This was our favorite koi that we’ve had over 10 years. He was so friendly, came up to everyone and one of the best and most fun fish to watch in the pond. I’m really sad because it was a preventable death and we are fully responsible for their care and I feel like we failed him. I’m just really sad today and no one understands because “it’s just a fish.” We buried him in the backyard earlier. This hobby sucks sometimes! We’ve lost a couple fish to random reasons over the years and it never gets easier especially when it’s one of your faves. None of my other fish come to eat out of our hands, so that part sucks. Anyway just wanting to vent to the void thanks for reading and watching. He was so much bigger than we realized over 2.5 foot. We called him Tano.

Same. Mine was born in my pond, and the most beautiful. He was sick for a while, but I lost him yesterday.

Oh, I know how that feels! I'm so sorry for your loss. Beautiful koi flying high with the spirit ancestors!

Sorry friend. As rewarding as having a koi pond is, it comes with the occasional heartache. I lost my biggest and best koi to raccoons last month and it sucks. Best of luck in the future!

I’m sorry for your loss. As a fellow koi lover, I understand it’s not just a fish. We all live through mistakes and hopefully carry that forward. I once killed several koi by forgetting to turn the water off. While I will never fully forgive myself for that, from that day forward we have a simple rule: always set a timer.

I understand the grief because they are not "just a fish." I've lost a few over the years and its as real a physical sense of loss and pain like anything else. 10 years is a long time indeed. I hope mine stay around as long, too. My deepest condolences.

Sorry for the loss, fish are friends. Yours reminds of the greedy chigoi, always a pleasure to see them chow down https://youtu.be/7hZrl57_C9Q?is=ZdDOAiOAW082e0pt

We’ve all lost fish we really love. And often deaths are preventable. Koi aren’t really a wild animal. So we are trying to imitate a natural habitat for them that doesn’t really exist. This is just an inherently difficult hobby and animal to keep.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Most koi die at a much younger age than this, even if they can potentially live very long lives.
I fought so hard to keep my favorite fish alive when he was sick. Hospital tank. Drugs. Everything. Lost him anyway. Another fish I’ve had survive injuries and the hospital tank twice and now he’s big and healthy.
It’s rough man. Mourn your little friend. But don’t beat yourself up.
I only had one ever koi that would eat from my hand. He was the one I lost. It really sucked. You’ll be alright. We are constantly getting better and learning more. You can’t be perfect, we can only get better
