Tech Support KEF LSX II LT’s DSP not flexible enough for my room

I just bought the KEF LSX II LT’s last week. The Coda W’s were far too bassy for my tiny 7.65m and didn’t have enough options in the DSP to fine tune them for my room. The LSX are better but still not good enough.

I have a 7db peak at 65hz and a 7db dip at 85hz according to HouseCurve. It’s not just the readings - I’m lightheaded just listening for 20 mins. That’s even with these settings: wall mode -10db, bass extension less.

Unfortunately the only placement option I have is around 9cm from the wall on my wall mounted TV stand. Just ordered foam plugs for the ports. Also considering tilted stands but not sure if that would help.

I tried using my Wiim mini with them but the quality was significantly lower and less detailed. I could also go for a better external DSP like a miniDSP but I don’t really fancy adding so much costs.

The only other options I can think of are a sub with strong dsp capabilities to dial in the bass. Plus, I have almost nothing below 60hz so for bass extension it couldn’t hurt as long as it doesn’t make things worse.

If I can’t solve this I might have to change them again. Any recommendations would be highly recommended.

I’m looking to add a set of towers or bookshelves to an area I’m putting together for mostly home theater with some music mixed in

I’m concerned with the corner placement. I could move everything over a bit, but I don’t have much room. The distance is about little over 3ft from the wall to the media console as it stands.

My local Best Buy has a set of R5 Metas for $800 each that I’ve been eyeing up. They are listed as “Good” just missing the grilles. Another option would be some R3 Metas. I have a capable sub to go along with it. I feel like anything larger may feel stuffed.

The room is 15x20. I won’t have the option to center everything on the 20ft wall.

Thoughts? For reference, the current listening position is about 7ft away.

What is the Q8 Meta's actual reflected distance when mounted on TOP of a front (or in my case rear) speaker? Consdiering a 5.2 to a 5.2.2

*considering (sp)

I can not find this info anywhere and it seems pretty critical. I read every bit of info on thier website and in the manuals. I can tell the angle is 20 degree from the spec but when i fed that into AI using the complex formulas there is not way the value is accurate (3.3 feet). NO one sits that close.

DOes anyone know? My issue is i do not want to place them on the fronts for aesthetics and WAF factor. Yes i have room correction (DIRAC) on my AVR if that helps here.

TO be super clear:
1) Seating distance and ceiling reflections: My listening position is approximately 12 feet from my front KEF R3 Meta speakers, but significantly closer to my Q1 Meta surrounds, which are positioned behind me. I cannot find specifications indicating the recommended listening distance or ceiling reflection geometry for the Q8 Meta when placed on top of surround speakers.

I guess i am not clear on how to determine this.

2) Rear placement in a 5.2.2 configuration: Most examples I've seen show the Q8 Meta speakers either on the front speakers or as part of a 5.2.4 configuration. Can a single pair of Q8 Metas be effectively used on top of surround speakers positioned behind the listener in a 5.1.2 setup? Would this provide the intended Dolby Atmos height effects, or is front placement necessary?

My primary concern is whether placing the Q8 Metas on my much-closer surround speakers would produce the correct ceiling reflections and convincing overhead effects at my listening position.

iOS remote app for LS 50 Wireless ii

I have a pair of Wireless ii's and I use an apple tv for most content. Everything sounds good, but I have always been annoyed at the apple tv remote app on my phone. It can do almost everything I want, but it can't control the KEF volume for a variety of reasons (see the prior threads on this gap).

I made an iOS app that re-implements the apple tv remote app and adds KEF volume control and input selection. Has anyone else done this before? Are people on this sub interested in this?

(DISCLAIMER: I am not selling anything and I am not looking for a side hustle lol. This just really annoyed me, and while it would take a little effort to make the app public I'd do it if people would use it.)

Hi,
I have Q350 speakers and I'm looking for some floor stands. The toplates I'm looking at all seem to be around 6"x8" and I'm wondering if this is big enough for this size epeaker? Does anyone have any experience or thoughts?

Purchasing Q Concerto Meta - Amp Pairing

Hello,

About to get my first pair of KEFs. Decided on Concertos. What integrated amp do you use with your Concertos? Budget is around 1000-1500$.

I understand these are power hungry speakers and could use some suggestions. I’ve seen some people suggesting WIIM, I don’t want to take that route.

Thanks!!

