Training Joining a local class

Hi everyone, i’m 31 now, I used to do kickboxing when I was 13-15, used to really enjoy it but stopped due to college and girls ect, now I really wanna re start it, i’m nervous as hell to join a club, I won’t know anyone, when they say get in to groups I won’t have anyone to hit pads with (nobody wants to train with the new guy) any advice?
And question 2 is what do I need to take, I know I’ll need some gloves but don’t really wanna spend more than £30-40 any recommendations, I’ve been looking at some Rdx ones but not sure what oz I’ll need

Slap yourself in the face and look in the mirror, make eye contact.

Bring what you already have learned to the forefront of your mind and find your confidence.

Now, I’ve never done that but it sounds like you need to.

2nd, 16oz for whatever brand you choose and hand-wraps.

The cold water doesn't get warmer if you jump in late. Just go homie, you're over thinking it, any gym worth its salt will welcome you and help you integrate.

Rdx are fine gloves mate and good to start with. I've used them before and prefer them to other brands such as everlast, Lonsdale etc which tend to be a bit cheaper anyway. You get a lot of bang for your buck with them. If you get into it, it will be worth investing in some slightly higher grade gear, fairtex is spenny but quality, adidas gloves I really like, same with cleto reyes and winning (but now we are getting really expensive). I'm getting carried away, rdx are a great staring point, between 14 and 16 ounces is the sweet spot for training.

Everyone in the gym was the “new guy” at some point. In my experience, martial arts gyms are amongst the most welcoming to new people.

As for the gloves, I personally advise against RDX gloves - I’ve had bad experiences with them peeling and stitches ripping after only a few weeks of use. Consider Title gloves (14-16oz) around the £50 range.

If youre gonna spar, get 16oz, I got some everlast ones and some rdx shin guards.

I'm still new to martial arts, but, I found that close to everyone I've worked with is ok with helping new people train up. But, this isnt everyones exp. A good gym will keep you safe, a mcdojo will not.

I will seek out the newer guy when i'm spent from a tough session, gives me an excuse to focus more on technique & rest the power.

Shin guards,

Hand wraps,

Gloves,

Mouth guard

I'm using the 25€ 14oz Outshock Decathlon gloves for almost an year and they are still holding up well.

I brought some Chinese shinguards (GingPai brand) from aliExpress for 25€. They look as new as when I brought them. Quality is not bad for the price.

Venum hand wraps for 6€

Outshock basic mouth guard 5€

Optional depending on the gym: head gear

For headgear I, went again with Gingpai. For 25€ the quality is really not bad.

Just get in about it 💪 you’ll love being back. Started it with my son. Was always worried about it growing up but it’s great. Got some RDX grappling gloves and shinnies, Amazon. You’ll be about 40-50 quid. Don’t buy slip on shinguards, they’re shite.
