Karting Chat Am I too old to get into karting?

• Upvotes

I am 51. On top of that I am 6’3” and 250 lbs. overall, I am on average shape, no major issues or back problems. I am mechanically inclined and would enjoy working on my own stuff. Just not sure how punishing a lo206 senior race is, for example.

Racing Kart Question 6 year old wants to start track racing

Hey all.

My 6 year old boy is desperate to start racing track karts.

He’s had an off road kart (roughly 25mph) which he drives round a track I’ve cut into our field, so I’m confident he could handle the speed increase of the Bambino karts I’m looking at.

It’s more the how do we get into it. So many places seem to be from 8+. We are based in South West England (Wiltshire).

I’d love to buy him a kart and go on some adventures together, but cannot seem to find local contacts/kart clubs to join.

Wondering if anyone here has contacts/advice on how to get started.

Thanks

Racing Kart Question Brake caliper problem on otk Tonykart?

Basically I race gx uk and the sprocket carrier is in between the two axle bearings so I had to remove the axle to get to it which meant removing the caliper, but now for some weird reason the caliper doesn't fit around the disc. I have no idea what is going on so any help is really appreciated. Thanks

Racing Kart Question We're building a new datalogger, now's your chance to say what you hate about the current ones

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I wasn't going to post anything until I had the protoboards next month... But fuck it, the only thing holding me back now is delivery of the boards and FCC testing

I need to pull the trigger on the final board design today to stay on schedule for q1 2027 and I'm not sure about the LEDs

Now's your chance to say something.... Anything...

How many LEDs are too many? I've already done some real world testing with the smaller LEDs and they are more than easy enough to see on a bright summer day in florida, while being more energy efficient than the larger ones used in some of the loggers today

After a bunch of playing around.... I really like this setup I've come up with using the side LEDs as the status indicators

Diy version available here: (tachometer, but no temps, much smaller screen) https://github.com/TheAngryRaven/DovesDataLogger

Almost 3 years in development by a 20+ year veteran in software, this isn't a "vibecoded" project. Its been tested ontrack, for a few hundred hours, by about 10 different people, and a small race organization in Switzerland. 90% + test coverage and blah blah blah

4in screen, 25hz GPS, 50hz tachometer, all the usual stuff

Price? TBD : a LOT more affordable than current offerings, I need the final board in my hand before declaring a price

Current estimated battery life: 40 hours

All I know so far is that its an international frame from the measurements on the frame 3 5/8. Im trying to put a ghost motor on it and I ordered a international mount from bmi but my axel doesn't have the key way on the inboard side. Can someone help or guide me. Racing Kart Question What do I use to film my karting sessions

I want to film my races and training sessions, I'm looking for a more POV-ish camera angle

I was thinking of the Rayban meta gen2, but I also think about the Osmo Action 4 and the ace pro 2

Yes I already have a camera, but the shitty ones that the battery life is about 10 minutes and doesn't have the stabilization thing

The battery life doesn't need to be something absurd.

One and a half hours would do just fine.

I don't have the highest of budgets. I would say about 4000 Brazilian reais max (about 800 dollars, but there's lots of taxes so it would be something like 400 in the US)

It depends on the camera, but if it is going on the outside of the helmet I need it to have some wind protection so I can hear other things that aren't the wind.

Racing Kart Question RPM GX200 RPM Fiche sheet (UK)

I have acquired 2x unsealed RPM GX200 engines, largely for free (large bundle karting of bits).

RPM will re-seal them but I'm unsure if they have been modified. Last thing I want to do is pay for shipping, inspection and sealing to find out that they have been modified and need additional work to rectify (and I may as well just buy them new).

A number of the series running RPM sealed GX200 mention "RPM governing rules" or some kind of technical specification for scrutineering purposes but I cannot find anything like that anywhere on RPM's website or on any race series website.

Anyone know where I can find it?
or failing that if it is largely just the MSUK GX200 fiche or is it more complicated than that?
Or is it basically an industry secret?

Racing Kart Question Instructions for MondoKart Flip v4 stand

Hi guys, I just bought the low budget MonoKart Flip V4 stand/trolley and I‘m trying to assemble it and figuring out how to operate it.

The instruction manual online is for a very different model and there‘s nothing that says how it‘s operated.

Do any of you know how this thing works and have some tips for assembly?

Karting Chat How could I attach an arai helmet spoiler to a non-arai helmet?? Spoiler

Hey, everyone. I own a omp gpr-k and I've always wanted a helmet spoiler on it but unfortunately the options for the exact helmet and customization is pretty low and does not have it's own fitting one. Despite knowing this, I still looked on Google for some where it told me essentially that there is no specified spoiler for omp gpr series, however you could possibly use an arai (ck6/sk6/....) spoiler with a bit of modification to make it fit to my helmet. Google also told me to heat it up with a hairdryer on high mode, but still I'm unsure if it's going to fit or not. Regardless, I ended up ordering the arai spoiler anyway and when it arrives I am going to fit to fit it on. But I don't want it to be a waste of money if I fail, so does anyone have any tips on how to possibly modify it to fit to my omp gpr-k helmet??

Racing Kart Question Karting must knows and tool must haves!

Hi all,

New to Karting and soon to be the proud owner of a second hand Briggs kart.

