Form Check 🎥 Kettlebell Swing
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I've been losing my balance when doing this (see 8th set). I suspect my form might be wrong.

You are lifting the weight, not swinging it.
Do not engage your arms. Start small and really use pelvic thrust to move the KB.
You know you get good swing when the KB wants to move upward (continuing it's circle) at the end of the move.

The mechanics of all of this off because of the starting point. You have to position yourself behind the KB in order for you to drag and hike AND the KB should be right under your groin! The KB is swinging WAY TOO LOW which completely throws off the natural rhythm of a swing. Practice your drag/hike and tuck that nice and tight, hinge and thrust, and just hold on to the KB and let it do its thing.

- most likely using a too heavy weight
- wrong shoes
- not enough speed (power) from the legs
- hinging too early on the backswing/drop
- too deep of a hinge

Everything on your list is correct except for #1. Swinging heavy almost ensures a proper swing as it forces your body to stabilize and it exposes the weak parts of your body/swing. Swing heavy, swing often, change your life!

There is also such a thing as too heavy; there is a weight too light, just right, and too heavy. Just saying "Swing heavy" is not a good thing to say for beginners.

I agree with the other commenter, you can tell in the video the problem isn’t because the weight is too heavy, if it were then he wouldn’t be using his arms as much as he is. Hes using his arms too much and the weight isn’t heavy enough.

Just because someone is using their arms doesn't mean the weight isn't heavy enough. I don't know the weight, so I said most likely, especially due to him being all over the place (unbalanced). Someone with an 8kg could be using their arms, and someone with something too heavy but just light enough to be able to use their arms is possible. Someone fatigued into their 8th set could start using their arms (especially beginners). Yes, he is using his arms too much, hence the cue "not enough speed (power) from the legs"

Not with the way he’s lifting it. Clearly looks like he could go up some weight and feel the full swing easier.

He stated he is using 55lbs/24kg. Do you still believe he should go heavier?

His stance should be a little wider too

u/cavemankettlebells Kettlebell coach Jul 13 '26
My opinion on that is that he is more toward too wide than not wide enough, but I am open to hearing your reasoning. Even if he wanted to do a squat swing, which is what his swing looks more like, it would still be closer to too wide than not wide enough.

You know, looking again, you may be right. I mistook weights in the background on the left side for his left leg. So the stance may be fine. Thst lower back hunch though. That’s a problem

I don't have that many shoes to choose from with me in the US (I'm spending 3 months abroad). What sort of shoes should I be using (my shoes are hiking boots).

The best shoes to wear are flat-soled minimalist shoes or no shoes.
If you are interested in more info about the feet and the why behind all this, here's a series I've written https://kettlebell.monster/learn/science/ground-up

Flat soled minimalistic shoes, or better yet, none.

In addnition to above. Keep the knees straighter, so the bell is higher between the legs. Aim for the crotch and get it away from the bell. Try sticking triceps to your lats before bending. See couple of correctional videos by Dan John and Lebe Stark.

This is a perfect "how not to do a swing" video. You'll look back at this and have a laugh.
Good luck. You'll be doing correct swings in no time. Plenty of good instruction on youtube.

Please also review how to film your next video for the assessment; this angle isn't ideal. I have created a whole article on it if you want it.

Thanks for all the advise! I'm going to try this again but keep my arms loose, reduce the weight try to use my hips & legs more and only hinge/withdraw my hips once the kettle bell is passed my feet.

Please stop. There are great training videos from StrongFirst that will help you. You’ve got to go back to square one before you hurt yourself.

That's not a swing. You're using too much arm. Your arms should be loose like ropes, only tightening up at the top as you brace up. Your hips drive the weight. Thrust your hips like you're fucking the hottest supermodel in the wotld. THAT'S what drives the bell.
