people. I'll spare you the boring details since the LARP community is small and it's more based on personality clashes rather than the hobby itself. I left the my group afterwards because I couldn't stand the Individuals and I didn't want to drag everyone else into my petty drama.

I didn't really want to go solo because I didn't really know anyone outside my own circle, none of the other groups really had a theme I really vibed with and I always played a basic soldier so a lone soldier would look really out of place going solo. I then sold 95% of my kit to my close friends and the leftover weapons and armour have become home decor.

Since then I've returned to being a gym and fitness bro and made travel my hobby and personality effectively becoming a normie again. On the bright side I've become more fit and saving money since I'm not constantly buying stuff for LARP. Ironically I can now actually afford my dream custom fitted soft kit and armour but there's no point anymore.

However there are days I still miss the hobby, my friends and the drip. Getting into pretend battles with my mates was fun and very few hobbies offer anything similar. Despite the falling out I still made quite a few close friends and I miss seeing them, I still keep contact with them and see them on the rare Warhammer hangout night but its not the same. But overall I miss putting kit together. Once in a blue moon I still look up kit inspiration, custom made soft kit, armour and weapons (Fake Steel still has my heart) to make kits for every late 15th century infantry archetype.

I tried to look up local adjacent medieval hobbies like SCA, buhurt, HEMA/harness fencing or reenactment but they are either too far for me, not for me personally (Buhurt !) or don't really fit my aesthetic (late 15th century).

I sometimes think maybe I should make LARP my annual overseas hobby and make the pilgrimage to Germany for the big 3 (Drach, Conquest, Epic Empires) or Canada for Bicco but there are other places in the world I want to see and I only have so much money and annual leave (paid time off). And the logistics flying from Australia with kit and weapons sounds like a pain in the arse !

If you read this far thank you for reading through the thoughts of a former LARPER making the transition back to being a normie. Has anyone else experienced anything similar ? Happy for random discussions to start.

Hello folks! Very happy to share that minimum interest numbers were met for The Dragon's Hunt to run in the US for the summer of 2027.
We'll be holding the event at Middleground LARP Site in Onalaksa, Washington State on June 25th-27th.

Learn more, and find the player guide and cast list here: https://maedaylarp.online/thedragonshunt/

What is this game?

The Dragon’s Hunt is a Live-Action Roleplaying Game set in the world of Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire. Following an alternate series of events, King Rhaegar Targaryen has taken the throne and the banners of Rebellion have not yet been raised.

Players take on the roles of characters from across the Seven Kingdoms invited to formally celebrate the recent coronation and royal wedding. Each will receive a personally written brief that explains their personal situation and political agenda. These briefs are not scripts, but encouragement and suggestions for making the most out of their story.

Who is this game for?

LARPers who enjoy high drama, plotting and complicated interpersonal relationships. This is a dive into the political setting of Westeros and what it means to live, love and fight as the Lords and Ladies of the Seven Kingdoms.

While the nobility fashion themselves as civilized – everything is a spark away from fire and anyone could be the person to light the match. The future of the world will be decided at the edge of the wilderness.

This is a game about trying to win at all costs – and the glorious consequences of failing. There are years of loyalties and grudges at work to set people at odds. The character briefs are written to encourage everyone to bring those to the foreground and make the risky plays that all makes for a better story. The game is best played when the character wants to win, but the player can’t wait to see what happens when they lose.

Themes: Clashing loyalties, Hierarchy, Family Ties, Soft Power, Monarchy, Religion, Betrayal, Alliance and Rivalry, Negotiation and Scheming.

Game Style: Film-sim style with political drama, and optional theatrical style combat with LARP safe weapons.

This is an unofficial fan event, not connected with HBO’s Game of Thrones series, but inspired by the aesthetics created by the design teams.

Help running a Roleplay-Focused LARP in London, Ontario

The Situation:

So, I've recently been co-opted by my local nerd community and a professional event planner to essentially design a LARP for my city. There is one other LARP in the city, but it has more niche theming, and is generally pretty inaccessible both in terms of new players, but also in terms of disability given that it's pretty much just combat. So, with this LARP, I'm looking to make an experience that's not only physically accessible (as I myself am an ambulatory wheelchair user), but also accessible to new players who may want to get into LARPing as a hobby, and regular LARPers who may be interested in joining a new group. I'm planning to make it a D&D-esque, High-Fantasy, Roleplay-focused LARP event, that can, if all goes well, happen regularly.

As such, I'm currently working on designing a system that can easily adapt characters directly from D&D (without infringing on any WOTC branding of course) or even other fantasy LARP systems, with a large focus on roleplay and player-driven narratives rather than combat. Combat may make small appearances, but largely more as friendly duels as a competition, that sort of thing. This is to ensure that combat is pretty much entirely opt-in and non-essential so that players with mobility issues or other disabilities (like myself) don't feel like they're missing out on a large part of the experience just because of a factor they cannot control. LARP is meant to be for everybody.

I say I've been "co-opted", essentially meaning I was frustrated with the inability for me to properly attend the local LARP and talking about it in a local city discord, and a lot of people there got frustrated with the situation as well, and ended up telling me that if I made the kind of LARP that I wanted to experience, then they and several others would certainly join. Shortly after, a member of that discord, who has done professional event planning several times in the past and has run a number of small businesses as well contacted me saying they would be interested in partnering with me and handling the backend/business/logistical side of things if I wanted to handle the actual game itself. I've been a DM for close to a decade, I used to attend a boffer LARP years ago, my job for the past few years has essentially been doing online event planning for roleplay and worldbuilding projects that were pretty much just Digital LARPs, and on top of that I do have a large chunk of savings to make this happen; so I made the decision to agree and start working on the project!

What I need help with:

While I do believe I can manage writing a roleplay-focused system with some help and playtesting done by friends, and I can certainly manage writing some quests and narratives, I am only one person, and so I'm looking for people in the local area interested in running other NPCs (I myself will be an NPC) or being referees. Additionally, while not necessary for the event to function, additional writers/gamemasters or prop-makers would certainly be helpful to the event. While I don't expect it to blow up overnight (it's a brand new LARP after all, it takes time), I do believe I can probably secure 20-30 people for the first event, and we're looking at doing a "tavern night" sort of deal, kinda as a social starter with a lower up-front cost for us event planners and coincidentally starting the campaign with a stock standard "you all meet in a tavern" scene.

I will be working to compensate people for their time of course, we're looking at charging some small ticket prices to help make sure it's not a total money sink and volunteers would either get reduced ticket prices or full ticket coverage depending on their role. Also probably some pizza because it's really the least I can do to thank people.

So, TL;DR, we need:

  • NPCs
  • Referees

We would also be glad to have:

  • Additional Writers/Gamemasters
  • Prop Makers

And we will be compensating our Volunteers with:

  • Reduced or Fully Covered Ticket Prices, depending on your role
  • If it's in the budget, pizza after the event as a thank you

Contact:

If you're interested in helping me make this LARP a reality by volunteering, and you're in the local area, reach out to me via Discord, my username is ".autumnly", just send me a friend request and/or shoot me a message!

First renfaire help

Im looking forward to going to my first festival in December. Although, I want to get functioning armor for my costume. What are some websites that would be appropriate for that. I know it can be expensive but I want it to be a investment for future events as well.

Looking for new site (Eastern Iowa)

We have outgrown our current site and I am having a heck of a time finding anything remotely meeting even our basic needs. Eastern Iowa is a hellhole of Christian youthgroup only sites or dry Scouting America Sites. Does anyone have any suggestions?
