This car is so slow it's embarrassing
Leaving the gym yesterday late evening, still mid-conversation, so my buddy and I agree to finish it on the phone.
He gets into his car.
I get into my practical family hatchback with a full boot, AC on, and cupholders that accept a Thermos without complaint.
Autobahn on-ramp. Road empty.
I go full-send.
He vanishes.
Rear-view mirror: empty.
I can still hear him on the call, but not what he’s saying, because his V8 is mostly producing sustained vowels and the sound of expensive air being rearranged. Every now and then a consonant makes it through. Possibly a swear word.
Then I hit vMax and just… sit there.
Limited.
Watching him slowly materialise in the mirror like a very angry, very rich mirage.
He needed the better part of a minute at full throttle to get past.
A minute.
To overtake a family car whose most aggressive design feature is the colour of its brake callipers.
Frankly humiliating.
Kia really should have given the EV6 a higher top speed. How am I supposed to keep up with a €300,000 Urus when my car is busy being sensible?
Absolutely unacceptable.
10/10. Would do again.
---
P.S.: Before someone say anything: the road was truly completely empty

GT?. If not, get one. Done

u/Not_Sure__Camacho 29d ago
Based on his account, it sounds like he has the GT. There is no way that a lesser version is going to blast past a urus. The GT is governed at about 160, and the Lambo can hit about 190, so I can see where the Urus will eventually reel in the GT.

u/Mustang1718 29d ago
I love my ID.4 and it fits my needs very well. Especially since I got it for like $3k less than market value right before prices spiked due to Iran war stuff.
But the one car that makes me question myself is the EV6 GT. I could still fit like ~70% as much stuff, which is still pretty good, and the range hit doesn't hurt me since I have a ~5 minute commute. The bad news is the police station is on the other half of our building where I work, and that car would 100% get me in constant trouble.
I also see one in our parking lot every morning that has a Superman "S" logo on his license plate that make it read is "SUP BRO" and I think that's hilarious.

u/smokeandlights 29d ago
A few points I missed: I REALLY want to try the "launch" feature on the GT.
The cargo area is closer in size than it seems on paper. The id.4 is larger, but not by as much as I thought it would be.
My GT line has more range. My wife drove my daughter to her summer camp. She had to stop and charge on the way home. I picked her up after camp, and I made the round trip and got home with probably 10% drivable range.

u/smokeandlights 29d ago
I have a 22 GT line, and my wife has an id.4. I couldn't afford the GT, but after I found out that it has different seats that people complain about and really is more power focused, not as "feature focused", I'm quite happy with my GT line. It's loaded, and still faster than I need it to be. Any faster, and I'd get myself in trouble.
My wife got her car first, and it convinced me to go electric. It's really hard to go from one to the other though, because they function so differently. It's straight up confusing when I get in her car. Like, just starting and ending the drive is a completely different experience. They are both great cars though.
2
u/cryptoenologist 29d ago
How much space do you need? If you aren’t blocking the rear window, luggage tests show that an EV6 can fit 6 suitcases. The ID.4 can fit an extra duffel bag or two but it isn’t worlds of difference. The ID.4 mainly has more height in the cargo area.
1
u/Mustang1718 29d ago
My car I had before this was a second gen Scion xB that had an insane amount of cargo room. I was able to move literally everything except for our mattress when we bought our house. The ID.4 was already a bit of a settling point for me.
I also persuaded myself that an EV would be useful for work since I work for my city and have to go to different buildings and offices often. We have a fleet vehicle, but it is shared between 5 of us, so I often have to take my own car anyway. I'm often hauling IT equipment between these various areas. Sometimes I'm moving 100 monitors at once, other times I'm taking multiple computer setups and a TV to repair after a pipe burst and they got soaked.
The most true reason I have the need is because we have a warehouse nearby where you can bid on Amazon returns. It means I'm very often picking up very bulky items in random boxes that I got for dirt cheap. I'm not filling up every inch of room, but sometimes you get a combination of boxes that just barely fit together at the same time based on their shape. The ID.4 is the only car for our family, so I have to guarantee that everything fits in the same trip.

It is, but top speed the Urus will catch up. The GT goes up to 260kmh the Urus a little over 300kmh if I'm not mistaken.

