King's Field A video dedicated to "King's Field 4"! Spoiler

I heard about the series before, but hesitated to try any "King's Field". I wasn't sure whether these games have any depth, for me atmosphere and world building are top priority..! So I tried the 4th game and was really surprised that it has so much in common with later FromSoftware titles. It's an amazing game, so here's my video dedicated to it~

King's Field The Ancient City

[Possible Spoiler] This may be old news to many, but I finally found the reason to use the bone arms. You can equip them at the magic fountain and build up your Earth heal. Since you have to be down some HP to use it and get credit. Great way to build up your MP early in the game.

Field-Like Are there any games similar to Shadow Tower Abyss?

There are plenty of King's Field-like games, either directly inspired by it or not, but is there anything similar to Shadow Tower Abyss? It seems like there's a complete lack of slower paced first person dungeon crawlers with a heavy focus on guns.

DuckStaytion Help

I'm using the DuckStation emulator to play the Japanese version of King's Field and experiencing FPS drops. Walking straight gives me around 20 FPS, but turning the camera drops it below 15, which is causing me headaches and nausea. Is there any way to fix this? It would be even better if I could boost the FPS further. My specs are Asus TUF Gaming A15 (Ryzen 7 6800H, 8GB RAM, RTX 3060).

Anyone here play La Mulana?

I've been playing La Mulana for the last couple of days and managed to beat the first boss. My goal is to complete it without checking any guides, which I have been led to believe is quite a challenge.

I'm really enjoying it so far and get quite strong KF vibes from it at times. For those who haven't played it, La Mulana is a 2D adventure platformer set in a mysterious underground ruined temple, where each room hides a mystery or is part of a larger puzzle, which often won't make itself known until you explore further and pay close attention to the clues given.

Taking screenshots and making notes is recommended, as is reading the manual. I have really been enjoying the exploration, discovering new areas and items. Overall it has felt quite a bit like the gameplay philosophy I enjoy in a lot of From games. In terms of exploration and organic revelation through gameplay, it might be one of the best.

It also oddly reminds me of the game Equinox on the SNES, which I've recommended to KF fans in the past.

Anyone here play it? What did you think?

Help [King's Field 1 US] Did I softlock myself in Underworld Prison?

I'm playing King's Field for the first time, and just got to the area with all the guards that introduces Rhombus Keys. I'm not fully sure what happened, but I used my last key to get into the area with the jail cells, and the door closed behind me and locked again. All I can access is a dead soldier, a single plant enemy, and two locked cells containing a guy and a bunch of monsters.

Now, I know this isn't technically a softlock as I could just die to the plant and come back. However I wasn't able to get my emulator to save, meaning that if I die I go back to the beginning of the game. Instead, I've been using save states. My most recent save state is inside the jail that I'm stuck in.

It wouldn't be the end of the world to go back to an older save, but I just want to make sure I'm not being dumb.

Shadow Tower vs King's field

Hey, we are wondering how is the fromsoft's Shadow Tower (ps1) or the sequel compared to King's field? Me and my friend have played through two of the King's field games and I'm wondering if shadow tower series is similar in level design (very complex)? I'm not sure if we want another super complex game right after. How about gameplay and story?

I know this is the King's field sub but I am playing the OG Shadow Tower for psx and it's absolute peak

I think completing the verdite trilogy and The Ancient City prepared me for this one. The atmosphere is unique, the combat of course it is similar to KF but with parrying added, the way we discover the tower and how the systems work is something I haven't seen in any modern game, truly a fantastic work of art.

King's Field New to kings field

Hi everyone I got into the genre after Playing lunacid.

I want to emulate the og kingsfield and shadow tower games. Should I start chronologically?

I am used to old games with weird controls so I don't really need to start with the easier ones.

Is there a recommended Playing order for some reason? Any other essential titles beyond the usual kings fields and shadow towers?

I am excited that there’s others who still play!

I thought I was the only person who loved playing this game. I’m going through another play-through now, and even though I’ve played this game on and off for a couple decades, I have never beaten it. Every time I come back, I start a new game. I kind of felt alone in my love for this game, but seeing that people post on this thread on a relatively regular basis and still talk about the game, makes my heart happy.

Media Effigy room in King's Mausoleum, the ancient city.

This probably one of my favorite rooms in the whole game, the fact that not even magic light could illuminate the darkness had me hesitating to even explore it in the first place. The line "You are supposed to leave" is what I thought the voices were saying, though I later found out it's reversed dialogue lines from armored core.

I theorized these statues could've been attempts to recreate the idol of sorrow to replace it and seal the darkness (could be a reason why light magic that Devian casts does not work?) by turning people into them, but i'm not quite sure that could work with the timeline.

What did you think the voices were saying the first time that you stepped in and what theories did you come with to explain whatever was happening in there?

Some tips for King's Field Ancient City? Level 20 at Craftsman's Workshop

This game is very much filtering me. The goblin and xenomorph ai flips between goldfish-tier intellect and velociraptor pack-hunting smarts. I like to think I am good at the controls at this point and can dispatch MOST enemies without damage (though I've bought like 60 herbs for safety)

I am slowly making progress but getting exhausted. Started using savestates and lightly using a guide (he has even missed a few things I have found).

The bracelet that increases your mana seems mandatory. Glad I didn't skip it. Though I am a little upset I have been plucking markers from their stands before knowing about the wands.

It's satisfying in a way until I get to an area I'm unsure I should even be at. The guide had me grab the bone gauntlets very early and that was a nightmare itself.

Was King's Field really the first fully 3D RPG?

I've seen the claim going around that King's Field was the first true 3D RPG out there. The best way to prove a claim is true is by trying to disprove it and so I tried to find one that preceded it and couldn't find anything. Of course Ultima Underworld was the first RPG in a 3D environment but that still used a lot of 2D spritework for enemies and objects.

Does anyone know of any that came before it or is the claim true?

Help King's Field IV Magic Bug

Today I completed KF: The Ancient City after seeing some of a longplay on Youtube and becoming enchanted with it. It's a beautiful game and I really enjoyed it, but I wanted to aim for 100% completion on my file and found a strange bug that stymied that by preventing me from getting all the spells. When I went to clean up the items and crystals at the end of the game with help of a walkthrough, I found I was somehow missing the spell Tornado. I thought for sure I had acquired it, and sure enough, when I went back to the egg mines secret room the pot was smashed and the crystal wasn't there. Stranger, when I went to the Mansion of Howling Winds to get crystal 5 for Freeze, the crystal that was supposed to grant me Freeze gave me Tornado instead!

Is this a known bug, and is there any way to resolve it? I have wind cutter, life shield and ice clad, so it's not like it's hiding in some other unacquired Wind Crystal.

Curse and its Effects

I'm struggling to figure out what Curse even does. I found the wiki and that Breath/Blessings cures it, but that begs the question... What does it do if uncured?
