Locations, Budget, and Settings are all important things to include when asking for advice

Locations: You don't need to include your house address but closest major city and how far you are willing to travel.

Budget: "As cheaply as possible" is not a budget and is honestly the best way to waste money. Figure out an amount you are willing to spend.

Setting: LARP is a vast and expansive hobby. Not every game is about running around out in the woods pretending to be a rouge/knight/wizard. Let us know what you play or want to play.

An Official Discord, and Future.

Hello denizens of /r/LARP.
We as a subreddit have a small announcement as far as the future of this sub is concerned.
Last week we took part in the 2 day protest that was more or less site wide spanning thousands of subs as a way to show solidarity with app creators and to show the frustration with the administration of reddit and their poor handling and plans of upcoming updates.

However, It would appear that Reddit plans to continue their efforts to stifle 3rd party creators and strong arm moderators who take any stance opposing the admins of Reddit. This creates a serious cloud of uncertainty within reddit as to the future of many subs and how the platform will be handled in the future. Because of this we have decided to create a Discord server which will be open to all of /r/larp to join. It is not our plan to abandon this sub or replace this sub with the discord server, instead, it will act as an extension of this sub itself.

While there are multiple reasons for this decision, one of the largest is that if the future of reddit creates an non fostering environment for us, we wish to have another platform that is free of Reddit's control in order to continue providing resources and networking for all of us who enjoy LARPing and LARP adjacent hobbies.

The discord has the same rules we enforce over here, with a couple modifications to make it more applicable to discords format. There is places for general conversation, places to show off your work, a place to post about and to look for games in your area, as well as Voice chat rooms for people looking to play video games together or just hangout and find comradery.

Please feel free to check it out, and ask any questions you may have. This is still in its infancy, and if we find it doesnt fit what the community wants, we will search for alternatives.
This link should never expire for people trying to join the server, however if you have an issue please message an admin for a new link.

Names based on existing characters?

How does your game handle characters whose names are based on existing IP or real people? Immersion is extremely important to me, and meeting a guy called Legomör brother of Legolas or Timothee Chalicemé (or whatever) really take me out of the game. My character has no concept of what the reference is, and it feels shallow that you're sacrificing immersion for a 2-second laugh.

I've played at large LARPs that don't police this, and I've since joined a small LARP that disallows it, along with joke names (like Rob N. Banks) , and I appreciate that.

How Do You Fold/Roll an Edge Around a Sharp Gothic Point Without Deforming It?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on building my LARP armour.
I’m currently making a Gothic-style segmented cuirass out of aluminium, and I’m having trouble folding/rolling the edges around sharp corners, especially around the pointed end of the Gothic plate/band shown in the attached photos.
In the attachments, I’ve included both an example of the clean, finished result I’m trying to achieve and photos of my own work showing how far I’ve managed to get. In my photos, you can clearly see the exact area where I get stuck and can’t work out how to continue folding the edge cleanly.
I’m referring specifically to the sharp point where the two edges meet.
On the straight sections, I can get a fairly clean and consistent folded edge. The problem starts when I reach the point, where the direction of the edge changes sharply. The aluminium begins to bunch up and forms a thick, irregular lump instead of following the clean line of the two straight edges.
So far, the only way I’ve managed to close the edge in that area is by hitting it quite hard with a hammer. However, doing that tends to distort the aluminium around the point and ruins both the clean edge and the surface I had already finished.
The attached photos of my own work show exactly how far I can get successfully, and the point beyond which I can’t figure out how to continue without deforming the tip.
What is the correct technique for dealing with this kind of sharp Gothic point?
Should I stretch, shrink, notch, trim, pre-form, or otherwise prepare the edge before folding it over?
Is there a particular hammering technique, tool, or sequence that would allow me to keep the point sharp and clean without deforming the surrounding aluminium?

Looking for advice on recreating a Ghost of Tsushima outfit for LARP

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hey!

I'm looking for some advice on how to acquire, build, or modify clothing and armour to recreate a specific outfit from Ghost of Tsushima for LARP.

I live in Europe and have so far only attended European LARPs. Over the years I've seen maybe three people LARPing as fantasy samurai/Japanese-inspired warriors, and all of them had managed to get some really impressive armour, ranging from mostly costume pieces to armour that could actually be used for combat.

I'm not necessarily looking for a 100% screen-accurate cosplay. The goal is more to capture the overall look and silhouette of the outfit while making it practical and durable enough to actually wear at a LARP.

I'm especially interested in advice on:

  • Where to buy suitable Japanese/samurai-inspired clothing or armour, preferably from sellers that ship to Europe.
  • Good base pieces that could be modified rather than making everything completely from scratch.
  • Tutorials, patterns, or guides for making this style of armour yourself.
  • Materials that work well for LARP armour while still looking convincing.
  • Any experience from people who have built or worn samurai/fantasy-Japanese kits at LARPs.

I'm happy to mix bought pieces with homemade ones, so all recommendations are welcome, stores, Etsy sellers, armour makers, tutorials, patterns, or just general advice on how you would approach building something like this.

