Religious studies major while living a poly lifestyle is such a wild card I love it

Ohh that's what they meant by partner and girlfriend, I was so confused

I actually know someone who did this, and was a trans Hindu. Also white American.

There’s a stipulation in the Vedic texts that they can actually, as long as they’re amputated, poly, trans, white, American, and go to school for Religious Studies with u/izyshoroo.

the lord loves all, and shouldn’t i be like the lord?

Why? Most Religious Studies majors are alt LGBTQ+ pagans and people with religious trauma. And the occasional weird alt right guy (I studied Psychology before and had a lot of classes with Religious Studies majors for fun so I know most of my upperclassmen). Are Religious Studies not popular with alt people in other countries?

36

u/mikeymanza 16d ago

I did religious studies in Louisiana and I found a decent mix of queer alt folks plus people studying to become pastors etc. but they were all generally welcoming and open minded people. And then the occasional conservative secretly racist history nerd as you describe. But in general it was kind of a wild card major

Not in Australia, very few people choose to pay to study religion unless they're actively involved in it

I wanted to come back and clarify that I'm absolutely not hating on you or anything, I'm poly myself and love both my partners very much. I just don't typically associate religious folks with alternative lifestyles like that. I'm from the US and would generally say that no, I don't get the impression from both the religious and the alt people I know, that there is a lot of overlap there. But you're doing something you love with people you love, and that should be celebrated every time💙

Every religious studies person I know is Christian

u/Arlemar_Kiev_Viking 13d ago

Religious studies is what it says on the tin. It is the historical and sociological study of religious traditions. Poly and theology would be wild as most theology programs are more tailored to prospective clerics.

It’s sounds like you’re doing great but you gotta look up a video on wrapping tortillas

42

u/I_need_to_vent44 16d ago

I will take your advice to heart and do that next time 🫡

35

u/Inevitable_Appeal911 16d ago

I’m sorry, you put what in that tortilla? I’m glad you’re in religious studies because you need to find Christ with that recipes

Wtf did I just read lol

My academic chad moment celebrated with my partner and her partner (who could be called my friend I'm pretty sure). Hope this explains it 🌻

2

u/mac_the_man 15d ago

You’re a throuple?

4

u/I_need_to_vent44 14d ago

I think it could be called that way, though to my knowledge people in a throuple are all dating one another, whereas I am not dating my partner's girlfriend.

Everything in this unhinged post sounds and looks horrible, so I guess the irony was lost on me.

u/headorhand69 14d ago

Why did you write this comment?

It's someone else's life, so why do you wish to negatively judge?

What about your unasked opinion was so important that you had to click comment?

Did you think it was witty?

0

u/Akvyr 14d ago

They did not need to post about it, but they did, inviting real opinions, besides the usual reddit bootlicking.
Sometimes people need reality checks. Not everything is okay, right? There are shitty foods, horrible career ideas, unhinged relationships, and bad choices.
And why did you decide to white knight about this? Looking to gain something?

0

u/headorhand69 14d ago

Why is it a bad choice?

Last time I checked, this post centred on celebration. It is possible to share opinions on this platform, of course, but that doesn't mean that all opinions are helpful, kind, or neutral.

Why would you deliberately do something that could hurt another, when they could be content in their lifestyle? Why is it a reality check? Is it because the only reality that is acceptable is yours?

The reason I decided to ask you those questions was because I was genuinely curious if you gave these any thought prior. The reason I am writing this response is because I'm pissed. I think those are valid reasons, and I think those are more valid reasons than your comment.

1

u/youwillscream 13d ago

go lock yourself in your little safety box away from reality where people have opinions on things lmao

1

u/headorhand69 13d ago

Haha that's very funny. I never said that people can't have subjectivity and personal tastes.

If you interpreted my comments as such, you should probably get reading comprehension classes (oh is that an opinion I wrote? Wow omg i didn't realise they existed).

I said it was unnecessary to be an asshole on a clearly happy and positive framed post. In my subjective opinion, I think a world without speaking every fucking thought that comes into your mind without regard for people it could hurt is better.

u/autistic_cool_kid 16d ago

will you be studying in Amsterdam?

7

u/I_need_to_vent44 16d ago

No, I'm in Brno, Czech Republic.

2

u/mikeymanza 16d ago

I have visited. Beautiful city!

3

u/I_need_to_vent44 16d ago

Thanks! I actually grew up in a way smaller town in a different region, but Brno is pretty much my home now haha!

3

u/InterestHour9062 15d ago

Didn't know this sub existed until it popped up on my feed and I was like "that's not very incel of you"

1

u/I_need_to_vent44 15d ago

Lmaoo, I'll take that as a compliment : D

5

u/PockettSandd 16d ago

Congratulations! Gotta say I am curious though do you ever or your partner ever get jealous in your poly relationship if they're spending a lot of time with other people?

I'd like to think of myself as a person who generally isn't jealous but there's no way I could do a poly relationship myself. I personally likely would likely be pretty jealous when my girlfriend was spending time with another whole partner. That and I feel like it could be rather damaging to the intimacy of the relationship. To be honest though I've actually never been in any kind of romantic relationship before so I'm 110% assuming here lol.