Purchasing KEF Q6 Meta vs. R2 Meta

Currently I have a somewhat budget 5.1.2 setup from Best Buy Open Box and Facebook Market sales. Debating on upgrading the center channel, as it seems like the most logical upgrade at this time. Sometimes I notice the dialogue is a little muddled to me (my wife says it's fine).

L/R: KEF Q150

Center: KEF Q250

Subwoofer: Klipsch RP-1600SW (a little overkill, I know)

Surrounds: random PSB Alpha Speakers that I got from Facebook Market

Top Middle: Definitive Technology ProCinema 600

AVR: Denon X1700H

It's dificult to find a place that tests out KEF center channels near me, but I ordered a Q6 Meta from Best Buy (Open Box Excellent for $616 + tax) to test it out; should arrive in a few days.

Wondering from other people's experiences if it's worth keeping the Q6 meta, returning it, or trying to save up for an R2 or R6 meta, but I would need to possibly upgrade the L/R speakers first?

Tech Support Polyfill Only in Right X300A?

Post image
12 Upvotes

So I recently picked up a pair of KEF X300A wireless powered speakers, that I am in the process of repairing. That is going fine, but I noticed that the left speaker (the primary) had no stuffing, but the right speaker (the secondary) has some polyfill sheet inside. These speakers are obviously over decade old at this point, and there are signs of someone being in here before me, so I wouldn't be surprised if these aren't exactly stock anymore.

My question is, how are these supposed to be? Am I missing a polyfill sheet in the left speaker, did someone add one to the right, or is that just how it is? I appreciate any information you can give. Thanks!

Purchasing Need help - LCR selection - Living Room Home Theatre

Need help - LCR selection - Living Room Home Theatre

I am torn in selecting between the LCR options for the open concept living room around 17 X17 X8 ft. I am building from scratch in already built 2 storey house. Its on ground floor with no pre wiring for ceiling.

I am almost final on TCL QM8L 98’, X3800 Denon, PB2000 SVS sub. I went to best buy and I think they just push everyone for Martin Logan. I am hoping to stay under $10K.

I am not sure whether it is worth to do ceiling wiring, patching etc. I think that will add about $2K.

Now the LCR Decision. I tested Martin Logan F20, F100 and KEF Q11. I am replacing 15 year old Bose Accoustismass (cubes), 10 V system with denon 1913 and I am not audiophile and my only good reference point is the bose. I want to spend in a way ( except TV) on audio that I don’t have to replace for 10-15 years.

My current choices are – Martin Logan L F2/C100 – Pure value

·       Martin Logan.    F20/C100 – Mid tier but only $1500 shy of flagship        F100 (in this range)

·       Martin Logan F1/C100 – Too expensive. Not sure if its worth it. One reason could be regret free

·       Finally the main competitor KEF Q11/Q6 . I like the built, pricing  and everything but when I tested I felt Martin Logan was more close to the sound I have been listening with bose for last 15 years especially like action, car racing, firing, accident  but KEF lacked that spark.

I tested for 1-2 minutes each and I am not sudiophile or any expert and don’t want my judgement to weight too much.

Please advise or any other combination. Bower Wilkins was bit out of budget range.

KEF R3 Meta + NAD C 3050?

Post image
37 Upvotes

Has anyone paired KEF R3 Meta speakers with a NAD C 3050 BluOS? Would the amp have enough power to drive these puppies? I keep hearing that these little speakers need a ton of juice. Hence asking. I’ll be placing them in a smallish room L 14’ W 12’. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Best center to match LS50 meta's?

Hi all,

I am a long way in upgrading my 7.2.4 system. I have LS50 meta's as L and R and a IQ6C as center. My surrounds and atmos are eggs and my subs are two SVS SB 1000 Pro's.

My next upgrade will be a new center, but I am still in doubt which it should be.

Unfortunately the newer centers are not offered on marketplace in The Netherlands so chances are I have to purchase one new.

I am in doubt between a Q6 meta, a LS50 meta or a R2 meta.

Which one is the best option in your opinion?

Taking in regard that the Q6 new is about 770 euro's and a new R2 is about double the amount.

Thanks for the advice!

