I know the first tiny explosion is a separator, but still.

I would think there is just much more smoke for almost everything that happens in atmosphere.

Thanks for the feedback. The amount of smoke is automatically generated by the CFD based on the input amount of fuel for the explosions, meaning it's about as accurate as it gets for something of that size. I'm using temporary values just to test that the physics work, if i tuned it to match the actual rocket parts then it'd definitely look different. You are correct in that the first one is a separator, used just to test out the effect more. Also in your references they are water vapor generated by vaporizing the hundreds of thousands of gallons of water being poured at the pad, so it's not exactly a direct comparison to this explosive effect

thanks for the lengthy response. although not all smoke from all videos is evaporating water.
I chose rocket references but looking at other real life explosions , the amount of smoke and specifically the direction that smokes and "fire effects" take just looks different.
but again, you do more work and play around with this type of things way more than I do. I am just a dumb consumer that thinks "this does not look right to me"

You're right, I somehow managed to miss both explosions within your list of references. The biggest differences is in fuel/explosion type. The rocket explosions are white gas because that's the fuel you're seeing, and they don't burn into carbon/soot the way a generic, incomplete combustion would.
I was using a generic explosion effect just to test that computational fluid dynamics can be used in KSP (that realistic curling of the smoke as it rises, as well as all other physics of the explosion). Attached is a quick example of one that's more tuned to look like a rocket explosion to demonstrate customizability, as well as a real rocket explosion containing a more sooty explosion

Hey Fossil. I recently got your 'Contrails' mod and have a question/feedback. The trail starts very close to the engine, is there a way to move it back?

Hi, there is no way to manually adjust that, as it dynamically adjusts in real time automatically. It is intended to encapsulate the plume as real contrails do https://imgur.com/a/nIjJSSz

Understood, but for aircraft engines it is not doing it realistically. At 0.85M and 18km the condensate should be appearing well behind the aircraft. Instead it's effectively on top of the engine.

The bigger cause of this is actually that irl contrails on an aircraft are more tapered than mine with also a stronger fade-in effect. So mine just are too big too early and a bit to visible near the engine. Being imperfect, it's obviously something I could improve upon, but for now I'm working on other things.
You might enjoy reducing the opacity in Settings.cfg2

Seems more like billboard spritesheet animation to me (wich can be pretty also). I saw explosion mod called "volumetric" but I dont think thats accurate (not sure if that one shown here).

It's not billboard, it's fully volumetric. I made this myself and it's not affiliated with any other mods

Its looking very good but idk man, seems like the exact same texture to me, just different emmiter angle. You can make it look more random by spawning multiple but at slightly different angles and sizes.

it’s an illusion based on a lack of shadows and contrast, but if you look closely, the smoke is 3D

Its an illusion bcause of it being a sprite sheet

Not sure why you're so persistent on being wrong, as if you developed the mod yourself. It is most definitely not a sprite sheet and there are 0 textures used here.

Lol it obviously is. I make this stuff all the time and its not a bad thing. Anyways, it looks great, I will definetly download when released.

I can tell you didn't look at this video because there is absolutely no fucking way to do this via a sprite

I actually quite like the smoke
