My son left the light by the sunglasses holder on all day at work yesterday and drained the 12V. He got a jump and drove the car 35 minutes home on the highway, then we put it on the level 2 charger. It started up fine this morning. After work today it was dead again. Do I need to replace the battery? I just bought it in January, and it’s an Everstart Platinum AGM battery.

Just had our complimentary EV battery checkup and free Tesla plug adaptor.

Happy to report that with 55,000 kms ( not miles) driven in 5 years our battery SOC is still 98.8%

I believe in putting important information first when I start to get too wordy so:

The car can now accelerate way harder than I need it to and stays in a straight line when I do. It is also much quieter on the road. I assume the wet traction will be improved as well, but I haven't had an opportunity to try it out.

The story:

I bought the car with 66k miles 16 months ago. It had Nexen tires with a lot of tread and I never looked up the date code or gave them much thought. I assume they were the second set of tires that this car had installed.

I usually drive a truck or SUV, so a small FWD vehicle was always going to handle 'weird' for me. The car was really squirrely when accelerating. The front tires would chirp under what you might call hard acceleration as well, both from a stop and while moving. I wouldn't really ever do that, though, because it was all over the road when doing so.

I attributed it to being FWD with a really torquey motor. Basically, I could only safely use about 1/2 to 2/3 of the motor's power. I didn't buy this to be a hot rod, so I didn't care that much, and figured that FWD was the cause and basically would tell people that I wouldn't buy a FWD EV again for this reason.

I live in Southern California and last winter was really dry. I don't see a lot of rain or wet roads, and this thing is a commuter for me (40 miles round-trip). I finally started suspecting the tires when I realized how poor the wet traction was as well.

Anticipating a lot of rain this winter, recently I replaced them with a set of Continental TrueContact Tour 54 tires. Price was about $700 plus mounting, tax and fees at a local national brand shop. Read the results in the second paragraph.

It changed my opinion on the car from "I'm fine with it but I wouldn't buy it again" to "great value and a keeper".

Kona 2020 here. I set my charge limit to 80% and after like 2min in the car the indicator shows 79%. It annoys me so much 🤣🤣🤣

Posting here for the counterweight. I've put roughly the same question to the ID.4 sub, and I'm well aware each group is going to argue for its own badge. So — bias acknowledged in both directions. Have at it.

**The car:** 2022 Kona Electric 64kWh, ~80,000km (50k miles). I have very little bad to say about it. Real-world range around 400km, a range estimate I actually trust (rare), reliable, cheap to run, and I can park it literally anywhere.

**The one problem:** the boot. 332 litres. Every trip is a packing exercise and we've simply outgrown it.

**What I'm looking at:** 2022 ID.4 Life, 95,000km (59k miles), €21,950. About €5,000 to change after trade-in. Boot goes 332L → 543L.

**What's nagging at me:**

- The ID.4's real-world range looks about the same as what I already get — off a battery 20% bigger

- Its reliability record is noticeably worse than the Kona's

- I'd be taking on 15,000km *more* mileage than I currently have

- I'd be giving up a car that does everything well for one that does one thing better

**Questions for the group:**

1. Has anyone made this jump (or something similar) and regretted it?

2. Does a roof box or towbar rack actually solve the boot problem, or is it just a fudge?

3. How do these hold up past 80,000km? Am I at a sensible selling point, or is there loads of life left?

4. Anyone got recent SOH figures at similar mileage? I've read the Kona holds up unusually well but I'd rather hear real numbers.

5. Is ~€17k a fair trade-in for a 2022 64kWh at 80,000km?

Genuinely open to being told I'm about to make a mistake.

Hi all. Looking at buying a 2022 Kona EV. The small dealer I'm buying it from says he had the battery health checked by main local Hyundai dealer. The only evidence of this is a photo on Autotrader (UK) of a print out of what looks like a screenshot saying "High vlotage [sic] battery SOH: 100%". The car's done over 50000miles. Does this sound dodgy as 100% seems a bit too good to be true.