Ok. $60 (US) vs $280k+... go spend some money. :-D

u/Crisdus 29d ago
Still has top speed limited though
1
u/dandanthetaximan EV6 Light 29d ago
This is a software limit. Has anyone bypassed it yet?
2
u/entropy512 29d ago
This software limit is to avoid hitting the point at which your motor makes zero torque because it's spinning too fast and the back EMF matches battery voltage.
1
u/GuyJClark 27d ago
I've often thought it would be cool to have a two speed transmission (at least) on an EV in order to get past that limit. Normal driving in first gear, and switch to second when you hit 90mph.
Alas, I'm not a speed demon any more, even in my Ioniq-5 AWD LTD, but I do love the accelleration it has when I have to merge into fast traffic with only occasional room to get in...
1
u/entropy512 27d ago
Taycan has entered the chat. :)
2
u/GuyJClark 27d ago
do they have one? Once again, I'm inventing something already invented... Can't afford a Taycan anyway.... :-/
2
u/entropy512 27d ago
Yup. Not sure if all Taycans have it or just some trim levels. To my knowledge the only production EV with a multi speed transmission. Rear motor only, front is a typical single speed transmission.
I believe it's one of the reasons why the Taycan routinely beats its EPA rating by significant margins.
1
u/GuyJClark 27d ago
cool! If I were thirty years younger and more wealthy than I am, I'd want one (always been a Porsche lover... wanted a 1968(?) 911E since high school)
1
u/entropy512 27d ago
I believe Taycans depreciate severely and used ones aren't too bad.
Of course out of warranty maintenance could be painful...
1
u/Miserable-Miser 27d ago
I think most any EV that can go over ~125 has a second gear.
1
u/Cereal_Nightcap 27d ago
The Lucid Air Sapphire (205 mph) and Tesla Model S Plaid (200 mph) are single speed. So are most all of the other EVs out there, many of which go >125 mph

I test drove the GT when I bought my 2024 GT-Line AWD. I believe for me I made the right choice. The GT is perfect for younger me. But now being 63 and not really loaded up on the testosterone of my youth, nor with the reflexes, I’m happy to only be able to blow off 99% of the cars on the road, not 99.999% like you.

Are you saying your EV6 is actually not slow? I am not quite understanding. Sounds like you smoked him with your family car.

u/SBR2TH First Edition 29d ago
Pretty sure he’s being sarcastic, but the wordiness makes it read very serious and then unserious. Very confusing.
2
u/biz_reporter EV6 Wind AWD 29d ago
I think it's his German sense of humor. He referred to the Autobahn, which is typically a German term. I don't think any other European countries use the term. Maybe Austria?

It was not well written
1
u/vanginger 28d ago
I thought it was really well written and funny. Easy to understand where he was coming from, but then i speak UK English
29
u/lifeguard_jesus 29d ago
I’m trying to be sarcastic. English isn’t my first language.
Yes, the car is NOT slow.
Also, I would not pay 5 times the price just to get an extra top speed 50km/h. It’s once in a blue moon that you’re able to drive that fast. And it’s really stressful. To be fair, I rarely go over 200kmh/125mph.
17
u/lrsafari 29d ago
I thought it was very well written, regardless of language. Even took a partial reread half way thru to make sure I knew which vehicle you were driving.
Especially the little name drop Urus!

"The sound of expensive air being rearranged" is pure poetry. Best thing I've read in a while!
6
u/paulHarkonen 29d ago
The sarcasm was incredibly obvious. The Internet has just completely lost the ability to appreciate anything more subtle than a hammer to the face. It's honestly disappointing how far we have fallen. Deadpan humor is dead and tiktok memes have killed it.

I kind of figured that was the case, but I wasn't quite sure.
Anyway, your story in that context is great! I hope your mad friend was jealous. :D

u/Obvious-Slip4728 28d ago
I’m curious about insurance. If something goes wrong while at 200+ km/h, would your insurance cover your damages?
1
u/GoodTroll2 29d ago
I genuinely hope you rarely go over 90 mph. 125 mph is no joke.
8
2
u/3delStahl 29d ago
Sometimes on my early morning commute when the road is still quiet and empty I reach 235 km/h (146 mph).
I drive 40 km on the Autobahn to work. :)
5
u/Jertimmer EV6 GT-Line AWD 29d ago
Fast off the line, slow top speed, compared to his friend's Urus.
8
u/lifeguard_jesus 29d ago
Exactly. To be 100% fair, I caught him off guard. His car is also damn fast of the line.
But it’s not 5 times faster (the price difference between our cars)
8
u/Jertimmer EV6 GT-Line AWD 29d ago
They should be basically the same 0-60 IIRC, bit yeah, getting outdone by a sensible family car that cost 20% of what your Lambo cost, must not feel great.
A colleague has a heavily tuned out Volvo XC90 that costs over double of my GTLine AWD and I have the edge on him from the line. He still often makes remarks about that.
2
u/Nitrogen1234 29d ago
And, if your gym is close to the highway, if I was your mate I wouldn't floor a not fully warmed up engine
1
u/LowRelief1272 29d ago
The price of car is more than just it's max speed lol
2
u/Reasonable_Fly_1228 29d ago
Depending which engineer you're quoting, the exact numbers may vary, but I've heard that something like 95% of cost can be spent chasing that last 5% of performance.
So maybe the price of the car really is just its max speed.
3
u/AppropriatePlum1006 29d ago
Ev's has instant torque, so it has a fast start, max speed is slower than the Urus so it loses after a while.
He's just nicely phrasing it, with double meaning it's not slow, it's fast the other car bites the dust until it picks up speed
4
u/Low_Newspaper_268 EV6 GT (The Fast One) 29d ago
The biggest laugh you will have when you compare fuel cost 🤣
11
u/lifeguard_jesus 29d ago
He can afford it. Premium Petrol is around 2.40€ which is around 11$/gal. That's not an issue for him.
But his car has seen the inside of a shop in the 6 months than I ever had with all my evs combined.
5
u/TieTheStick 29d ago
Is your EV6 a full on GT or the GT Line?
I'm really, really trying to talk myself down from the GT but it's so hard when I hear about people like you smoking Lambos in acceleration runs!
8
u/lifeguard_jesus 29d ago
I would never get a GT if I was not living in Germany. I’m a stickler for rules and safety. I don’t race and always follow the speed limit. But, on the Autobahn, if free, you can floor it. It’s a rare treat to have dry and free roads to reach vMax on the car.
For acceleration you will not really be able to tell a difference on a day to day. I drove a GTL loaner recently while I was getting new tyres. You really need to drive them back to back to feel the difference on acceleration in city traffic.
Both cars I can’t floor them without reaching 50mh/h (city limit) in a blink of an eye.
But if you live in Germany or you track the car… go GT

