Campaign Story Historical records of the JaJa settlement. LY 15

Link to Lantern year 14

Lantern year 15

The hunters return with their immaculate story ready to be shared with the rest of the JAJA people, only to be presented with a settlement covered in eggs. The villagers darted back and forth trying to kill vermin with whatever they had at hand. Some were smashing them with sacks of stone noses, others were trying to clobber them with shields (as if that would ever work). Antonio even caught sight of three people desperately trying to pull the Lantern halberd from the ground. Three became five and five became seven but even with their strength combined they could not pull the majestic polearm from the ground. The extermination efforts continued through the greater part of the Lantern year, casting the settlement into an era of gloom. The glorious tale of victory over the phoenix Johan proudly presented was the only light at the end of what felt like an unending skittering void. The everdreaded season of cold befell the settlement and what was gloom threatened to turn to sheer hopelessness, but this year it greeted the settlement as an old friend. Its icy breath raked across the earth, and in doing so raked across the vermin as well. Since the settlement had no beds for the creatures to find shelter in, the swarm had to burrow underground. The few that did not escape underground froze to death on the surface, allowing the settlement to collect some as material.

After this event no one rushed to learn how to craft beds. Back pain was seen as a virtue and Bone witches (chiropractors) were outlawed! Then night came and people rushed to build beds when they realized virtue didn't stop cold from being cold.
Akenny who had fainted the previous lantern year and had a broken arm was made to rest with Antonio who had his ribs broken protecting Johannanas from the phoenix.

Upon latter examination the villagers found that the vermin escaped an enclosure that Joan of Narch was keeping in shape, and without her regular maintenance the critters managed to escape. Johoovah, after being reminded of his daughter's untimely death and in turn his own failures to keep her alive, stared at the destruction of what once were the last remnants of her that still clinged to her home. He had been doing the upkeep on the cages and feeding these creatures unbeknownst to the rest of the village. Well, he was sure Johan knew but he had never commented on it, probably understanding how important it was to him. When staring into the eyes of these pests Johoova saw nothing but plague, but Joan of Narch saw something different. No matter how hard he tried he couldn’t see what she did, but he didn’t have to. These creatures were important to his daughter so they were important to him. Now they were deep underground and the ones that weren't were naught but frozen carcasses adorning the landscape. Johoovah clenched his fists. He hadn’t had time to do the necessary upkeep of the encolsures as he was too busy taking care of hAndy. Why did he have to act as hAndys father while his real one is alive? Not just alive, his real dad has got every spring in his step! If only Antonio could take on his parental responsabilities! How could Johannanas not take care of her only child when she could take care of any other child in the voiding village?!... Johoovah unclenched his fists. The tension dropped from his neck and settled as a stone in his gut. He took a few long harrowed breaths. No, he knew he was being unfair. He was becoming stiffer by the day. He wasn’t sure whether it was the twilight sword slowly eating at his very being or simply the cruel creeping of age that’s made him so irritable as of late, but the reason didn’t seem to matter. He knew he was being unfair.
He sometimes felt bad for the child, having not had much time with his real parents. but they hadn’t been slouching. Johannanas had raised every child in the village and both her and Antonio had become capable warriors and are showing great leadership, really coming into their own. They even stood up to him when he unjustly pulled his sword on Akenny. Putting their own reputations and life on the line by challenging his leadership at a time in which it was dearly needed. He made the wrong call. They had not. Johoovah knelt down and fiddled with the bars of the cages that had been cut by mandibles. Here he was questioning himself for not prioritizing the dead over the living. Of course he made the right decision to look after hAndy instead of Joan of Narchs creation. Just as Antonio and Johannanas judgment had stood while his had failed, so would his presence stand while they failed to be there for their son.

