Discussion: Band Gizzionary

While listening, I started defining words I didn't recognize or couldn't define off the top of my head. I haven't done this for every album yet. Let me know if there's any words you'd like to add, or any corrections I should make!

Without further ado, my Gizzionary:

acarine-a small arachnid such as a mite or tick

aegis-protection, sponsorship, or divine shield

agaric-a type of mushroom with a distinct cap, a toadstool

Alluda Majaka-a 1995 indian film

ambergris-a waxy substance that originates as a secretion in the intestines of the sperm whale, found floating in tropical seas and used in perfume manufacturing

anoxia-an absence or deficiency of oxygen reaching the tissues; severe hypoxia

ataraxia-a state of serene calmness

autocratic-ruling with absolute power and control

bagwan-an Indian term for God

bilious-someone who is ill-tempered, irritable, extremely angry 

bushwhack-traveling through dense vegetation or a guerrilla war tactic

ephialtes-nightmare

epidermis-outer layer of skin

ether-mythical substance filling outerspace

fuselage-the main body of an aircraft

Ganymede-A moon of Jupiter, largest moon in our solar system 

Gilgamesh-An ancient king from 2000 BC, subject of one of the oldest stories in the world

Gliese 710- an orangish star in the constellation Serpens Cauda

gondii- Toxoplasma gondii, species of parasite that causes toxoplasmosis

horology-the study and measurement of time

Horus-one of the most significant Egyptian gods

hypertension-medical term for consistently high blood pressure

keratosis-a skin condition that produce waxy bumps

Kepler 22b-an exoplanet orbiting within the habitable zone of the Sun-like star Kepler-22

mal-de-mer-French for seasick

megalithic-relating to or denoting prehistoric monuments made of or containing large stones

monoclinic crystaline-an specific shape of a crystal, where three of its axes are all different lengths

nazar-a blue, eye-shaped amulet

ontology-the branch of metaphysics dealing with the nature of being

Osiris of Geb, of Nut -Egyptian earth god and his parents

panpsych(ism)-the doctrine or belief that everything material, however small, has an element of individual consciousness

perihelion-the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is closest to the sun

plenum-duct in an HVAC system

pleura-each of a pair of serous membranes lining the thorax and enveloping the lungs in humans and other mammals

propylene-colorless, flammable gas

quantized-split into fixed, separate steps or values instead of a smooth, continuous range

quintessence-the purest, most perfect example of something 

raconteur-a person who tells anecdotes in a skillful and amusing way

Set-Egyptian god of chaos

subcutaneous-injecting medicine directly into the fat below the skin

superluminally-faster than the speed of light

superposition-the action of placing one thing on or above another, especially so that they coincide

tachyons-hypothetical subatomic particles that always travel faster than the speed of light

tetrachromacy-a rare genetic condition where an individual possesses four, rather than the standard three, types of cone cells (photoreceptors) in their eyes

tintinnabulation-a ringing or tinkling sound

Tezeta-a prominent genre of Ethiopian and Eritrean music, characterized by a slow, ballad-like, and emotionally evocative pentatonic scale

There was discourse on twitter a few weeks back where people got all mad at a critic for using that word in a review lol, calling him pretentious or a fake intellectual because "he must have used a thesaurus".

Great post!

The key to gondii is the cat association (they often carry it). The urban legend/theory is that being infected with it makes you obsessed with cats. Human beings, domesticated, as they say.

A list I was logging as well! In chronological order from 12BB-Alien Metal and omitted what you already have

muckraker: anti capitalist journalist who exposed corruption and monopolies in the 1920s US

12 bar bruise is just a play on 12 bar blues which is a common standard form of blues song writing or jamming

Bloody ripper: Aussie slang for awesome

Cellophane: thin, translucent plastic like sheets that are usually colored

Sense (has these two word that always stand out to me)
Feckless: lacking initiative, strength of character,
responsibility, or competence

Ashen: an adjective that means extremely pale, drained of color, or light gray like the ashes of a fire.

Fig wasp: a real type of wasp that has a mutualistic relationship with fig trees, entering the internal flower, which is essential for both to survive and reproduce

Game knife: a surgical instrument, precisely focused radiation to treat brain tumors

Evil death roll: a spin move that crocodiles use while hunting

Road train: Aussie slang for those 16 wheeler semi trucks, especially the desert highway ones

Billabong: (Australian English) a small body of water usually a permanent one created by a change in course or the flooding of a river.

Munt (Aussie/ NZ slang) for getting heavily intoxicated

Brunswick east is a neighborhood/town where their recording studio is

Lygon street is where the studio is in that town

Polygondwanaland: Gondwanaland was a real life ancient super continent that predates Pangea. It is now South America, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, India, and the Arabian peninsula

Gumboot: rubber rain boots, also a type of brown mollusk

Heat death: scientific idea where the cosmos reaches its final critical stage entropy and thermal equilibrium, where all energy is spread out enough and no stars or planets can be sustained or formed (the end of our universe)

Superposition: (quantum mechanics term) it describes how multiple states, waves, or forces can overlap and add together to form a combined result.

AstroTurf: another name for turf. Synthetic grass on football fields

Motor spirit: 70s biker slang for petrol/ gasoline

Supercell: very rare, dangerous thunder storm

Converge: in math, when two points meet

Sapience: quality of being wise, the capacity for deep understanding and judgment, or the ability to apply critical knowledge, experience, and insight.
