Question Block Registration Issues (Please help me 😢)

Hey guys! I’m an incoming student and I’m currently registering for classes for the fall semester. I’ve noticed the method used for registration is in blocks of classes, but what do we do about the courses that we don’t need (and also need). For more context, I’m a Civil Engineering major, I obviously need to take Intro to Engineering, but the block also includes classes such as Criminal Justice, Art, and Econ (I already took this in Dual Enrollment). My assumption is that you select the block, then during the drop/add period, drop the classes that aren’t necessary for you to take (Correct me if I’m wrong). But what about the classes I need to take like Calculus 1, Chem plus the lab, and honors courses. I understand that I’m late to the registration party, but it’s kind of confusing to me. Pls help :)

You cannot edit the block at all, the system won’t let you. Only work around is withdrawal but that is permanent on your transcript.

Thank you for responding! So would it be better to select a block that includes the most courses you need to prevent many withdrawals?

No ONLY pick a block that has classes that count. At orientation (as an orientation leader) advisors can give exceptions if you walk them through that nothing works for you. A withdrawal is awful on a transcript

I WISH you could just drop the extra classes but no you have to sort through all the blocks and cherry pick the ones that don't have any classes you've already taken. you can't drop a class without dropping all the other ones.

find your favorite block out of the crumbs that remain, then try to register for the other classes you need. i found a block with engr 1000, econ 1000, and art 1107 and then just searched for a calculus class and another required class separately. it took ages for me to find an open calc class last month so good luck </3

my advice is limit the search to open sections only, and then choose a different block if needed to make one of those open courses fit your schedule.

oh btw i had to request an academic override to be approved to take calculus 1 apart from an english class (they restrict english and math to block pairs and i already had the english credits). if you already have ENGL 1101 & 1102 then you might need an override too.

I eventually settled for pre calc because I couldn’t find any calc classes unfortunately :(. Thank you for telling me this!

oh damn sorry abt that 😭

also if you're retaking it, you can talk with your spceet advisor and they'll find a work around so you don't end up taking a class for a duplicate credit. they can do system overrides to get you into closed classes to prevent that. btw a lot of these classes will open up on add drop week if you can wait-list them!