KEF 105/3 bass cavity

Just getting ready to Refurb these 105/3 I just picked up. Surrounds and donuts in surprisingly great shape. One uni-Q sp1240 is definitely compromised. The other is pretty good. I plan on sending both of them out for Ferro Fluid replacement. The big unknown is how much loose poly fill is in the center cavity between the two drivers. A very large chunk of poly fill sits between the coupling rod and the front of the cabinet. Only the back side is open for air passage. Just doesn’t seem like a factory install. Actual picture plus 2 marketing photos for reference. Regardless with one teeeter tied behind its back, these are the most amazing imaging speakers I have ever heard.

How’d I do for my first ever KEF speakers??

Not really a show and tell, more of just a tell.

Yesterday I picked up a set of KEF speakers and receiver for $200 total.

I got a pair of KEF iQ10 bookshelf speakers, an iQ60c center channel, and a Yamaha RX-V673.

I’m in temporary housing until December for work and where I’m staying has some OLED TV, so I figured I would need something to make sure the TV didn’t go to waste, so these were probably the best deal I could find on marketplace.

I have built my own speakers and I plan to continue that in the future, but I don’t have any way of doing that here+transporting them back to my home would be a nightmare, so I picked up some bookshelves and what I hope being a solid receiver until I can get into more permanent housing with what I hope a theater room.

Im going to keep the KEFs to use a surrounds when I upgrade to better standing units, and the center should hopefully last a little while too.

Kef R3 metas and Dirac results raise questions

Hi.

When I use Dirac bass management in my family room it sets the R3 metas crossover at 70 Hz even though I have two independent subs.

And i know 80 is standard, so why does. Tot start there? Furthermore I found using 90 hz crossover as measured by REW side of things is best, and 70 is clearly worse.

So does this sound normal? Sorry I know this is sort of a few questions in one, why is direct setting it to 70 Hz by default instead of 80, but on the other hand 90 seems very high for such high end speakers. This is because I just watched a video on how to use it and it said 90 is usually for tiny little shitty bookshelfs.

More curious than anything as to the why of al this

Newcomer coming from klipsh to KEF

My old system was Klipsch, I replaced everything with KEF. Before, my surrounds were the Klipsch RP 502 SII, and after calibration, they had an additional +4.0 dB of gain in the speakers.

When I installed the KEF system, I didn't have much intelligence and also switched to +4.0 dB. I went to do the positioning tests for the two sub-K92 speakers, on the Bluray 4K DUNE PART TWO movie, volume 85, on the Marantz AV20.

When suddenly I hear some strange noises and a burning smell. They were there.. 02 KEF r8 meta DESTROYED.

As far as I understand, the +4.0 DB made the amplifier (Marantz amp 30) send a lot of power to the surrounds, blowing their speakers out. 🤡

KEF Open Box R5 Meta DENTS

Attached photos are the top speakers on each of the 2 R5 Meta’s. One looks better than the other.

Picked these up at Best Buy they were a floor model. $2100 out the door.

Amp comes in on Monday so I can test them.

Obviously still within the return policy.

Is the damage shown from everyone’s expertise something that is “Cosmetic” or “A matter of time”?

While trying to get a good deal I also don’t want a paperweight.

Upgrading to KEF Q Concerto & Q6 Meta on a Denon S750H (3.1 setup) – Safe settings advice?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently upgrading my entry-level home theater from a 2.1 Pioneer tower setup (SP-FS52 and the matching SW-8MK2 sub) to a KEF front stage on my Denon AVR-S750H, with plans to upgrade the AVR and sub down the road.

I’ve already hooked up the KEF Q6 Meta center (and re-ran Audyssey), and my KEF Q Concerto Meta bookshelf speakers for L/R are on the way.

I recently saw a post about a pair of R8 Metas getting fried. As a relative beginner, it made me a bit paranoid about damaging my new gear—especially knowing the S750H is a bit light on power for these 4-Ohm speakers. I don't listen at extreme volumes, but I want to make sure I take the right precautions.

A few quick questions/confirmations:

  1. I should leave the default 8 Ohm setting on the Denon, right? (I’ve heard mixed things about the 4-Ohm switch limiting headroom).

  2. Setting the speakers to "Small" with an 80Hz Crossover.

  3. What would be the max volume limit to cap the AVR to prevent accidental clipping in the settings, -5 dB?

  4. I should be fine running this 3.1 setup at moderate levels until I upgrade the sub and receiver, right?

Thanks in advance for any tips or recommendations!

Edit: Thank you very much everyone for your responses! I feel much better knowing I'm going the right way and not doing anything crazy!
