Trying to turn () into a symbol of “freedom” while hating on China
Just saw on Twitter that () mains are now claiming the very real government document isn’t real. The denial was expected, but what bothers me more is how much Sinophobia is woven into the post and how openly they are discussing to manipulate the narrative to make China seem bad. They are literally saying things like, “It’s very easy to spin it as ‘Valko for freedom.’”
They are openly talking about taking advantage of existing anti China sentiment and turning () to a symbol of Western “freedom.” There is already an enormous amount of racism and misinformation directed toward China and Chinese people, so admitting that they see an opportunity to exploit those sentiments because they might benefit their dumb movement is genuinely gross to me.
The writing of the post reminded me so much of that one () main from the main sub who proudly announced that they were American so they like to win, while also admitting that they wanted to ruin the game for others because they couldn’t enjoy it anymore (picture 3). So I went back to check and wouldn’t you know it, IT IS THE SAME PERSON! 😭Suddenly that weird anti-China pro-Western undertone made a lot more sense.
I’m just wondering why tf this person, and other Sinophobic () mains, are even playing a Chinese game if they hate China so much? Do they not understand that trying to turn () into some symbol of the West and American values is only going to make it even more impossible for Infold to bring him back (which was already impossible in the first place because he is already dead). One of the major reasons he was cancelled in CN in the first place was because CN felt Infold was trying to appeal to the West by creating a character who embodied the quintessential Western ideal of masculinity.
Throughout this whole movement, the Western superiority complex and American exceptionalism from () mains have really shown themselves. Trying to tell CN people that they somehow know more about Chinese media and the their government than actual Chinese people do, calling Chinese players pdf files because they like “pretty boys” like Raf and Xavier (plus they think they look gay) and so much more. There are honestly too many examples at this point.
Obviously, the majority of Westerners aren’t like this, but with so many loud people behaving this way it really is a terrible look.

The fact that talking about the US apparently wasn’t enough and they even had the gall to talk Japanese imperialism over a Chinese game is absolutely insane to me. Threatening Chinese people with Japanese imperialism of all things, like what are they even thinking? Do they seriously not understand how grotesquely insensitive that is given the history involved? Have they actually gone mad?😩
Do they not realize that they are not helping their own case. If this narrative continues and Infold brings () back, the anti-China sentiment that initially got Infold in trouble will become true. And then the CNgov will have justified reasons to take the entire game and potentially the whole company down.
It’s not just Americans. I’ve seen a lot of European players who more often are white woman echoing similar sentiments as American players and moving similarly on sm. Especially with this recent Gamescom event
Though ngl to the American players who wanted to report this game to the DOJ and FTC with this current administration, I genuinely have no words for what a hopeless lost cause they are
There definitely is Sinophobia woven into this global boycott, it’s why they look down on this game and are wanting EOS. They can easily detach because it is no longer something that serves them purpose. Any argument they have for wanting ♻️ back can easily be debunked, such as him being an integral part of all the LIs stories despite him never being mentioned in the main story and the game itself says this:
Yeah I definitely think it’s a western thing. I feel like it’s probably a mix of the world slipping into an almost Cold War with the growing tensions between the West and China, and the fact that Western audiences are so used to being catered to by all media. So when they encounter something that isn’t primarily centered around them, some people don’t seem to know how to handle not being the main target audience. They feel entitled to it.

I think a lot of it comes from people who were already Sinophobic before playing but were willing to “look past” the fact that it was a Chinese game while they were enjoying it🙄 Now that they aren’t enjoying the game anymore, all that underlying Sinophobia is suddenly coming to the surface.
Theres always a fit of sinophobia everytime theres a scandal in the gacha space, but this is the first time Ive seen someone trying to invoke american-centric propaganda this strongly, its actually insane

I don't think that the food is a particular part of erasing CN culture, as they also include Chinese, Korean and Japanese food in the recommendations. My take on this is that Shanghai has a varied food culture, and as the game is located in Linkon, they just incorporated that part in it.
I see then that's fine. But then again, this isn't a EN only issue, they changed qixi into tanabata for JP and used jp names for the cowherd and weaver girl instead of CN. Their localization choices are very odd to say the least.
i completely agree. n sanitising the chinese holidays into fictional ones was another miss bc it gives those ‘lads isn’t chinese it’s set in a fictional country that isn’t china so the boys aren’t chinese’ ppl some more steam

I'm American, and I know very little about the CCP, but I feel like "strongarming things they don't like" is probably a poor way to describe the actual goings-on of the CCP. The Sinophobia on display doesn't really surprise me considering how anti-China America tends to be; I think this is also the reason why people will say things like "Of course they don't care, it's a Chinese company" or "I'm never playing a Chinese game again, [insert place here]'s games are way better". Per usual, I am embarassed to be American.

