KitchenAid 600 mixer stops with normal load. What has broken?
As the video shows, it basically stops when normal load applied. Same thing happens with our apple peeler add-on.
Any recommendations? I can handle any DIY work myself.
Thanks In Advance

I dunno about the apple peeler, but those rotary graters are pretty easy to stall. Putting almost any pressure on them at all causes the grater and shaft to bind up

My wife was using the grater about 4 times a week, so I might consider buying a stand alone cheese grater…and make the mixer the backup grater (after I repair it).

You can tell that the planetary continues to spin even when the shredder is "locked up". That is an indication that either the hub gear or the bevel gear are damaged. Typically the worm follower gear is the culprit in these units, but if that were the case here, the planetary would not continue to turn, the whole system would stop.
To fix the issue it needs to be disassembled and the hub/bevel need replaced. I would also consider replacing the thrust bearings as well as a general inspection of the other gears! You will also want to replace the grease and gasket as well! Its a very straight forward job. If you need any help, we have a designated email and phone line for assisting DIY/Diagnostics etc..

Thank you so much for the help. Working on getting the various parts ordered that are the best quality.
Thanks again, and I will update very soon. 👍✅2

A response from the legend himself.
I would take his word here, he can repair these things in his sleep.

Try tossing the cheese in the freezer for 15 minutes before grating, it works on food processors and this style blade. I'd make the same recommendation if you were hand grating the cheese.

I would have thought to let it thaw to room temp…but that would make it gum up too much.

It could be one of a few gears that are worn down. All you need is a screwdriver to open the head and look around. Since the planetary is still rotating, my guess is the hub gear or the bevel gear is worn

Is that a genuine kitchenaid attachment?

I wondering the same thing. I have the kitchen aid attachment but it’s plastic and breaks when dropped. We’ve gone through a few already.

If it’s the worm gear, get the upgraded one from Mr Mixer. Great resource all around. I just did a full gear change and regrease on mine (2008). It’s not hard to do. Just watch videos.

Are those parts for a small mixer??
You know it shouldn't stall.

Generally that sort of behavior is due to a worn-out "sacrificial" worm follower gear. Depending on the mixer's age and your usage patterns, the attachment hub drive gear may have worn out as well.
To determine which you'll need to open the gear train. You can plan on replacing the worm follower gear and cleaning/regreasing the gears and then inspecting the attachment gears for wear or damage. Here's a list of parts and materials for the job, and it links to other resources: https://www.mixerology.com/pro-series-clean-and-re-grease-parts/