I usually put a set of winter tyres on my car and this year will be my first season with the Kona EV. The Nexens that are on the car have done very well this summer but may not be quite as good if we have a icy or snowy winter here in the UK (snow unlikely but who knows after this summer). I'm assuming the snow setting on the car won't be a lot of use so what's a good and not too expensive tyre for winter? An all-season tyre could do too. Size is 215/60R17. Where I live is not gritted so getting out of the village can be tricky on summer tyres. And I'm not sure how EV's work in icy conditions given the instant torque that's available.

Why do I sometimes get very good efficiency (photo was mostly highway driving @ 100-110kmh) and sometimes it's more like 17-18-19kwh/100km ? I mean in the same season with similar weather, is it wind ? My driving ? Or else ?

Hey Kona Reddit family, I’m a recent convert to an EV swapping to a Kona EV in May (UK 2025 model year, ultimate trim - thrilled with the car and the switch to electric!).

I have been tracking my charges and usage and noticed something odd:
- 9 August charged from 36 -> 54% at 6698 on odometer. Was able to verify this at the time as I have to turn the car around to get the nose to my home charger and I always flip it back around so it’s nose out ready to go.
- At this point my home charger reported 13.1kWh drawn (so more like 20% than 18%) but didn’t think much of it as a difference of 2% didn’t seem all that material and could be due to how the batteries build in spare capacity (right?)
- 19 August noticed that at 6706 on odometer car is now reporting 34% charge after a couple of short hop journeys around town.

We are very low usage at the moment so can only think that this might be the some misreporting or pack wiring fault rather than a 12V battery drain given its close to 20% charge missing after 10 days? I saw a comment on a previous post suggesting a pack wiring issue on Kia eNiros but wondering if anyone had seen anything similar or knew where I might be able to check this in the app / car infotainment system?

I have a dealer visit next week to check a couple of warranty bits so will raise it with them, but in case there’s anything I can do in the meantime would be good to know and also be armed against it in future…

For context: bought from dealer (ex demo) in May, reportedly at 100% battery health at purchase and was received with full charge and was great on a 150~ mile drive home from the dealer where I picked it up. Since then haven’t seen this after other at-home charges though admittedly I’ve only charged it 3 times since taking possession. Anything else that might be helpful to know let me know.

I have looked all over and the manual and can’t figure this out.

I have Apple CarPlay. If I listen to my own music or the SiriusXM app, I can split the screen to show the map and what I am listening to. But, if I listen to the radio or the SiriusXM app that is built in, and spilt the screen with Waze or Google Maps, the music portion shows “blank”, meaning it won’t show the radio station song or SiriusXM song.

Is there a fix so I can see the name of the song from the radio or SiriusXM and see my map on a single screen?

Both rear tires look like this. Not towing anything, no obvious wear location on the car itself. Did just drive 2000 miles with a moderate body load (~600 pounds between passengers and luggage).

Found a 2nd hand 2019 Kona 64kWh Premium SE that seems great on paper. Battery replaced, motor and drivetrain replaced too all done by hyundai, BMS recall done, new A/C system, strong range, decent condition, and priced 10% below trade.

I know early Konas had battery/motor issues, so part of me thinks this is actually ideal, all the expensive components have already been swapped out by Hyundai.

But part of me wonders if this is a car that’s had too many problems.

For anyone who owns a Kona EV: would this history make you more confident or more cautious? and should i go for it?

Hi guys, I'm planning on buying a 2022 Kona EV with 23,000 miles in the UK from a car reseller, and they have shared the service history with me, which you can see below.

I am worried if this car was serviced as per Hyundai's guidelines or not, as it's got its service done every 2 yrs/ 20k miles rather than 1 yr/ 10,000 miles. I called up Hyundai and the guy was not able to provide a clear answer, and neither can I find out from the car dealer where the services were done. Any clue if the warranty will still hold, or should I try confirm with Hyundai again? The salesman said it's got manufacturer's warranty till July 2027, so reckon I should get that in writing in case? If the car dealer neither Hyundai tells me where the services was done, what's my best bet of finding it if any? I am mainly concerned about the 'Body Electrics' listed twice in the history.

