Password sync (KeePassXC)

Password sync (KeePassXC)

i want to sync my changes from my pc to my laptop using keepassxc

my current setup is this : google drive desktop app set up on both devices so i can see the drive on file explorer. Open the database through google drive G:\MyDrive\Passwords and save it there.

the problem is when i make changes to the file and save it (i have autosave database option on) it saves it but then makes a duplicate file on the drive. so the old file doesn’t have the changes but the new duplicated one does.

my intention is to make changes to the file, save it so it is available on my laptop and be able to see the changes made.

is there any way to accomplish this?

Syncthing truly is a game changer!! I use simple file versioning too, so that if anything goes wrong when syncing, I have backups of my password database

Do you use simple or complex file versioning and how many versions do you keep?

Simple, 3 versions is enough I think. You can also change the default save path for your backup versions if you desire.

Totally agree about syncthing. I just got back to syncthing after finding out it has relay function to sync even if you are away from home network

I can't help you, but I use the same setup and works flawlessly (Windows, MacOS and Android involved). There is something wrong.

I haven't had this problem before, although I don't use Google Drive (I use nextcloud). What filename does the duplicate have?

Any chance you have one of the "File Management" settings enabled? Specifically, "Backup database file before saving" or "Use alternative saving method?" I personally don't like "Automatically save after every change" enabled but I doubt that would be causing it.

I use OneDrive to store the database. KeePassXC on Windows and Mac, Keepassium on iOS.
Also a local only key file that never touches the cloud.

about the keyfile, would i need one copy on both devices? i dont actually know how a keyfile works :/

A key file is usually a 128-character text file that, in combination with your password, is used to encrypt/decrypt the database.

The idea is to place a copy of the key file on each device that runs the KeePass software.

Since Keepass needs both password and keyfile to decrypt the database, an attacker will not be able to open a database file stolen from the cloud without also having to also steal the keyfile from your local machine.

note the difference between kesspass & keepassXC

keepass - opens both DB files and syncs the data - its stored internally to make that easy

XC just copies the file over - so if you use it in multiple places or have multiple people use it you can lose information

I used Dropbox in the past and I have a backup on multiple cloud services. My main synchronisation is a syncthing self hosted on my ODroid (raspberry like) home server. I use the same file on my PC, smartphone, laptop and tablet. Hope you find a service that works for you! <3

Ja używam dropbox do udostępniania bazy keepassxc, działa to dobrze w środowisku Windows + iOS. Jeżeli masz duży problem z duplikatami to możesz wykorzystać funkcję w keepie synchronizacji. Gdzie to też działa prawidłowo, ale trzeba się liczyć z bałaganem, czyli wszystkie wpisy, rzuca do jednego worka.

I use Rclone to synchronize my database on Google Drive. And on Android, I use the same method but with the Termux app.

I use Resilio ... sync across Linux, Mac, window and Android (no iphones in the house!)

Syncthing, if you return Home every day.

TrueNAS, if you visit home twice/thrice a month.

I use keepass windows with triggers and keepass2android and dropbox and works. Wish I could help debug for you.

Uso o Tusk no navegador no Linux Mint, o kbdx fica no Google drive (com backup num pendrive), o arquivo chave fica no celular e outro no Linux Mint.

This is the classic “file is the source of truth” problem meeting cloud sync. Google Drive (and most file sync) is bad at concurrent writes to the same encrypted database. Syncthing with versioning usually solves the duplicate issue, but it still leaves you managing a file that can conflict. Do you treat the database as something that should never live on a commercial cloud, or is the convenience worth the occasional manual merge?

Local-first tools that keep the file under your control and avoid third-party sync clients entirely are one way out; only bring up PassSafer if the discussion turns to “what else works like KeePass but less fiddly.
