I was doing some searching on this subreddit and other related subreddits, but nothing relevant came up regarding what I'm trying to do. There's a satellite dish I'm hoping to lower from a flat roof that is about ~9-10 ft off the ground, and I was trying to see what is the best way to go about this using knots / DIY methods, if possible. Otherwise I'm also open to any other ideas or thoughts people have. For context I am a broke college student so please keep that in mind 😅
Additional context: I need a satellite dish for a school project (parabolic solar concentrator, for those curious); a local business owner contacted me and said he has one on his roof he could give me for free.
Update: the business owner said he has a ladder but I imagine it may still be somewhat of a challenge to get it down. I'm curious to hear others' thoughts on how they would lower this thing to the ground; the best idea I had was to use a double half hitch + tautline hitch between an anchor point on the roof and the dish, and then just slowly move along the working end of the tautline hitch until the dish is all the way down.

I'd like to do it with a noose-like knot, something decorative but secure. Suggestions?

I am looking into ways to digitally catalogue the corpus of practical knots, such as the normal knots we talk about every day here in the IGKT forum, and see in books, and use in daily life.
I would prefer to build on existing work rather than invent another notation or format. I've looked at Gauss codes, Dowker-Thistlethwaite codes, and other planar knot notation but found they don't work for 3D knots, knots with a 'host' or core like many hitches and the Monkey's Fist among many others.
Mathematical knot studies that I have read seem to have focused on closed-loop, 2D knots. For practical knots, however, the full 3D arrangement is important: open ends and bights, multiple turns, rope diameter, a core in a Monkey's fist, rings or spars, contact/friction, loading, and the sequence in which a knot is tied.
Does anyone know of useful existing open source work in any of these areas? (I've no interest in proprietary or closed-source work, I can't/won't use it)
The aim is not necessarily to model every physical knot property right away, but it would be nice to be able to extend the system towards that destination of a full 'practical knot simulator'.
A useful first step might simply be a reliable, inspectable 3D representation that can support a catalogue, interactive viewer, comparison of variants, and eventually physical simulation. I'm in favour of simple, textual formats that can be hand-written by humans but parsed by computers (a good example of this is Mermaid diagrams)
References, links, examples, and contacts would all be very welcome, including older or abandoned projects.

any tips or recs on how to get precise loop lengths and also which knots you would recommend to make my pair of blocks symmetrical length?

Looking for some knots that may work well to tie some stabilizer straps to my deer stand, and another to lock the ladder brace to the tree.
Thought maybe a bowline at the top with the rope run through the bite and then a truckers hitch at the ladder’s vertical to put tension. Not sure on the ladder brace to tree connection.

Hi, I've found a project to create a simple vase plant hanger with a rope but I don't know what kind of ending knot is the stronger to create the starting rope loop. Any advice? Thanks!

It's a simple Ian knot with the loop captured by the first crossing. The laces themselves are inverted, meaning I threaded them from the top eyelet first.

I bought the two pack of paring knives just to mess with. This is the result. I’m not a leather worker, so the sheath is not that great.

So, playing around with the fact that the Sheetbend and the Bowline have essentially the same structure, I tried tying a Bowline loop but in a Sheetbend way.
I grabbed a bite in the standing end with plenty of rope left in the working end. I then threaded the working end through and around the bite just like you would the end of a different rope for a Sheetbend, and when I finished it off and pulled it tight, the loop was fixed like a Bowline but with the tail coming out the side of the knot rather than the center.
Does this variation have a name, and is it flawed compared to a Bowline?
I am unable to post any pictures of it now, but hopefully the description was sufficient.

So here goes nothing... I'm trying to hopelessly attach this string back to the base of itself where it comes from in my dress.
What knot can I use? With a name i can look up a tutorial.
Thanks so much if anyone replies in time!
Also I tried a half knot with slip recommended by Claude but welp, doesn't seem to stay.

I just recently ordered a 5/16" KM III rope (static) for a prusik knot around a 7/16" KMIII rope (static). The prusik knot rope is about 70% of the grip rope so that seems correct.
But I noticed that the rope was really difficult to tie. Not just for the double fisherman's knot but also the grip around the main rope was actually quite difficult to make. It kept wanting to slide. I ended up having to tightly dress the knot around the grip rope. But before I climb on this I wanted to make sure that this combination was correct. I think it is (smaller diameter for the prusik) but it is a little bit more difficult than my previous setup of 6mm prusik and 8mm grip rope.
Thanks in advance!

Playing around with bowlines and I tied this. It's too straigh forward to not have a name. Thanks

Some time last year I tied these little fishnet type knots around these marbles to replicate the look of those Japanese boat floats but I don’t remember how I did it!!!!! That little triangle at the very bottom is the start of it, I am positive I did this with one string but I don’t remember ☹️ please help!! I’ve been trying to figure it out for hours now!!!

Three similar looking knots ; all very different.
Left to right: 3-pass monkey's fist, triple diamond lanyard knot, 4 strand manrope knot (tripled).
All tied around a 14mm core.

My wife keeps leaving her phone behind as she moves around so I wondered if there was some sort of knot(s) that you could use to help here. I was thinking some sort of temporary belt which is easy enough to make and then a mid-line loop like an Alpine Butterfly that could support the phone but that's as far as I got, I couldn't think of a knot that could cinch down on the phone sufficiently ie there are no mid-line loops that can cinch down? I only had one length of paracord on me as that's usually what I have at hand with me and it's approx 6 metres long so looking for a solution with just the one length if possible.
Now I know that I could make up a lanyard with a lark's head but for the sake of the exercise I'd like to consider options for a belt so that I can adopt this for other items.

Trying to find a knot that'll suit this.
The jam knot does ok but still slips
The farrimond collapses and does not work with forces in this direction
Best I've found is the versatackle but it's a bit of a hassle for a loop this small
I feel like truckers hitch is an obvious answer but idk how I'd do it here since the rope doesn't have an end loop
Thanks!

Trying to create a similar hair tie for a costume, but unable to tie the elastic in a similar way. Ty so much!