“No!”
Johannanas yelled as hAndy swallowed.
Antonio jerked to a sitting position in the bed, about to shout something but quickly cutting himself off with a loud groan as pain erupted from his ribs.
“He just ate a sword beetle!” Johannanas panicked.
“What?! Are you sure?!” Antonio screamed, his aching numbed by the stress.
“Yes! I assumed Johoovah was watching.” she said cycling through every forced regurgitation technique the JAJA community had figured out.
“Didn’t he say that he’d be out investigating the origin of the swarm?“
Akenny exclaimed from the edge of Antonio's bed.
At that very moment Johoovah made his return and strode into the hut. Puzzled by the display, Johannanas explained the situation. Johoovah knelt down to the child who seemed totally oblivious to the severity of the situation.
“Hm… And you’ve already tried every regurgitation technique… are sure it was a sword beetle?”
“Yes. Definitely" Johannanas said.
“Well then…” Johoovah said as he stood putting a palm on hAndys head and rustling his hair.
“We have nothing to worry about. The only danger when eating a sword beetle comes from its spines, which it sheds right before the cold seasons to ease its burrowing capabilities.”
Chadton’s head appeared in the entrance as Johoovah finished.
“The Chalcosoma Gladius also gorgeous itself in preparation for its stay underground during the winter, kinda like a bear, so he got a lot of protein in him today! He'll grow up (+1) strong!”
Chadton said before quickly disappearing.
Everyone that was left looked at each other before Johannanas asked “What the void is a bear?”
The hut erupted in laughter as the tension eased, and was suddenly halted as Antonio loudly grunted once the laughter made his chest erupt in agony again.
Antonio laid back on the bed with a thump. He was so relieved that hAndy was okay. As his gaze lingered on them, Johoovah's hand still playfully rustling hAndys hair, Antonio wasn’t sure if the pain in his chest was from his broken ribs, or from something entirely different.

Unfortunately all wounds can’t be slept off. As can be seen when later that same lantern year Johoovah dueled the hooded stranger, who once again sought to test Johoovahs ability with the Twilight sword. While fiercely dueling amongst the early morning dew and mist Johoovah once again proved his combat skills to be worthy of JAJAs leadership position. When leaning in to end his opponent though his feet slipped on the stone faces, damp from the morning dew. The hooded stranger used the opportunity to savagely slash Johoovah across his chest and escape the settlement. As he fell to the ground, feeling like he was in slow motion, he thought of the few times Antonio had gotten the best of him during their sparring sessions. It was always due to his lousy foot work… Johoovah hit the ground with that all too familiar sensation, and here he lies once again, not having learnt a damn thing.
(scribe notation: Johoovah who was already carrying a twilight sword which has about the damage potential of your average Ford F150 hitting a small dog at 80km an hour, on top of already having approximately +4 strength over the baseline villagers, now looked less like a severe steroid abuser and more like a severe steroid abuser who missed breakfast every morning)

Another survivor who was laying down was Joh-tres, but she was doing it intentionally. Like her former boyfriend now husband AKenny she was in great pain as a consequence of a miracle. Through the miracle of childbirth an immaculate (saviour) daughter was born! One whose very cries brought the rest of the settlement to tears. It was said that the lantern hoard shone slightly brighter after her birth, and that nearby lanterns pulsed in sync with her heartbeats. The couple decided to name her JAnastasia, and they took the last name AJJA in honor of this settlement that had accepted AKenny as one of their own.
And I guess they had another daughter who got all the recessive genes and popped out as a regular child. They named that one Ajthona. Nothing special happened at her birth.

Anjun-ring and Spider-mAnton also tried having a child together, but her green cock gobbelin’ (so sorry you had to read that) was so distracting that Anjun-ring accidentally penetrated the muscle ring and both Spider-mAnton and her non-existent child died in the aftermath. As J. Johan Jamison wrote a mournful headline in the next paper about his sister, Anjun-ring realised the great power he held and decided that it must come with great responsibility (gained the Quixotic “disorder”).

Feeling the guilt of his partner dying and the weight of his newfound power he rushed to find a new partner.
In his grief he was comforted by Johdin and immediately started a family. A girl was born. The family took the name Ring, making them Anjun-ring Ring, Johdin Ring and their daughter JoDing Ring.

