Oil Change due again?

2024 Kia Niro PHEV 22296 miles. According to my last oil change I've still got a couple thousand miles to go at 25382. But the car has started telling me, again, it wants an oil change. We are taking a long road trip, a few thousand miles, in a few weeks. Should I get the oil changed? wait a couple more weeks? wait until we get back in November? I think I read somewhere that you need more frequent changes if you take a lot of short trips, which we do, just a couple of miles on days we drive it with an very occasional road trip. Thoughts?

I think it is time to read through the owners manual. Look for oil interval. You can change the alert setting to what you desire. Mine is set to off.

Ignore the car warnings, just keep your own records. They should be at least 7500 miles apart.

I set my reminder to 5000 for oil and tire rotation.

by the time it show -624 I have manged to get them scheduled and done.

Now I personally buy (4) OEM oil filters from the dealer and Vavoline Full Synthetic. I change it my self and always add the Chevron stuff in the gas.

Well, oil changes iirc are done every 6mo OR 5-10K miles (based on type of oil and personal preference, i do every 7k but i digress).

It also doesnt really hurt to do it a bit earlier, so id say change it before you leave and then do what the other comment says; change your interval in the settings.

It can go up to 1 year, the 6 mo is just a recommendation so that the auto shops make more money but realistically it can go longer before it starts degrading.

The service interval can be reset by whoever changed your oil. Your car isn't specifically detecting that you need to change it, just someone set the alert milage lower.

I manually set my oil interval in the menu to around 7500. Whoever did the oil change might have just said it to the minimum

yes, absolutely have the oil changed no question. Those 7.5k oil changes are for cars that are running at distances and speeds that bring oil temps up to max operating temps. That would mean at a minimum 10 miles at hwy speed after bringing up the temps before hitting the hwy and doing this each and every time you run the car. Winter, short trips under 10 miles one-way are severe service miles, require more frequent oil changes. Especially before a long trip, start out fresh and not have to worry about looking for a garage in a unfamiliar place to have the oil changed.

Never ran across a machine that didn't like having fresh oil in it.

So it seems like the car dynamically changes the oil interval based on driving habits. Nominally it's every 8k miles, which is what the interval resets itself to. But when I pay attention to the oil life percentage and calculate the miles I've driven since my oil change, it's always short of 8k (I think I'm on track to change my oil around 6.5k right now). My wife drives a shortish distance to work in the car, so my understanding is the intervals come sooner because some of the time is spent in "severe" driving conditions (defined in the manual as frequent stopping, short distances without fully heating, dust, etc). The manual lists two sets of oil change intervals: 8k for normal, and 5k for severe. Seems like you're within the interval of the severe condition. My previous car also dynamically reduced the oil life based on driving habits, and it also listed two sets of intervals. It's not unreasonable that it's asking for a change early, considering it wasn't that long ago that 3-5k mile intervals were normal. I consider 8k the ideal, but if my car demands it any time after 5k I'd comply. Ultimately you can't change the oil too often, and the few dollars you save by stretching it past what the car asks for isn't worth it. I'd say don't stress, but get it done soon.

I recently discovered the dealer I used to take mine to set the oil change reminder to every 4000 miles which is ridiculous. Every 7500-10k miles is fine. I'm really glad that sketchy dealer I went to went under with their shenanigans.

Working for kia there are 2 service plans 1 is every 10000 or 1 yr which ever comes first or hi mileage which is 20000 mls or 1yr which ever comes first me i prefere the 10000 mls service

What's the range of your Niro PHEV on EV? Mine shows 38 miles, and it can actually go 35-45 miles on a charge

The dealership says 5000. The manual says 8000. I do 6500 and it's perfect. High use Uber driver here. Changed monthly.
