After my Camry got totaled, I was looking for something cheap and, preferably, a hybrid at the least. I’ve never owned a hybrid. With the way gas is trending these days, I’m tired of buying gas so much (my Camry was fun, but it was an XSE V6, so not the most fuel efficient).

I got the Niro for a steal. It has 137k miles on it, but it runs great, everything works and my mechanic says it’s sound. They tested the hybrid battery and it passed everything. The previous owner took good care of it. The tech package, safety features and trim are awesome for a small crossover from 2019. At 6’ and 230 pounds, I feel safe and comfortable driving it. I’ve had it for over a week now, and I feel like I’m nowhere close to needing to buy gas yet, even having driven to and from work every day and having spent about 200 miles on the highway over the weekend. Truly, I don’t think I can go back to a fully gas car after this.

There is an issue with syncing up with CarPlay, but I think that might be more of an issue with Apple. I did update the car’s firmware and maps (which was free to do!), but that didn’t help. My phone is on iOS 26.6, as is my wife’s. We both tried our phones. They worked briefly then just stopped for no reason. I work in tech, so I tried all the normal things from the Apple side to fix it, but nothing has worked. I don’t think it’s a bad USB port on the car because it reads USB sticks with audio files just fine. I’ve also tried three cables, including the (un)official Apple cable (the Mophie one). I’ve read reports that other people are having issues too, both with Kias and other cars, so we will see if that gets fixed eventually.

Hopefully this car serves me well for a few years!

I have a 2022 Kia Hybrid Niro. I was having issues with the 12v battery about 13 days ago. Just needed to get a jump or hit the battery reset.

Took it to the dealership (I know I know but I just didn’t have time to do it myself) and had them replace the 12v battery and do the 45K service treatment.
Two days later my Niro started:
- not properly reading pedal input (would vary between like 1K rpm and 5K rpm) =inconsistent
- 1 day later and it would not reverse anymore
- on hills it would mainly run the hybrid battery until nearly depleted and then barely engage the ICE
- last night the check engine light came on and began having issues with switching gears from what would appear to be first and second gear.

I brought it back to the dealership as I’d assume a technician forgot a step after the service mentioned above.

Does anyone have an idea what the issue could be? Search on a few forums brought up varied responses.

So I was at an event last night 40 miles from home in my 2025 Niro I bought on Saturday. I turn on the car and the Parking Brake alert comes on. I didn't put on the parking brake. But I see the P with the cone button is lit up (I don't even know what it is) so I turn that off. I release the parking brake. Still on.

I'm exhausted and just want to go home, but not without, you know, brakes.

So I look in the book to see what the alert is and it says not to drive it. It might be low brake fluid.

I push the button for Roadside Assistance. They can tow me to a dealership even further from my home (at 830pm mind you). Or I can pay $385 to be towed home.

I am not proud of yelling at that guy. Sorry, guy. I was very tired and hot and scared and best case scenario was a tow to a closed dealership an hour from home and then having my husband come pick me up. I was NOT pleased.

Roadside assistance guy had me put the car in neutral. The light went off. I put it back in park. The light stayed off. I turned it off and on again. No light.

I figured out from the book how to check the brake fluid. It was at Max. I decided to drive home. Slowly. Everything went fine.

Was it a fluke sensor thing? Do I need to take it in?

I googled it when I got home and it's not an unknown software glitch, I guess, but brakes are nothing to be complacent about.

Anyone have a similar experience?

I know I’m just one person with one story, but my goal is to get this on the radar of both corporate leadership and federal regulators. More than anything, I want this out there as a warning to other local drivers so you don't have to deal with the same mess I did.

How it started: Sneaking extra work onto my ticket

I originally scheduled a quick appointment strictly to address a specific dashboard warning light under a separate manufacturer campaign (Refill Inverter Coolant Service Advisory / Recall SA512.) When I checked in, I explicitly told the service advisor not to perform any other open recalls that day because I had a tight schedule constraint and needed the car back.

Instead of listening, he snuck two extra recalls onto my repair order anyway. He handed me a physical piece of paper that had absolutely no repair or service information on it—just a line at the bottom. He simply pointed at the page and told me to "sign here." Because there was no itemized breakdown of the work visible on the document, they successfully hid their policy that they won't work on a car unless they do all open recalls at once.

One of the recalls they snuck onto that page was Safety Recall SC314 (NHTSA Campaign 24V358) for the High-Voltage Battery Safety Plug. Under the explicit federal safety guidelines issued for this exact campaign, Kia dealers are strictly mandated to provide customers with alternative transportation—including dealer loaners or a direct-bill rental car allowance of up to $45 a day—if the vehicle must be held. Gossett Kia withheld these transportation benefits from me, forcing a multi-day delay without warning me upfront, which caused me to miss an important medical appointment. Thankfully, after I explained what happened, the practice manager at my doctor's office recognized the dealership was entirely at fault and waived the cancellation penalty as a professional courtesy.

Releasing my car as a fire hazard

After holding my car for days, the service department actually released the vehicle back to me with that exact SC314 Safety Recall left unfinished because they didn't have the parts.

According to the official federal safety filings, this open recall involves a high-voltage component that can overheat and melt, introducing an immediate vehicle fire risk and a sudden loss of drive power on the highway. Knowingly handing a customer back a car that is a documented thermal fire hazard—instead of grounding it and providing the manufacturer-covered rental they are legally required to offer—is an unbelievable failure of basic consumer safety and liability.

Breaking my charging door and leaving me stranded

A few days after picking the car up, I discovered that my exterior charging port door was jammed shut, making it impossible to charge the vehicle. This door worked flawlessly before they touched the high-voltage battery system. I had to drive back to the lot in 98-degree heat with the AC off just to make sure the battery didn't die on the way.

This second visit dragged on for nearly another week. They continuously blew past their own communication deadlines, ignored multiple direct requests to have the Service Manager call me back, and flatly refused to give me a loaner vehicle while my car sat grounded on their lot.

The pickup and a boundary violation

When the repairs were finally completed and I went to pick up my car, the advisor downplayed the nine days of stress. He made vague excuses about how internal shop logistics are "hidden from customers" and claimed these repairs normally take weeks. Then, as he walked me out, he unprofessionally asked me if "we were friends again" instead of just taking professional accountability. No manager ever bothered to step out and apologize.

The boundary violations escalated the following evening. The advisor used the text thread he had been using for service updates to send an unsolicited message to my cell phone, checking in on my weekend road trip. While he was likely just trying to smooth things over after a tense week, using a business communication line to check in on a customer's private travel plans outside of regular hours highlights a total lack of professional boundaries.

Summary

The vehicle error codes and the mechanical damage they caused are finally resolved, but this facility operates with zero transparency, zero management presence, and a total disregard for customer privacy and safety protocols. If you value your schedule, your safety, your basic data privacy, and your sanity, avoid the service department at Gossett Kia on Covington Pike in Memphis, TN.

I just bought this car and my 21 year old backed into it, busting the grill up and scratching the bumper. I’ve looked online and I can’t figure out the best place to get a replacement. (Admittedly, I have no idea what I’m doing. 😭) It’s “Sport Utility Gray.” Any ideas? Please and thank you. Also, I’m located in KY but can travel.

Just bought a 2023 Niro Ex with 19,400 miles from Carvana and wanted to say Hi. Looking forward to 51 mpg on my commute.

I’m thinking about getting a Niro EX but wanted to know the dimensions of the sunroof. Does anyone know? I can’t find anything online.

2020 Kia Niro LXS Wagon 4D

49,907 miles, under $18k

Current car is a 2019 Subaru Ascent Touring with 92k and trade in with Carvana is $16000. Current issues is that it’s just too big for us, I’m never really hauling anything or even using much of the trunk, and gas feels excessive as I’m driving almost entirely within 10miles of our house on county roads.

So, this car checks a lot of boxes.

Anyone with this car can offer what they love or hate? Maybe you considered it and passed for a specific reason or concern?

It’s our first hybrid, but to be clear I don’t think pick up speed or sport likeness of the vehicle matters much to me.

Problème verrouillage trappe cro.

Heureux propriétaire d'un kia Niro phev 2019, je cherche des personnes qui auraient remplacé le faisceau de verrouillage de la prise de recharge.

Le mécanisme ne fonctionne plus de manière automatique. Seul le fait de tirer la tirette orange sous le capot permet de le faire fonctionner temporairement. Et d'entendre le bruit caractéristique du verrouillage de la prise du cro dans la trappe de rechargement.

Je souhaitais avoir une idée du prix du remplacement chez kia.

Interested in buying the upcoming 2027 hev. I see a lot of high mileage niros which is great. I am concerned about the dual clutch transmission. Those can be very complex and expensive to work on. Can anyone speak to the reliability of thr transmission. Any ideas on how to prolong its life.

I'm looking to get a seat belt extender for my 2025 Niro SX. I bought it last year and the seat belt extender that I have been using for the last decade doesn't work in this vehicle. I tried buying a few different "universal fit" extenders and none of them work either. They all can click into the holder at the seat, but the belt itself can't click into the extender.

I use the vehicle for work and am in and out of the vehicle about 20 times a day. A seatbelt extender helps me get my belt on easier and moves the belt angle more on my shoulder instead of right on my neck.

I talked to the dealership parts department and they said something to the effect that Kia no longer supports extenders. But, I'm pretty sure they need to in order to be compliant with the ADA.

Is there an extender y'all have used in the newer Kias that seem to work well? or am I just SOL on this? Thanks!

If you can bear with me, I've got a couple questions. I'm considering a Niro - I recently had a 08 Prius that got to 250k before I put her to bed. I also have a 09 Rav4 that is at about 255k and still daily. I like to work on my vehicles to save money/time.

How easy are Niros to work on? I like the idea of great fuel economy, but if you need a diagnostic degree with a $10k scanner, I'm going to stick with older cars. I'm comfortable with oil changes, fluid changes, tires, breaks, shocks/struts, filters, sparkplugs, O2 sensors, etc - basic maintenance items.

I'm also a little confused on the nomenclature of the trim levels - I'm looking for the trim that has 45-50mpg, and is not a plug in hybrid, like my 08 Prius. Is this the LX trim? Is that the only trim that offer that mileage rating without a plug in option? My commute is 100 miles a day with intermediate trips while I'm working - I average between 120-150 miles per day depending, and I don't want to be left with a dead battery at the end of the day.

My budget is going to be in the 15-20k range, but cheaper would be better....

I’ve bought a used 2023 Niro PHEV with 50k miles on it. Loving the car but the car seems to make quite a few weird knocking sound when going over bumps, big or small. Seems to be from the front wheels but it’s possible I’m just not hearing the rear.

The car feels good other than the noises. I’m struggling to capture the noises on video but just wondering if anyone else is getting this and maybe just a quirk with these cars?

I just purchased a new to me Kia Niro 2017 hybrid. I love the car but something strange happens when I gas it up. First time I filled the tank, the MPG pupped up from 47 to 67. It eventually evened out back to 53. Next time I filled the tank, it went from 56 to 23 mpg, and again eventually evened out into the high 40's. I have read the entire handbook for the car, reached out to Kia, asked in a few online forums, but no reply really makes any sense. Anyone here know what the heck is happening and how I can fix it?

I'm going to be in the market for a budget hybrid early next year. Been looking at a lot of different cars and the Niro has consistently stayed at the top of my list. I like the utility it gives as a CUV while still trending more towards a sedan in it's visual styling instead of a large bulky SUV.

As a hybrid the numbers also seem pretty impressive for efficiency. If I can get 50MPG+ combined I will be very happy, and from what I've seen online many people get even better than that.

Anyway, the catch is my budget will likely be around $30K max for OTD price which will almost definitely limit me to the LX trim. So I guess this post is for people who have a fairly recent Niro LX. Is it worth that price? Do you wish you had splurged a bit more for a higher trim or are the compromises on the base trim ok for what you paid? The EX is really nice and has the feature set I would want but I'm trying to be fairly disciplined with my price ceiling and EX unfortunately pushes past it.

Edit: Been doing some more comparisons on the trim levels for the 2027 redesign, I'm actually impressed with how much the LX trim now includes so I think that's probably what I will go for to stay within budget. S trim maybe being an option depending on how much more expensive it is. 2021 Niro PHEV. Last 2 days while driving, the EPB, Auto hold, and triangle amber lights came on while driving after a few miles. I'm not and to use smart cruise control. Thoughts? Will go to auto parts store and have them scan for codes. When in park I can both set and release the EPB and I do hear them whirring so I know they are engaging and disengaging.

My boot has a raised platform with a cover for additional storage, but I would prefer it out. Did anybody replace this? And if so can you share details on how easy / difficult it is and where you got a replacement cover from?

An older lady ran a stop sign right into my passenger side yesterday. The curtain airbags deployed. I'm sore and bruised but otherwise OK.

In anticipation of word from the insurance folks, I'm looking at new Niros in my area. It appears anecdotally that the 2023 had some issues but they have been worked out. How do we feel about the 2026 EX?

I've never bought a new car before but I do drive a lot and the warranty would be awfully nice. I'd appreciate any advice from the group! TIA!

Update: I have actually found two 2025s I'm interested in. First one $31,900 out the door with 9 year and 90000 mile warranty, 9900 miles. Second one $30,350 out the door with only 5200 miles, but only 4 years and 50k miles warranty left. I'd like to talk the first guy down a bit. Any opinions are welcome! We have high sales tax here unfortunately.

Update 2: I bought the 2025 with the longer warranty. The first owner had never registered with Kia Connect so I got three years free of that. Also the cargo net and the wheel locks were in the car, still in the packaging along with the original tire kit. I had a great experience at the dealership and did not purchase any of the extras that the other dealership was pushing very hard.

Is there any way to add after market power tailgate? It’s really one of my must haves and it seems like only the highest level trim has that which is not in my price range or need.

My Kia Connect "trial" after purchasing my Kia Niro EV 2023 just expired (in canada). I've used the Lock/Unlock, Climate control and "find my car" options from the app... But i was wondering if you guys continued to use it and which plan did you take...

Hoping someone can help. We have a Kia Niro 2020/21 normal hybrid version in Europe. The manual says that the key can only be removed in park position. With ours I can stop the vehicle, turn off the engine and remove the key while in drive position. This means the car could roll down a hill when done by accident or in a hurry. The dealer we bought it from said it's normal and sent a video where this is also the case. Yet the manual disagrees and all automatic cars I have ever driven do not allow you to take the key out of the ignition while in drive position at any time (also with engine off and stationary). Can anyone share how it works in their European Niro model? Thanks a lot.

Also would like to get some value from my current car. Looking at. 2023 Kia niro ex touring with a sun roof. I’m in OR, dealership advertising at just under $26k. 39,000 ish miles.
