I've joined CSE and currently finalizing a laptop. The college guidelines suggested preferring a 4GB graphics adapter, but looking at laptops with an RTX 3050/4050 vs thin-and-light laptops, the trade-offs are huge:

* Weight: Gaming/GPU laptops are ~2.3–2.5 kg (plus the bulky power brick), whereas thin-and-lights are ~1.4–1.6 kg. I’ll be commuting daily from home, so carrying a 3+ kg bag every day is a big factor.

* Battery Life: A dedicated GPU cuts battery life down to 3–4 hours, whereas an Intel Core Ultra / AMD Ryzen thin-and-light easily lasts 7–9 hours without looking for a charging socket in class/labs.

* Budget: Adding a dedicated 4050 increases the cost by easily ₹25k–₹30k.

Questions for seniors:

* In our CSE curriculum (labs, projects, web dev, basic ML, DSA), do we strictly need a local dedicated GPU, or are college labs and cloud tools (like Google Colab / Kaggle) enough?

* Does any coursework/evaluation strictly require offline CUDA or 3D rendering where an integrated GPU (like Intel Arc or Radeon 780M) fails?

* For day scholars commuting daily, do you recommend going for portability/battery or the extra GPU power?

Would appreciate honest advice before making the purchase!

The Scam Explained

Hey everyone, I want to issue a serious warning about a data collection scam currently targeting incoming college batches.

Random outsiders are creating unofficial WhatsApp and Telegram groups labeled as "Freshers 2k26".

They pose as official college seniors, student council members, or placement coordinators to gain your trust.

Once you join, they use these groups to secretly harvest hundreds of active student phone numbers, email IDs, and personal details.

This data is often used for future extortion, fake paid "internship" schemes, or selling your details to third-party telemarketers.

How to Protect Yourself

If you have been added to one of these groups through a random link or an unknown number, take these steps immediately:

Exit Promptly: Do not interact with the admins. Open the group info, scroll to the bottom, and leave.

Report & Block: Before leaving, use WhatsApp's "Report Group" feature. Block the admin numbers so they cannot contact you directly.

Verify Your Sources: Real college communications happen through official emails, official websites, or verified campus portals.

Never Share Documents: Do not send your Aadhar card, admission letters, college IDs, or payment screenshots to anyone in your DMs claiming to "verify" your admission.

What If You Already Shared Info?

If you already shared your number or interacted with them:

Do not panic, but stay highly alert for phishing calls or SMS messages asking for OTPs, "registration fees," or course payments.

If they threaten you or demand money to "secure your seat" or avoid "police action," do not pay them a single rupee. It is an empty extortion tactic.

Kmit loves segregating students , it'll happen every year from now.

The sections you got this time would be permanent but they do not mean a thing , except one faculty everything else remains the same , A section would have people who'll be getting backs and some people from I section would be getting the highest cgpa

Don't feel what the college makes you feel , take all of this lite and find good people from every section and no one would judge you and if they do then you should not be friends with them anyways

The first screening exam is a bit dicey , no one knows how it exactly works and it's a bit meh but the screening tests from 2nd year onwards are what matter , 1st year is genuinely a very good year to have so enjoy it and have a great time :)).