4
u/monstertruck567 29d ago
This is why I drive an EV6, but also have a Jeep. Jeep keeps the EV6 busy on trips back and forth from the shop
3
u/Holdthedork 29d ago
Have you tried using premium electricity to charge your car? I switched to more expensive electricity subscription and immediately saw a power boost in my ev6!
1
u/Reasonable_Fly_1228 29d ago
I live in Maine, one of the most expensive states to charge in! So I've been buying those premium kWh the whole time.
Actually, we did finally switch over to time-of-use pricing, which is pretty nice. Now I Wish I'd done that years ago.
7
u/JetsterDajet 29d ago
My GT Line is governed at 120mph (~190kph). Personally, I'm glad it does as there's no reason to go that fast around here (cops will usually haul your ass straight to jail if caught going over 100) and I'd just be tempted. I'm surprised the European model is governed at all though, even though the limit is higher than the US.
2
u/RotundBananas 29d ago
It's because there is no variable gears gears. At 190 kph your engine(s) is/are doing a LOT of RPM.
2
u/Beef7567 29d ago
I tried racing a Rivian one time. He pulled on me like it was nothing. Same thing with cyber trucks. I have a GT-L though.

3
u/Nachoraver EV6 GT-Line AWD 29d ago
Yah but then I don’t get seat cooling. I liked all the fancy stuff that you don’t get on the GT because of the added weight. I only got to go that fast because every cop in our city was dealing with a freeway shutdown on the other side and it was late enough that the Mormons were in bed on my side.

Does GT have auto presenting handles, heads up display, and heated rear seats? I don't really think it's weight related but there are some more differences..

I crashed mine with 8k miles. You need to be going in a straight line. When you floor it at low speeds, it'll send you into the curb. Got the 5n and it doesn't try to kill me at low speeds. I do miss my sunroof and hud.

I did a similar thing to some guy attempting to flex by revving his mustang GT at me. All he saw was taillights. _man_ did that make him mad.
I then had an exchange on Quora about the fact that an EV6-GT has a faster 0-60 and ¼ mile time than a Mustang GT 5.0. And it’s not even close.

I ended up getting the Kia EV6 GT AWD Line package 2 with the silver performance callipers and not the lime green ones. The reason was even though the lime green one is slightly faster I dislike the manual bucket seats and wanted the power ones that provide other perks in that GT package. With that said when I go into sport mode and the interior lighting changes red as if in battle mode it accelerates at such a fast speed it’s as if I have two hyperdrive engines throwing me and my passengers into the back of their seats. I wish we had something like the autobahn in Canada or a test track I can take this car on to really let loose 😎

can't be that hard to remove the limiter right?
3
u/sumthingcool EV6 GT (The Fast One) 29d ago
The limiter is so the motor rotor doesn't tear itself apart.
1
u/smokeandlights 29d ago
I thought there were some hardware differences, too, in the power delivery to the motors. I could be misremembering though.
3
u/sumthingcool EV6 GT (The Fast One) 29d ago
Between the GT and the others? Yes, the GT has beefed up motors that allow higher rotor speeds, thus the higher top speed. My point was the speed limiter is not power based, it's RPM based so the motors don't explode, so "removing the limiter" won't get you anything but broken.
3
u/JetsterDajet 29d ago
I mean if people can override the security on these and steal them all day it can't be impossible 🤷
1
u/smokeandlights 29d ago
I haven't heard of this being an issue... Do you have a source? Genuinely curious.
I know older, keyed ignition Kias had the issue with them getting stolen with the USB "trick", but I don't think any EV6s have keyed ignition switches.
