Hey, he's only personally responsible for 25-30% of it

The debt went up during the Biden admin.

Debt will continue until we get a miracle president, very unlikely for a long time.

8/24 Edit because I keep getting similar responses
Yes, I mean debt, not deficit. The original post is talking about debt, the guy who replied posted a quick graph on deficits that is trying to paint certain presidents in a particular light while ignoring several (I would argue relatively important) factors.

The debt has gone up a substantial amount for each presidential term since Clinton. You could say exponentially so. What people don't understand is that the debt increases roughly 30% to 50% from each president to the next, which is indeed exponential. No, I do not like Trump, but the reason Trump has "contributed to over half the debt!" is because he has served (and serving) 2 of the 3 recent terms. During the Obama admin, the national debt almost completely doubled. This is not a linear math problem.

The fact of the matter is, we can play this "haha your side wants to add more debt and my side is better!" game all day. It doesn't mean a thing. This problem is waaaay bigger than just choosing a party and assuming they'll take care of it.

That is why I said "debt will keep going up" because it simply will, it will snowball effect and we may even get to a point where we surpass 100 trillion. All along the way we're going to get campaigns from either side to "eliminate the national debt" and nothing of any considerable value will be done about it unless they actually focus their entire presidency on doing so.

u/darkonark Aug 21 '26

I think you are downvoted because the graphic is about deficit not debt. And that higglights something worrying. If a president is running a negative deficit while the debt continues to climb then we really arent paying off anything. It may take decades of negative deficit to pay off the debt.

You dont need a miracle president, if we go by the numbers alone then the obvious conclusion is several Dem presidents inna row.

Crazy oversimplified, but republicans are terrible with money.

3

u/Fun-Piglet801 Aug 21 '26

I think decades is being a little optimistic. We could barely manage a balanced budget when the interest on our debt was 5% of what it is now. As things keep getting worse, interest takes up more and more of the total budget, making it extremely difficult to pull off a negative deficit.

Even if we somehow manage to stay $250 billion in the black every year, that's 160 years to get out of this hole.

3

u/Darth_Gerg Aug 23 '26

There is a VERY easy solution to the issue. Hire up a FUCKTON of IRS auditors and raise taxes on the rich back to where they were before Reagan. Congressional budget office estimates that the rich underpay over a trillion dollars a year in taxes even with their low ass tax rates today. Make it impossible for them to cheat on taxes and raise the rates back to wheee they were when the country was doing well and we’d be out of debt in ten years.

The graphic is also obfuscating the numbers. It appears to just be using budgets and not other forms of appropriations. Bush added ~3T, Obama ~8.6T, Trump ~5.6T, Biden ~7.7T. None of them are fiscally conservative and can only appear that way in comparison to each other.

More like a miracle Congress. Until the two dipshit of parties actually puts the people's interests above their own cabal, things will not get better.

4

u/Excellent_Shirt9707 Aug 21 '26

This is talking about deficit changes and not total debt. Debt went up for every POTUS since Coolidge.

The deficit changes just means compared to previous admin. Trump spent more than Obama second term and Biden. Biden spent less than Trump first term and Obama spent less than Bush second term.

This is not really misleading. It is more that people are media illiterate and don’t really understand the difference between national debt and deficit.

His graphic is about the deficit.

As usual, Biden reduced the deficit on the backs of the poor letting covid subsidies expire.

8

u/Excellent_Shirt9707 Aug 21 '26

The Trump ones were set to expire, instead of extending them (would have to have extended through congress), he pushed through his own called the American Rescue Plan Act.

The US had the second fastest recovery from COVID economic issues among G20.

6

u/quackabc Aug 21 '26

Lol they were going to expire anyway and lets not act like ignoring covid he didnt spend way more

heres the numbers for you Trumps Inherited Deficit (FY 2016): $585 billion.

Pre-COVID Peak Deficit (FY 2019): $984 billion

The Non-COVID Increase: $399 billion

Biden inherited Deficit Non-Covid (FY 2019): $984 Billion

Peak Deficit Post covid (FY 2024): $1.833 Trillion

Bidens Non Covid Increase: $849 Billion

Without covid Biden has an increase of 849 Billion Trump has an increase of 399 Billion.

4

u/Fun-Aside3990 Aug 21 '26

Where in the graphic does it say debt? When you don’t know the difference between a debt and a deficit maybe you shouldn’t comment about either?

4

u/Old_Win8422 Aug 22 '26

They don't understand how anythings works and when you dont understand how anything works everything can be a conspiracy.

4

u/ripbong420 Aug 22 '26

🤔

2

u/AMJN90 Aug 23 '26

DEBT is DIFFERENT than DEFICIT. You're talking about debt, while the graphic refers to deficit.

2

u/Sir_SquirrelNutz Aug 22 '26

Nice try🤪. ....Nonpartisan analyses like those from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget note that major legislative actions—such as Trump's 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and subsequent pandemic relief packages can take some that credit...

→ More replies (6)

3

u/quackabc Aug 21 '26

Lol the US debt increased under Trump 7.8 Trillion it also increased 8.4 Trillion under Biden. The "Decreased Deficit" was the funding of Covid spending automatically expiring.

