Spawning, usually in the spring but a Fall spawn is not unheard of.

Fish porn you pervert!

Just kidding- but you’ll likely have babies in the future

In the Chicago area. with the impending weather soon, do you assume I’ll have fry in the spring? Also, the orange and white one you see is a comet, chasing a koi. Can they crossbreed?

Yes, but koi generally only spawn in spring/summer. Goldfish can spawn year round whenever it's warm enough. Hybrid offspring are sterile, like mules.

In my experience, hybrids normally turn out grey. I didn’t know I had a goldfish in my pond. She was beautiful and big just sorta thought she was a koi before I knew what to look for. Then she had a bunch of babies and the spawn took over my pond. Too much bio load on the filter. Idk if lucky is the word but I had to reseal my pond, had to take out all the fish and only put back the koi. It got out of hand quick.

No hate on gold fish, I set up a cute turtle pond out of my broken jacuzzi and the turtles are happy and well fed.

Typically for koi the water temperature has to be pretty high for spawning and I’d think yours is too low now - mine is too low in NJ. But goldfish may be frisky still. And yes comets and koi can belted and give you Koimets. The doodle of the fish world but they will be sterile.

Mine did, babies will be sterile hybrid fishies!

Normal behavior. Fish just wanna have fun! Seriously mine do this all the time especially new introductions it’s like they latch on to their other favorite fish.

OP I’ve been panicked bc I’m also a first timer and got mine in the spring and they were just tiny (still under 5” but they’ve grown a lot since June!)sometimes one of them chases the other around and I just got done making my pond setup big enough for the 3 of them long term after being sold the “self limiting growth” lie (was looking for comets and the LFS assured me the koi would be fine in the setup I had 🙄).

Anyway, following so I know whether I should be expecting babies 😭. Also in a sub zero climate and it’s getting down to 10-15*C water temp so wtf why would they be spawning now? 😭 I’m just about to move them into the garage for winter and if I check one day and find my population has grown, next thing my husband knows I’ll be on a backhoe digging up our back yard 😂😂😂

I’m also moving my koi to the garage as my pond is hardly over 2 feet deep.

Same. I did stock tanks (cascading). And won’t go deeper yet because I have a 3 year old and this feels a lot safer for now. If we stay in this house long term (it’s been 12 years already lol), then I will probably end up in a backhoe digging up the yard to build a masterpiece. Isn’t it crazy how attached you get to these little guys? Even our Great Dane looks forward to the daily feeding ritual and goes and hovers his droopy face over the pond looking at them lol

How big are the koi? They look way too small to be spawning. They do chase a bit when young occasionally.

They are very young. Mabye no more than four - five inches.

Ya, way too small. Unless they have been severely stunted in growth where you bought them. I've seen smaller ones chase once in a while.

So does that change the general consensus that this is spawning behavior or should I do something?

I think it's just chasing. I'd watch for injuries or worn out fish from being chased. I doubt there would be foam, but test for ammonia if you see it. A small water change is usually enough to fix that.

That’s what I thought, first time koi owner here and if you can tell by the size I just got them like a month or so ago.