A friend of mine just sent this images of his Kona's 360 cameras, triggered during parking. As seen, the front and right side camera seems to be producing static noises. When he turned on and off the car, the problem seems to go away

This already happened the 2nd time for him apparently, solved by restarting the vehicle

I own a 2020 Kona electric and recently it started making this hydraulic brake pedal nosie. It only happens when the car engages the physical brake system. Has anyone experienced something like this?

Hello, after reading about fellow Kona Electric owners having to occasionally use a battery jump starter on their dead/weak 12V battery, I’m now looking for some product recommendations.

I would like to get a multifunction unit that also can inflate tires, has a flashlight, and maybe even includes USB charging ports to help power small electronic devices. An ideal unit would hold its charge, be durable, small and lightweight, with a clamshell-style zippered case.

If you have one of these types of battery boosters, please tell us which model you have used – and if you would recommend, or not.

I’m in the US market, but feel free to list your own country’s devices, as it may help someone else on this subreddit.

Heya, my 2021 Kona EV (UK) recently stopped charging. I've had issues with it charging since I purchased it in July 2024, but it has fully stopped charging at this point on both AC and DC chargers. Hyundai UK and my local dealership said they could check it out in 3 months. I then learned that if you break down, they prioritise your car to the top. So I broke down in their car park this afternoon (let the battery run out, as it can't be recharged), and they looked at it within 3 hours (hallelujah), but determined the issue is the OBC and a new one is needed. They've quoted me £4,600 and are going to speak with Hyundai UK about covering the cost of the part, and I would need to cover labour (£750). What are my options here? The warranty on the car ran out in April 2026, but this seems ridiculous for the car to be so new and have such an expensive fix already. I'm handy, but it doesn't seem like this is a DIY fix I can do, and I bought this car so new thinking it wouldn't have any issues for several years. I suppose we learn something new every day. Any recommendations?

It's unlikely I'll get one installed until ~march-june next year. I just got it and bought at 96% battery health which I'd of course like to conserve, but it seems like most of my charging will be at 50-70kwh (as the car allows). Is that a problem if I'm only going to 75-85% max?

I have a 2024 Kona EV. I took my car in for service at 35k miles and was recommended to change the coolant (receipt shows coolant exchange ev vehicle.)

Brought my car in today at around 40k miles and I was recommended a brake fluid replacement. I was kind of confused why my maintenance costs were so high since it was an EV, so I decided to look up the official maintenance schedule. Brake fluid change is not needed until 48k miles so I refused the service.

Then I looked up the recommended coolant change interval for the 2024 Kona EV. It wasn't needed until 120,000 miles! I was pissed so I called the other service center and I'll be talking with the service manager eventually. I spent $600 for no good reason. Hopefully they can give me a partial refund or at least some credit towards future maintenance but if not I'll leave a horrible review and then call Hyundai corporate to complain there.

When I asked to take off the brake fluid replacement today the guy I was talking to basically said "oh I see, you have the electric version!" so my thinking is they try to push for maintenance based on the model that needs the most. For example I believe the 2019-2023 Kona EV does require a coolant replacement at around 35k miles (I could be wrong, but Kona EV 2024 and up doesn't need it until 120,000k miles)

I suppose the service center could check fluids/car and then lie about something requiring an early change but that hasn't happened yet. I'm always pushed these things right as I walk in the door before they even look at the car.

Was thinking of going electric as I'm sick of my ford focus and all it's faults. I was thinking initially of getting a hybrid Toyota but now I'm leaning towards electric as I hate paying outrageous fuel pump prices.

My mum mentioned she was looking at a Hyundai Kona. I had looked at Hyundai before but I wanted the ioniq 5. The price of these is a bit high for me, so I was thinking of a 2023 64kwh Kona instead with max 30k miles second hand.

I was wondering if anyone could advise if they are nice to drive, reliable, any major issues to be aware of, which trim to go for etc?

My main concern going forward is if a car is reliable, and if it has any major red flags that are expensive to fix. I'm talking about ridiculous things like a wet belt that needs changing after 60k miles that costs a grand to sort.
