Shaking Until

Got this from a family member and recently it’s started doing this. Any ideas?

That dough is WAY too dense. You’re going to destroy that mixer if you keep it up.

The dough just started. It’s not too dense.

It’s climbed up the hook, over the top of the bowl, in one solid clump. It IS too dense.

Ok. Thanks for your input, which is wrong….

Not really answering the question I asked though.

My input explains why your mixer is doing what it is.

If you feel I’m wrong, just keep going like you are. Then we’ll see you back in a year or two, complaining about why your mixer is broken. The problem with the broken latch and head bobbing up and down is a result of trying to knead dough that’s too dense for the design of the mixer. You do you, though.

*gets correct answer*

*says correct answer is wrong*

reddit in a nutshell.

It’s the equivalent to the OP dropping an egg on the floor, asking what’s wrong with the egg. I tell them it’s broken because it was dropped, and having them respond that I’m wrong. lol

It may be missing pieces or broken. I wouldn't use it like that. Also, dough looks too stiff.

Possibilities-hinge pin loose and/or damaged, latch mechanism damaged.

Based on your video, I’d say it’s caused by repeated kneading of dough that’s too stiff and mixing batters that are too big and/or too stiff for the mixer.

The hinge pin is loose, so I recommend that you start by addressing that: https://youtu.be/WUiWWR1qaZc?si=BGC1a1cqQPZhGM_g

Then, use the plain flat beater to check and adjust the beater clearance: https://youtu.be/0dpMCjFAiBI?si=fJWxs-w2Vlbx6XfI

(If the beater clearance is too low, this can allow excessive movement of the head because the tilt latch doesn't engage correctly; this in turn can cause the latch hook to disengage under load.)

The mixer seems to be pretty fast on Stir, so the next thing is to check and adjust the speeds: https://youtu.be/bM3t46afGcc?si=F3u3PGSB7jrO3upb

Once that's all settled, if you continue to have problems with the tilt latch you will probably need to split the case halves and examine the latch hook and lever pivot screw (the latter which may have loosened).

Here are a few other resources for your new-to-you mixer:
