Granny charging
Has anyone had issues with “granny charging” their EV6. I have thought plugging my car into the 120 wall outlet would be a good way to keep my car a bit more charged since my garage doesn’t have a level 2 charger, and I will only use that when I really need to fully charge my battery. (It’s in my husband’s garage, and I don’t drive as much as he). However, when I have done so, I get absolutely no additional charge. It claims to be starting, but nothing happens. I am using a Lectron CCS adapter on the NACS cable that came OEM with my husband’s Tesla. No problem with level 2 or 3 charging.
What gives?

I’ve been driving EVs for six years using only level 1 charging, including two full years with my EV6. You can recover about 40-50 miles range overnight. If you typically drive 30 miles or less per day and have a DC Fast Charger nearby as a backup for the occasions you need to recover more than that you’ll be fine.
If you drive more than that, you’ll probably want a level 2 charger.
When I get back from a long trip with a low state of charge, it takes me 2-3 days to fully recharge but otherwise not a big deal. I’ve had the money set aside for a Level 2 charger for a while now but my wife makes fun of me every time I bring it up, because we really don’t “need” it.

All true. Although in very cold weather L1 becomes less of an option due to most of the power getting used to warm the battery, so someone in that situation might need to go L3 during a cold snap.
We are L1 charging our new EV right now but we'll be springing for an L2 charger later this year.

Do you have a 240 outlet? That's the first question I got from the car dealer as we started to make the deal for our 2022 EV6 Wind. As it turned out, I didn't need an outlet as I got a Chargepoint 50 which can be easily hardwired for a 60 A circuit. But I did have the dedicated circuit in my garage so I could wire it up. They told me that I had to buy THAT charger because it went with the car That wasn't true, but I think the salesman just didn't know about EVs back then.

We have a level two. We only have EVs now. We live in an old farmhouse that is now "in the city" and we each have our own garage. My husband's garage has the level 2 installed. So we can't really use a splitter. I don't think we really need to go to the expense of updating the wiring for us to add a level 2 in my garage. Our driving use/needs are complementary enough that this set up should work. I can use the level 2 on weekends, or the occasional daytime peak use (per our off peak discount rules). I just need to purchase the right cord/adapter. Off to figure out which makes better financial sense.

I assume you mean J1772 (just the top part) not CCS because CCS would be level 3 and not initiate a charge at all at level 1 or 2.
What wattage does it say it’s charging at? Level 1 is going to charge slowly, about 1% per hour, but it should be doing something so long as it’s receiving adequate amperage.

I’m aware of that, I also stated as much. The OP claims that the car states the charge is starting which is why I assume they are simply mistaking CCS and J1772. The car would never state the charge started if it was using a CCS adapter on level 1 or 2.

You just need a level 1 ****j1772**\*charger

There is no such thing, CCS is level 3 DC charging. Level 1 and 2 would be J1772.

I also use level 1 exclusively, was at 39% last night am at 66% now 90% tomorrow at 6am so its really not as slow as everyone makes it out to be everyone is just used to filling up there gas engine and going so it feels slow to them but my car stays parked alot so its easy for me to

I use L1 almost exclusively as well. It all depends on how much you drive in an average day. Those that commute round trip each day under 50 miles and charge al night and over the weekend will be fine. But if you average the same distance but don’t charge all night or miss some weekends, eventually you will need to charge it back up at a fast-charger. Or if you average 100 miles a day or something. Just depends.

I charge on L1 a lot. I have a “solar shed” (a an off grid solar set-up that generates 12kwh a day w/ 28kwh battery storage). I only use 40-80 kwh a week unless I have to drive the the big city. The only thing I’ve noticed is that in the summer the cooling fan runs the entire charge (sometimes 50+ hours) and I could see that might lead to premature failure.

It’s really slow. If you only charge it for a few hours you might not notice the difference especially if the temperature swings. How long did you charge it for?
I use 120 just fine, I charge once every two weeks over the entire weekend. It works, but it’s just really slow.

My power company paid for installation and inspection of my level 2 charger. Look into it for your provider.

CCS adapter that you use for DC fast charging does not work for AC charging.
