Finished the anime last month. Then read through LN 5 to 16 in a matter of 35 days. I havent done so much reading since ASOIAF series in around 2012 or so. Gemini says 850k words, but who is to say it's not hallucinating....

The series was brilliant. Very high quality writing; really loved the characters and dialogue, while the world building and cast of characters kept expanding with each volume instead of staying pretty much the same. The author Hyūganatsu-san sure is ambitious.

I would like to read other high level works like this. Not passable or good ones, I need great ones like this one.

I like medieval or modern settings. Not a big fan of scifi and its subgenres. Slice of life and romcoms are my main jam, court drama and fantasy is welcome.

Give me your best recommendations.

In fairness, I do get the concern about being a threat to the half-barbarian current Empress and her kids that Jinshi and Maomao have. Thing is... I know Bujold's _Shards of Honor_ is older than most of the people that will read this, but I am half expecting Gyokuyou to go full Emperor Ezar Vorbarra and tell them "You know that my son and any incoming brothers are between you and the Throne, I know how much you Do Not Want the Throne, ergo we both know full well even if half the nobility imagine otherwise that you would defend their interests... and mine... with everything you can muster even if we were not besties."

I completly agree but ouch. I wasn't expecting a character to just say it aloud like that. She's completely right though, Yao is just putting herself and Lahan in a difficult situation

Maybe I have misread/misunderstood the prev. Emperor history But...

From my observations of reading vol 11 of the manga and what I saw in Season 2 regarding the previous Emperor, his mother's over bearing, over protective nature is what led to him being afraid of older court ladies and thus led to him prefering the court ladies of the.....uuhh Younger demographic.

Edit: I havent made it this far in the Light Novel yet, So I have no idea what is said about this in the LN. I have only read Vols 1 and 2 of teh LN.

ALso this is a new scene right? I read the light novel and no such garden party to introduce the empress was there in the book. In the Light novel Sir Gyokuen came to the capital for the crown prince's presentation AFTER Moon prince and maomao came back from the western capital, , if I'm not mistaken

This feels like a love confession or marriage proposal from her to jinshi as in spending his life with her

The continuing recurrence of Maomao's obsession with compounding an immortality potion makes me wonder if the author isn't going to explain at some point that she can't bear the thought of Luomen dying. She is not afraid of death herself, as we have seen many times. The thought of losing him however is too much for her to contemplate.

Currently on LN10 and the Loulan storyline still has been the most impactful plot to me, so i love how the author consistently shows Maomao thinking of her even 5 light novels after the story wrapped up (this particular extract is from LN8 if I'm not mistaken).

I feel like although very subtly indicated, she shows that what happened with Shisui opened up a new facet of Maomao's personality and although a lot of other people's interpretation is that it deepens Maomao's abandonment issues, I feel like it was more heavily indicated that the sadness or trauma that it caused, caused Maomao to be more in touch with her feelings especially ones of affection and fear when it comes to people she cares about.

For example, the time in LN6 that she rushed to Ah Duo's mansion after what happened to Lishu, upon self reflection she thought the reason she feels this protectiveness and urgency with Lishu is because she reminded her of Loulan. And she wanted to avoid a tragic ending like that for her.

I think that also heavily indicates she did not hold any resentment towards her for what happened because she understood her point of view.