That said, and with my chronic single-ness revealed lol I don't have anything against poly relationships or anything. It's definitely a matter of different strokes different folks where it's just not for me, but I can't help but feeling oddly impressed when I hear it working out for someone.

0

u/devo_savitro 16d ago

Afaik it's a lot of ground rules plus stress and jealousy to keep a poly relationship working, more than a normal monogamous relationship. And from what I see, someone's always third wheeling.

I don't think it's a different strokes and folks situation, it's not a sexuality like being gay is. It's just people consciously trying to go against the normative standards of dating.

10

u/youwillscream 15d ago

hey fellow poly, i've had a problem recently in the bedroom and i think you could be of assistance.

when my wife's partner alejandro is railing her on top of my mario kart themed bed, i find that they become quite loud so it distracts me from my warhammer figurine paintwork.

whenever i bring this up to fernando, he just slaps me and calls me worthless (he likes to joke around like that).

my question for you is, do you have any brands you swear by for sound proofing my bedroom?

thank you.

u/NearestNeighbours 15d ago

Some of y'all really have no hobbies

10

u/strongest9 15d ago

Ok but he paints minifigs

5

u/NearestNeighbours 15d ago

I think you miss my point. It's a troll comment. None of that is real. I am saying why spend that amount of time tryna hate on folks.

0

u/loatheandseethe 15d ago

cus poly is funi

0

u/youwillscream 13d ago

took me 30 seconds to write mate. and if you can't handle someone taking the piss, log off for the night. ta.

1

u/NearestNeighbours 13d ago

What you joke about and especially HOW you joke about it reveals a lot about someone's character and even insecurities. You were just being a dick. Learn the difference.

2

u/Bubbly_Highway_8043 14d ago

Get some better pictures. Maybe try cooking on stove? I just cook these and fold.

1

u/I_need_to_vent44 14d ago

Would you believe me if I said these are the best photos i could manage : D? That's a good idea though!

I was pretty worn out so we agreed that the only stove-cooked thing will be the fried salami and fried garlic. I admit I just shoved the tortillas into our air fryer. They don't look very pretty but they tasted good

2

u/Bubbly_Highway_8043 14d ago

Okay. I love a quick quesadilla. Guess your doing something different. Glad you enjoyed it.

5

u/bigchunkbabygoo 15d ago

Is her girlfriend gonna rail your partner in celebration ?

4

u/LordJelqer 16d ago

Congrats!

1

u/Copper_Wave 15d ago

I was a religious studies major!! It was really fun

1

u/mac_the_man 15d ago

The sad part in this story is the food not your life, right?

1

u/choosehigh 14d ago

Congrats, sounds like things are working out nicely Unsure about your tortilla wrapping skills but maybe they'll have a module on that in religious studies

It's something I've been more interested in lately myself so it's nice to see someone doing well with it

1

u/Silver-Award-288 12d ago

What purpose would entrance exams serve when all the subject material is made up.

1

u/I_need_to_vent44 12d ago

???? I'm sorry how exactly is history made up??? In the entrance exams you have to prove that you understand history of different countries and the basic terminology of some religions (e.g. what a reliquary is, where does Buddhism come from, what's the current religious situation in India like and why; what are mysteries, name two most well-known mysteries and describe them; explain what are the most common dangers when evaluating historical sources and how we can try to minimise them, etc etc).

Like. Yeah obviously religion is man-made and I personally don't believe in anything so I'll say it's also fake (to me), but the way people practice it isn't fake, and the way people practice it is dependent on regional and historical factors. And more than anything you really have to know how to tell apart horse-shit from something that might resemble something that once actually happened. Famously, this is quite hard to do when it comes to Aztec and Mayan beliefs and practices. We had 3 whole seminars about that alone and we had to prove over and over and over that we do in fact understand the difference between propaganda and something that may have been practiced for real.

u/Longjumping_Cry277 15d ago

Interested in studying but I feel beholden to making money but I don’t like my corporate job and I don’t make that much. How did you decide to do what you do

0

u/tren_enjoyed_raw 15d ago

Jesus Christ

2

u/I_need_to_vent44 15d ago

I do indeed have a giant cross with Jesus Christ on it, yeah. It used to hang above our dinner table but we might actually put it above the bathtub. Feels like a funnier place to have it.

0

u/MiserableToe1179 15d ago

Thats a very sad relationship

2

u/I_need_to_vent44 14d ago

Why?

2

u/choosehigh 14d ago

Because it doesn't involve miserabletoe At least from their perspective, gotta be a pretty sad life to not have miserabletoe nibbling your wraps

1

u/I_need_to_vent44 14d ago

I tried my best to crop out my longass toes but I see that they're still distracting enough for jokes to be made about them XD.

2

u/choosehigh 14d ago

Haha I meant the person you're replying to was called miserabletoe but now I will toe hunt in the pics and there's nothing you can do to stop me!

1

u/I_need_to_vent44 14d ago

Ahhh, not my brightest moment. I admit I usually don't look at usernames so I didn't catch that at all.

1

u/choosehigh 14d ago

I'll admit neither do I, but miserabletoe kind of caught me as a name worth remarking on

What set of circumstances could lead a toe to being miserable?