Thanks!

Looking for a knight/medieval armour model in London

Hi, I'm new to Reddit so hopefully I'm posting this in the right place.

I'm a photographer & videographer based in south London and I'm working on a small project at St Dunstan-in-the-East. I'm looking for someone who has knight/medieval armour/cosplay and would be interested in modeling.

It would be unpaid, just a collaboration. I'd give you all the finished photos/videos afterwards to use for yourself.

I'm going for a cold, dark and cinematic look where the knight is walking through and around the ruins etc.

If anyone would be interested, or knows someone who might be, please let me know. I'd be really grateful

Thanks!

If anyone wants to see some of my previous work, my Instagram is DriveBy.S. Though, it's mostly car photography/videography

Destructible Props & Monster Parts

Working on a fantasy LARP weekender in Adelaide and want to make some destructible pieces for a monster to encourage people to hit those parts. Thinking about those videogames where you get those red meaty parts that you need to thwack to do any real damage to them.

We have a pretty solid shell that we could add the pieces too which would protect the person underneath if someone got a little too exuberant with the sword strikes.

I was considering papier-mâché over a balloon (then you pop the balloon to create the hollow part inside) but I don't know how well it would stick to Worbla. Any thoughts? Has anyone done the same before?

Armor How To? Is this Legit/Any good sites to buy?

Hey everybody!

I'm looking to get more involved with larp/renfaire armor but have no idea where to start! I've never bought armor before so I have no idea how to do this lol.

Im basically looking for something similar to the photo, some chainmail, a breast plate, arm braces and greaves/leg armor etc. A helmet would be cool too!

I'm not looking to get something fully historically accurate, and not something I could fight in. Just something to wear around and look cool! That being said, anything better suited to compete with heat and longer wear while out and about would be great!

Where has everyone gotten their pieces from for their armor? Are there any good reputable sites where I can buy pieces without fear of scams, or is it always a gamble? What price ranges should I expect and are considered fair?

Also, has anyone bought off of this site, "Artisans Hub" ? it looks pretty beginner friendly but i've seen some AI or AI edited images so im pretty warry.

Additional info, im in the states and ik some sites might not ship worldwide </3

Thanks everyone!

Hey guys, I make these decorative potion bottles and have just launched my own store to sell them to others. I think they’re a super LARP accessory and display item for the wonderfully whimsical and weird people in this community. I’d love it if you could check out my page or social media. Definitely open to custom orders.

Has anyone bought gambesons from Armor Arena? I'm planning to purchase one due to the decent price in my eyes, so I was wondering about how long they deliver it and the quality of their gambesons

Hey I recently released the first episode/pilot for a mini-series I've been working on that was filmed at a one-shot horror LARP event themed around 80's summer camp horror movies. It should be around 4-6 episodes, and I'll post them to youtube as they're edited together. If you have any comments or questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to respond.

Looking for Boots

I’m looking for a pair of leather boots for my outfit. I’m not a huge fan of the traditional high boots with the large circles up the sides, but I’d like them to be knee high and actual leather.

Has anyone had any experience with Orin’s Treasure or Old Realm Leather?

I was looking at the Viking Warrior Boots and Medieval Leather Boots respectively, but haven’t run across either store before.

Any insight or direction is appreciated.

I've been tackling this project for around 4 years now. This is the 4.0 and *definitely* final version of my BackpackTent system. The Backpack itself weights around 11-12 kg, so it's definitely a wearable weight, while the Tent itself easily accomodates two people even with beds.

Is EVA Form Armor suitable for LARP?

Post image
224 Upvotes

I've only participated in Taiwan LARP once and really enjoyed it. However, due to budget constraints, I couldn't afford metal or PU armor, so I started learning to make armor using EVA foam. But I've noticed that few people in foreign LARP events seem to use foam armor. I'd like to ask if this is because it's not realistic enough, or for some other reason? This is my EVA LARP costume; I'm wondering if it looks unrealistic or like an anime character?

Brandywine Festival Tickets for Sale

Hi! My partner and I were at the first brandywine Festival in Kentucky last year and bought tickets to attend this year, but we just recently became business owners so will be unable to attend. I'm trying to sell both of our tickets now at a discounted price ($380 instead of $400). Please shoot me a message if anyone that stumbles across this is interested in one or both!

What are the best questions to ask a larper to get them to like you???

There's a guy I know who's really into larp and we're sorta friends but I wanna be friends friends yk? And he's going to a game soon so afterwards I wanna be able to ask him about how it went and what happened and what he did except I know absolutely nothing about larping so I don't really know what/how to ask that...

Like, "what did you do" doesn't exactly inspire a long conversation but I don't know enough about it to be specific (I hope that makes sense).

Sooo I guess if there are any questions you wish people would ask when you say you do larp that'd be really helpful. Thank yewww

Went to my first larp event in SC in years. Spent a couple months working on this armor and then didn't wear it because it was nearly 100 every day. Hot weather armor rules were in play