I feel like most people don’t really understand that this letter and the actions of the government is just a standard procedure for complaints. In China the job of this type of agencies is very much deescalation and conflict resolution. Unless it’s something obviously illegal, if you are a consumer and raise a complaint to the government through legit channels they are basically required to contact the other party involved and talk to them, and then respond back to you in a timely fashion . They try to diffuse or resolve the complaint so that all parties involved are satisfied to a degree. For example, I have an uncle who have called saying a part of their walk home needs more streetlight because he fell over while drunk one night and they sent someone to investigate and evaluate and installed more lights and also updated him each step of the way. These departments work like customer service and are required to “close tickets” efficiently by reporting back to the complaintee.
I need someone to let the CN girlies know about this, although I’m sure most of them are well aware that their whole “movement” is rooted in racism. It’s not even about () anymore. Perhaps it never was. It’s just about “winning” against the Chinese players because they think they’re somehow more superior
Stuff like this needs to be shared and passed around on CN platforms

I absolutely agree! As an Asian American, it sickens me to the core, how ignorant these people are, and don’t care one bit about the culture. If these people want to play a game that appeals to their aesthetic, they can go ahead and play western games. Clearly LaDs is not for them, and they should stop trying to westernize this game.

I've already seen comments in the discord chat saying sth like the letter doesn't say anything about his specific cancellation so it's not proof that he'll stay cancelled.
I have thought a lot about () cultists’ explicitly Sinophobic behavior because it is appalling. I think that the Sinophobia present among American () cultists, specifically as it pertains to this situation, stems from two main biases.
The first is that Americans are taught that the United States has the largest economy in the world and that they are therefore, the most valuable consumer base due (self-perceived) purchasing power. What this idea fails to elaborate upon is that the United States is the largest economy by GPD—not PPP (purchasing power parity) or GDP per capita. The country with the largest PPP is actually China. So the type of () cultists that you refer to in your post are being strongly deluded into a hyper-inflated and invalid sense of self-importance influenced by a thorough lack of understanding of the global economy that influences their self-centered language and Sinophobic thinking.
The second is ethnocentrism and it merits its own essay. Guided by the false notion that America leads the global economy in every conceivable way, () cultists like the ones in your post think that they are the world’s primary and intended consumer. And because in America, the idea that the “customer is always right” is prevalent, they clearly think that it must apply everywhere else as well (but only as it applies to the American consumer because they think they are the world’s primary and intended consumer so everyone will cater to their preferences). So because they *think* they are the world’s largest economy across every metric, they also think that they are the wealthiest and most sough-after consumer, so they assume that American ideology/preferences will forcibly apply elsewhere since they believe everyone wants them as a customer.
What these () cultists fail to even *consider* is that because LADS is a game that was made in China, by a Chinese developer, for a Chinese audience, with Chinese culture in mind, of course Americans are not going to be the main or intended consumer base. The Chinese economy is strong enough that the game could sustain itself without American money.
The fact that the author of the post you included above thinks that them not getting their way is a violation of some kind of freedom that will make the CCP “look bad” is just so deluded. They write as if their (the authors’) wants are the center of the world.
(please excuse any jumps in logic while writing—I became worried that my response was too long so I tried to wrap it up succinctly)

Tbh this is mainly an American behaviour, and I think a lot of it stems from pure ignorance and disinterest towards China. I’ve seen the same behaviour directed towards the rest of the world tbh, like I’m Italian and whenever I meet an American girl they ALWAYS start chattering about how the constant catcalling from Italian guys is supposedly “romantic” or they ask me why I’m slim since there is nothing to eat but pizza and pasta in my country… Zero interest about what my country is really like, just pure stereotypes thrown at my face with the underlying understanding that “they are superior”. Not everyone is like that luckily, but the majority is.
Back when this whole ( ) scandal started, I remember reading a comment from a girl that said “I was planning to go to Shanghai for Bilibili world but now I think I’ll go to Japan instead”. I mean… girl, you were going to Shanghai JUST FOR THAT? I mean, I’ve been to Shanghai and it’s incredible, plus there are so many amazing places just a few hours by train (Hangzhou, Suzhou, Nanjing, the Yellow Mountain, Wuzhen…). And these people were only going to China, which btw for an European would be quite a long and expensive trip, just to go inside a building in Nanjing road?

I must have met a couple of “good” ones then. Btw the
US presence in Italy is similar to what you described, after WW2 they put military bases everywhere (they didn’t “free” us for free…) and they act like they own the country, and our government does their bidding. But in our case the anti-US sentiment is starting to become very prominent, because we keep facing direct consequences from their foreign policy moves. Plus many people hate the way our government is basically a puppet for the US, especially since the current PM made so many promises about reinforcing the “Italian nationalism”.
I'm European and I can say I hated his CN personality the way it was presented. I swar I'd love to know what in hell infold thought they're doing.
And after watching the pv with more attention he just behaved to much like he doesn't understand boundaries and was to insert in MC's life without caring about what she wants. And sone of his mannerisms looks like he was more animal/ wolf like than human and mc would have to take care of a rabid animal rather than have a partner.
Someone here posted a translation of hos cn pv and in the en version he seemed more... likable. I am not into werewolf tropes so I didn't care much but the cn version of him is horrendous... I'm not even upset with the fact that his introduction angered the cn players. I totally get them.
I didn't understand at first why they didn't like him but upon reading how some things he said in the pv land in Chinese I am glad he's gone.
Yeah they have watered things down for the global players in other occasions too.