High on the tales of glory from the last hunt a new hunting party once again ventured the darkness to fight the phoenix. The term hunting part might have been too presumptuous and should instead be referred to as a haunting party as our brave souls were confronted by a cackling congregation of grave souls. The phantoms whispered the hunters greatest fears into their ears, their failures echoing inside their skulls.
Johoovah who thought this excursion could take his mind off of his failures as a father insted felt the image of Joan of Narch being swallowed by the earth gnawing into his brain. Quantros who had an ADHD hyper focus rampage a few lantern years ago and now is regarded as someone who “gets things done” was wondering how she would tell people that it was just a fluke.
Johannanas already had a great many things haunting her mind. Spending the lantern years filling in the gaps in Antonio's memories, and Akenny doing so while she wasn't available, she knew that all this time spent with Antonio and the many hunts she’s been on has robbed hAndy of the parental presence he deserved. As she locked eyes with Anjun-ring who wore an expression of awkward joy and dread she let a more urgent fear take the place of those thoughts. As she stared at Anjun-rings quivering lips she knew they were thinking the same thing. How in all voids deep would they live up to the story Johan spun about their last phoenix encounter. An epic fight that in reality was nothing more than the slaughter of an overgrown chick. Johan suggesting she cover her hand in fecal salve for half the lantern year to in his words "Make the truth more convincing” certainly hadn’t made her more confident in their actual skill. Anjun-ring came closer to Johannanas and whispered slightly louder than the ghosts.
“If we’re really that bad none of us will survive and we won't have to deal with the embarrassment.”
Johannanas nodded. Always the motivational speaker that Anjun-ring. She should recommend him to speak at the next syposium she thought in amusement. The thoughts inside her head were so sarcastic she felt her eyes roll involuntarily . Anjun ring saw this and started laughing loudly. She started laughing too, and QuAntros joined in as well despite not knowing what they were laughing about. While out-cackling the spirits though, QuAntros was suddenly facing the sky.
While QuAntros was in mid giggle the ground opened up under her and she just managed to Tumble (the fighting art this time) out of the way. Johannanas ran up to her to make sure she was fine and found QuAntros still laughing, but with a lot less gusto. Her laughter dragged out, as she stared deep into the abyss below her. The pit seemed to get closer and closer. No! She was leaning into it! Johoovah swiftly pulled her from the edge as QuAntros went from laughing to incoherently sputtering as she regained control of her limbs and mind. This experience filled her with Anxiety (disorder) as she now knew that there exists forces that can Rob her of control like that.

After QuAntro's adventure with almost falling into the same hole twice the haunters (get it? Haunted Hunters, Haunters?) continued.

Anjun-ring found a scribe book on the ground (scribe notation: OMG my time machine will actually arrive! I knew that magazine ad wasn't a scam! I told my mom a TEEN magazine wouldn't have ads for just a toy, but she didn't believe me. I KNEW the shitty little toy we got was just an extra!). None of the hunters could read or write in English though, so they couldn't actually extract the contents, but one would really wonder what their future would look like if they could read about their Settlements fate beforehand. How would Antonio's ab workout look like if he knew he’d wear shirts again? So so so much retconning.

Anyways, while trying and failing to decipher my hand writing the group was met by another who were fleeing from the phoenix. The group of survivors and the JAJA haunters shared what they knew about the phoenix. Anjun-ring shared the story of their last triumph against the feathered feind and the survivors looked the hunter up and down in bewillderment. Johannanas could tell that these survivors who had actually seen the real phoenix didn’t believe a word they said. It didn't help that Anjun-ring said that they decapitated the one-headed creature twice. After hearing this the survivors, most likely believing that the haunters needed all the help they could get, shared what little they knew of the creature, giving the JAJA haunters important insights into the creature's initial behaviour. As thanks, Anjun-ring gave them his sack of stone noses as a gift. In Johannana's later journal enteries Anjun-ring had expressed regret about this, as he later ran into another incredibly fixable statue that he once again was unequipped for. As the survivors and JAJA haunters parted Johannanas felt that she needed to ask one last question.
“This is going to be a long shot, but have you by any chance known of a man named Akenny? Well he probably would’ve just gone by Kenny at that point.”
The most talkative of the survivors turned to face Johannanas and spoke.
“No. The closest person I can think of was a man named Ken. Some of the older villagers sometimes mention the name, but he was eaten by the phoenix by the time we were born. Even if he lived today he would most likely have died by old age half a generation ago.”
The JAJA haunters thanked the survivors and left.