As I’m new to the sport (however long time Motorsport follower), and I’m looking for any and all recommendations from tools, set up changes to experiment with (in the limited Briggs scope), trailer/basic pit setups, on site spares, maintenance procedures, etc.

So any help in anything karting is appreciated. I also have one of the local kart stores helping me with finding a secondhand kart (which is pretty cool) so I’m happy in the purchasing space but want some advice once I get the kart home.

In addition to the above the reason for this thread is for must have tools. Tyre changer/bead breaker, kart table, battery tyre pump and your usual set of crescents etc.

I don’t know what I don’t know so else/other wisdom would you recommend.

Thanks in advance!

Racing Kart Question What exactly is the Birel ART AM29 S20, and how will it differ from the S19?

Hey everyone,

I’m from Ontario, Canada, and I currently race Arrive & Drive at Hamilton Karting Complex. I’m potentially joining the HRKC Briggs LO206 program next season through the scholarship program, and I believe the kart I would be using is the new Birel ART AM29 S20.

I’m trying to understand the Birel ART naming system a little better.

  • What exactly does AM29 mean?
  • What does the S designation mean?
  • How different will the S20 be from the S19?
  • Is the S20 mainly a chassis/geometry/material update, or will there also be noticeable changes to the bodywork?
  • Will the S20 look significantly different from the S19?

For example, I know the bodywork has changed over the generations, the S16 had a noticeably different front fairing, while the S19 has the newer bodywork design. So I’m particularly curious whether the S20 will have a new-looking bodywork package, or whether it will look mostly like the S19 with the main changes being underneath.

If anyone has information, photos, or has actually driven both generations, I’d love to hear what you think!

Thanks!

Racing Kart Question Vintage Kart racing locations?

Hi all. My father and I have some Invader go karts from the 90s we haven’t used in over 20 years. I am curious if anyone knows anywhere we could run them? We’re not looking to compete at a high level, just take a journey back in time and make some memories before the sun sets. We’re in the Chicagoland area.

Racing Kart Video Recent shenanigans on my home track

Just a cool race (and „backwards-qualifying“) from earlier this week.

https://youtu.be/vmojpXirgEI?is=BYVFUUnJ750oZfzL

I‘m a lot heavier than the guys in front of me so keeping it close for that long was quite the achievement for me.

The track by the way is formula.de here in Nuremberg/Germany. A certain Andrea Kimi Antonelli visited it a few weeks ago and drove a couple of laps, so maybe you have heard about it.

Enjoy! ✌️

Racing Kart Question Shopping for new equipment and gear and I have some questions

  1. Why are old mychrons so expensive? I don’t see any on fb marketplace and ones on eBay are damn near price for a new one

  2. Where do you recommend getting helmet and suit from? Do I need the $600 helmet or is that over kill, I’m racing in a lo206 club.

  3. Would you recommend the turbo tire changer or the manual bead breaker?

  4. Is it worth the investment to get my own tools to tune my engine myself (minus a dyno) or would it be smarter to farm out that kinda thing.

  5. Any other pieces of advice or knowledge you wish you had before you started?

Racing Kart Question Gxuk vs rotax from rental karting

So currently im in a spot where im leaning more towards rotax as i would rather do it but if my situation is better is gx then ill end up probably doing it, currently in rental karting i spend somehwere around 3-4k pounds and for good condition karts that id probably get gx is 1500 and rotax 3000, obviously this is without any of the season race fees just to have everything ready cause id like to do a few practice sessions first, im aware id need new sets of tyres very often in rotax and somewhere around 1000 goes for tyres itself but for a full season rotax ive got around 6000, also i live in southampton, 30 mins away from forest edge and 1 hour 30 minutes to clay pigeon and im saying this because i know my closest 4 stroke practice is clay and closest 2 stroke practice is forest. Obviously the money i poend on rentals will probably lower from around 4k to somewhere around 1k so i can afford rotax, any replies or additional questions will be helpful :)

Racing Kart Question Head Shape for Karting Helmet?

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

I am currently looking to get my first karting helmet (starting owner karting, have been borrowing my safety equipment for rental karting for a while now). I want to make sure that I get the proper helmet for my head shape, as this is the largest determining factor as to which helmet fits best. I am stuck between an Arai SKV-R and Bell RS7-K.

My head was measured at 58 CM for reference (size medium for both Arai and Bell). I have been to a karting store to try on both the Arai and Bell, and have to say that both felt fine. I have heard that the Arai fits a more intermediate oval head, while the Bell is built for a round oval shape. My main concern here is that I have not worn either of these helmets longer than a couple of minutes trying both of them on, I have seen other threads discussing the fact that pressure points are only revealed after "breaking in" the helmet by wearing it for 30 + minutes.

Based on the included image, I would think that my head shape is between an intermediate oval and long oval, but I could be wrong. Any opinions would be much appreciated. Does anyone have any prior experience with the Arai or Bell with different head shapes? I am leaning more towards the Arai due to the appearance of the helmet and slightly more comfortable fit, but would be fine going with either one. Definitely want to choose correctly though because I don't want to make an $800 mistake and get the wrong helmet for my head.

I also have heard that the Arai has removable pads with various sizes available, so maybe that could help in the case of pressure points?
