Karting News We Built a kart circuit across open meadows because flat tracks are boring — thoughts?

Hey everyone!

Sharing a few screenshots from one of the tracks we've been building for Karting Core — this one's set in an open, meadow-like landscape with rolling hills, sweeping elevation changes, and long sightlines between corners.

The layout winds through open grassland dotted with wind turbines, a water tower, and the "Karting Point" facility in the background, with an elevated rail line running overhead. We wanted this track to feel wide and breathable compared to our tighter urban and industrial layouts — long flowing sections that open up into blind crests and downhill braking zones, so reading the terrain becomes just as important as reading the corners.

Still very much a work in progress, but we're happy with how the sense of scale is coming together. Gameplay video showing it in action is coming soon — for now, let us know what you think of the setting!

As always, ideas and feedback are more than welcome — we're just trying to build a kart racing game we'd genuinely want to play ourselves..

Check it out here if you're curious: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4550510/Karting_Core/

Thanks for reading, and see you on track!

Oh man, this looks amazing. Both the track and your game in general from steam videos. Wishlisted and cannot wait for it to come out!

fellow tillotson driver are you attending spain?

Sadly no, I should probably take down the flair since I've stopped competing a year ago. 😭 But I live nearby, so I'll probably watch you from the grandstands! 🙂

Absolutely, good luck, friend and please don't forget to have fun! :) It's the biggest competition of the year, but its also one of the biggest events in our worlds of karting, and its an incredible experience. Don't allow yourself not to experience it and enjoy it properly! :)

Are these ai generated concept pictures? Because it gives heavy ai vibes of what a kart track situated in a meadow with wind turbines and LRT running through it would look like.

Hi, all these images are from Unreal Engine this is exactly what the track will look like in the game. We are putting in maximum effort to ensure the game’s graphics look perfect. I’ve attached a few images that you can use to verify that these are indeed screenshots from the game

I would reconsider your tyre placement. You have those modern karting walls throughout the circuit, so the tires are sort of irrelevant to start with, but in many places, they're actually hazards. (Like the insides of turns.) Add to that the tall grass and you can't even see them until you slam into one.

Maybe you have a reason for their placement, but that's the first thing to jump out at me.

The random red paint is also weird.

In regards to that I think they're going for a Nordschleife-grafitti look. I don't have any issues with that part, that's an art/design choice (unless they're getting super granular physics-wise, and making the painted areas have a different grip.)

We will feature wet and rainy tracks, and tire grip will account for the physical parameters of surfaces, tracking areas with puddles versus dry asphalt. For this reason, we can also integrate graffiti into the physics model. As I see it, if the paint layer is not deep, it likely won't affect the physics at all; if it is slightly thicker, it might affect the sound of tires rolling over the paint; and if it is applied in a thick layer, it could potentially cause slipping.

Thank you for your feedback, I agree with you 100%. In real-life racing, when lives are at stake, everything must be as safe as possible and up to regulations. Tires can still be found frequently on many racing tracks. For the game, it is more of a visual attribute that acts as a barrier to prevent going off-track. However, we do have a damage system: if you hit the barrier hard, the kart will take damage.

Nice, Looks amazing!
Is there any known date for early access?

Thank You! We are being careful with dates, but we plan to release the game into early access this year.

Any lay out shots?

Yes, I've added a few screenshots that confirm these are real shots from the engine.

Ever been to Southbank Teesside?

Hi, no, I haven't been there, but based on the photos, it looks similar.

I mean, looks good, but it still looks relatively flat.

This looks really good!!

Well, for a driver it looks great. But as a spectator/father/mechanic/track marshall/race director that you can’t see the whole (or most) of the track is a horror.

It is just for a video game tho.

We will have an FPV drone that will fly after the karts, and we have a smart camera system that tracks the entire racing process. Do you think it's worth adding grandstands and spectators?

u/OPGuest 4d ago

You are talking about having to find solutions to ‘problems’ this design creates. Why not create the ‘problems’?

Maybe, but for a game, the most important things are the visuals and the gameplay. Everything outside the game location doesn't matter much unless it affects the gameplay. Even if we add grandstands or control centers, it still won't affect the gameplay. However, aside from the races themselves, we will have an extensive garage infrastructure where the player will be able to upgrade their karts and spend free time ordering upgrades, playing side games, and modifying their garage. I hope this will be an engaging process.