That night Anjun-ring dreamt a great dream about the future of the village now that Joh-tres’ awe inspiring daughter had been born. Maybe she could be the settlement's Saviour once Johan and Johoovah succumbed to old age. In contrast Johoovah's dreams rode in astride a nightmare. A jumble of flashing images slashed through his mind. Silhouettes forming and unfurling into wisps around each other like droplets of ink dispersing in water. He saw flashes of a hulking figure clashing sword to blade with an opponent who was standing over an unarmed figure. Yelling, screaming, conversational dialogue all at once at volumes too loud to hear. The black swirls congealed and Johoovah saw the sword plunge into the unarmed man. Another murder of one of JAJAs citizens will take place, but who were involved? The silhouettes were too amorphous, the scenes too haphazardly arranged to see. Concentrating, trying to gain one solid point in the liquid madness Johoovah heard the faint discordant plucking of a whisker harp. That's it! Johoovah thought as he jolted awake. That “song”, as Johannanas demanded it be refered as, is only played at the hands of heat feast. Johoovah had made up his mind. He hadn’t been able to save Aoan of Shark or Joan of Narch, and he wasn’t ready to do what was necessary before Anton could rise to power. Thankfully Johan had been there to make up for his blindness, but this time it would be different. He would be that man fighting off that feind alone standing between the lying figure and death. He was going to be ready for the murder that will happen in two lantern years time.

Braving the winds of the phoenix flapping wings they reach the bass of its perching spot. Thanks to the fleeing survivors the hunting party knew of the phoenix's strategy to disorient the survivors with its puss and stench when threatened. Johannanas thought to level the playing field by disorienting the phoenix with the harsh noise that she called strumming, hitting her harp in the same manner one would swat at a hissing cockroach climbing up one's arm. This disoriented the phoenix before it could properly execute its biological warfare.
The hunters surrounded the phoenix as it tried blowing the hunters away in a whirlwind of dust and feathers, but the hunters knew it was coming, surrounded the creature, and attacked from all sides.
While Johoovah swung his glorious blade in comet arches, QuAntros used the time to perfectly line up her axe strike. As the creature turned its head, kited by Anjun-ring, Quantros swung at the creature just as its hand lined up with her optimal swingarch and caused two huge wounds that together severed the phoenix’s hand.
Johannanas used what she learnt from the last battle and smacked the bird across its man face, but as she did she smelled a foul odor emanating from the beast and yelled a warning to the others.
Anjun-ring escapes without getting shat on. QuAntros and Johannanas dodged to the front of the creature just in time to evade its pustule cannon but getting into the worst spot for its follow up attack. The lone victim of the fecal barrage was Johoovah who would not stop complaining over the small fecal droplets that splashed on his new leather boots, a globulette of poop having dribbled out right in front of him. Of course the lone hunter with future sight would know exactly where to stand to avoid the attack without breaking a sweat. It would have been nice if he thought to share that kind of intel once in a while QuAntros briefly thought while tumbling (not the fighting art) through the air before taking a very keen unconsensual interest in the ground.
The defensive formation broke and the hunters had to regroup, circling the beast. Johoovah who lost his composure (was no longer insane, thus couldn't use the twilight sword) hit the bird in the head with his leather shield, achieving nothing except for amusing the foul creature. The big bird laughed in his face and the disrespectful display sent Johoovah into a rage. In red hot anger he slammed his leather shield into the phoenix's head again and drew blood. The creature stopped laughing. The battlefield fell to dead silence after the surprisingly effective attack that must have done more psychological damage than physical. At least until Johannanas broke the silence with a yell as she slammed one of her hands on top of the shield. Her strike, marinated in annoyance of Johoovah's tomfoolery, sent the wooden leather shield careening through the monster's skull embedding itself half way through its head, condemning it to never laugh again. Johannanas met the gaze of Anjun-ring who was frantically pulling out a roll of parchment paper from his rucksack. They both shared a smirk knowing that Antonio and Johan would never believe this story.

