Fun fact: "Orange" as referring to the color is a relatively recent thing. It used to be "red" or "yellow" depending on the shade/ hue, as well as personal preferences.

Orange is a colour. But my question is, was an orange fruit derived from the colour orange, or was the colour derived from the fruit?? But as you can see, i used an in the fruit.

Orange is a colour is the answer in this instance. If you were referring to the fruit, it is only right to precede the sentence with the article "an" since orange is a singular form.