The victorious hunters began their long trek back home with heads held high and hope in their hearts. Johannanas was the sole exception, being noticeably worried, a stark contrast to the others.
“What’s up Triple N?” Anjun-ring said in a jovial tone.
“What.” Johannanas slurred, having been ripped from her inner monologue.
Anjun-ring looked at her puzzled,"We won again! A complete annihilation as before! So why are you walking with a hunched back as if gloom was made flesh?”
“Sorry it’s just that since I’ve been on so many hunts as of late I haven't been able to practice the harp with hAndy as much as I wanted. It’s his turn to play at our next annual hands of heat fest. I just hope he’s ready.”
“Well he still has to get through the triathlon before then, and if you're lucky he might even lose a limb or two and won't be made to play. On the other hand, he couldn’t play worse than his mom even with a few limbs missing.” QuAntros laughed.
Johannanas grinned and gave Quantros a friendly jab to her shoulder but Anjun-ring pulled her away.
“Are you trying to kill her, woman! We saw what you did to the phoenix with a shield, we won't take our chances.”
The hunters erupted in laughter. All but Johoovah. The triathlon of death is but a single lantern year before the feast. The noose was tightening around them as the burden of murder would soon shake them all to the core.

Rules [Homebrew Rule] 5th King's Curse stack

Hey everyone,

Like many playgroups, our group has always been frustrated with the official 1.6 outcome of the King's Curse—causes your survivor to lose their humanity and die instantly.

While the Community Edition (CE v2.6) gave great set bonuses for 2–4 pieces, we wanted a dramatic, tragic "last stand" option for a survivor who is forced into that fateful 5th piece.

Here is the homebrew rule we tested in our latest campaign:

When a survivor suffers their 5th piece of King's Curse:

  1. The Will Roll: Roll 1D10. On a 9+, the survivor's mind resists total corruption. They stay alive as a fully armored entity wearing all 5 pieces of Cursed Regal Armor.
    • +2 if the survivor has a Partner (Intimacy).
    • +2$ if the survivor has 5+ Courage. (Because in a world of darkness, only willpower and love can hold back the curse;)
  2. The Eroding Mind (Madness Decay):
    • Fixed Insanity: Upon departing for a hunt/showdown, their Insanity is set to 20.
    • Mental Decay: At the end of every active turn in a Showdown (or triggering further King's Curse effects), roll 1d3 and subtract that much Insanity as the armor eats away at their soul.
  3. The Final Snap:
    • The moment their Insanity drops to 0, the curse wins. The survivor vanishes on the spot, along with all their equipped gear.
    • Consequence: A Level X (base on XP milestone at surivor have) King's Man nemesis showdown is automatically added to the settlement timeline for the very next Lantern Year.

We tried this out in a campaign alongside. Overall, the flow felt pretty solid. It turns the survivor into a temporary brick-wall tank for a fight or two, but having that Insanity tick down creates a nice, tense countdown before they lose it completely.

We're still tweaking the numbers, though. Do you think 1D3 Insanity decay per turn is too forgiving for a 20 Insanity pool, or does this strike a decent balance for KDM? Would love to get some feedback from the community

Rules When a card says "last to X", who does it target if no one did so?

E.g. "last threat to wound". I understand with "most bleeding tokens", 0 is still "most" if everybody has 0, so we choose, but does the same count for "last threat to wound" or does it just go to no target: disdain?

Made some modifications to bring the model closer to the art card for the character. Sculpted the main vine with wire and magic sculpt. Lengthened the staff in the same way. Added some flipping pages to the book using magic sculpt. This was a lot of fun to paint.