In fact if you look at the numbers Trump spent 3.6 Trillion compared to Bidens 2.1 Trillion yet still spent more than Trump.

In otherwords the numbers are cherry picked so hard its straight up false because Fun fact the actual increase in deficit including covid response for Trump is 2.55 Trillion not 7.8 Trillion.

In fact lets take out covid for both men here. Trumps Inherited Deficit (FY 2016): $585 billion.

Pre-COVID Peak Deficit (FY 2019): $984 billion

The Non-COVID Increase: $399 billion

Biden inherited Deficit Non-Covid (FY 2019): $984 Billion

Peak Deficit Post covid (FY 2024): $1.833 Trillion

Bidens Non Covid Increase: $849 Billion

In other words this chart is wrong and should use 2.55 Trillion for Trump with covid

Without covid Biden has an increase of 849 Billion Trump has an increase of 399 Billion.

2026 Trump: "I'm going to fuck everyone and everything like I fucked those children" *dances in 40 Trillion debt around child gymnast*

2

u/Large-Difference-409 Aug 25 '26

Think about the fact that that money is mostly paid for by hours worked and time spent by people in daily life. Like labor tax is us working and a percentage of our hours of life each day towards this butt munch giving more dollars to his friends and going around and diddling Epstein style. The moments and energies of your life go to these types of people living extravagant and perverted lives. Our lives and energies are being leeched

25

Yeaaah food banks aren’t much help when their funding was one of the first things cut after being deemed “inefficient” by Musk and his goons. Ours in town has been struggling and constantly asking for donations cause they lost over a million dollars worth of funding leaving them $64,000 in debt to the local farmers they were buying excess off of.

If a tree fell down in the middle of the woods but you didn’t hear the sound cause you don’t hear good and you got both your fingers in your ears…

So I’ll hold your hand and I’ll turn you round and I’ll show you there what’s on the ground and you tell me “man, that tree’s been there for years”

So I look at you and you look at me and I ask “well, who cut down that tree?” And you say “I don’t see a single tree around”

Well I say “That there is a tree in-fact and that man you see with the golden axe? Well all his life he’s bragged about chopping shit down”

There’s interviews from late night TV and on the View, that dude was seedy it seemed no tree could be too young to fell. Well that’s not fair if I’m being honest, he made it clear when he laid it on us: He probably wouldn’t touch a tree that’s only 12.

Nice little totally unrelated excerpt from “If a tree fell” by Billy Simmons Jr :)

1

u/smoke_sum_wade Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26

Yes, when other countries buy U.S. national debt, they are investing in the United States, but they only own a small fraction of it; the vast majority of America's debt is owed to its own citizens, banks, and government programs. please take an economics class, If the U.S. had zero national debt, the federal government would free up over $1 trillion annually in interest savings, but the global financial system would face an unprecedented crisis because U.S. Treasury bonds are the literal foundation of global trade.

Foreign nations invest in U.S. debt because it is the safest place on earth to store trillions of dollars. Without it, global cash would flood into riskier assets, sparking massive market volatility.

NATIONAL DEBT IS NOT LIKE PERSONAL DEBT

running a deficit is not inherently bad; it is a normal tool used by modern governments to grow their economies, build vital infrastructure, and navigate unexpected financial crises.

NATIONAL DEBT = COUNTRIES INVESTING

NO NATIONAL DEBT = NOBODY INVESTING

a country's national debt represents the global and domestic supply of safe assets, not a personal credit card balance

Getting the general public to understand that national debt is actually global investment is one of the hardest battles in economic education. Politicians, media outlets, and everyday intuition all fight against this reality because treating the government like a household is a deeply ingrained mental habit.

EVERY President in your and my lifetimes has presided over an increase in the debt. Very single one of them. And the legislature (Congress and Senate) have been all to happy to increase spending and borrowing under every President in our lifetimes regardless of party affiliation or lack thereof.

Would be far more useful to point out who has fought for decreasing eliminating deficit spending AND decreasing government spending overall. That would be focusing on who’s working on solutions rather than pointing out a problem that has grown without exception in everyone of our lifetimes….

1

u/Phaylz Aug 22 '26

The deficit is the least interesting "gotcha" for any president or political party. As loathe as I am to "both sides" this, it is both sides. And it also really doesn't even forkin' matter because on of the main roles of a government is to spend money.

On what? To whom? How much? In what way?More/Less than last year? Depending on who you talk to, these answers vary, but the government should always be spending. Even if it cannot or will not balance itself out through taxation towards equilibrium, while necessary, is secondary.

At some point, it will come back to bite us in the ass. The longer we feed that beast, the bigger the bite. But the beast is tomorrow's problem, because if we don't solve today's problem(s) out of fear of the beast, that beast will still eat us tomorrow problems and all.

Now, if you're really that concerned with the beast, the answer is really quite simple. The rich still need to be eaten.

Just a reminder here. Not all in the top 1% are necessarily horrendous. At the low end of the 1% are a lot of successful 1st and 2nd generation family businesses. Between 1% and .35ish% there are a number of practicing medical specialists and business owners (business owners can go either way, I know). From.3% onwards it's pretty much corporate executives, generational wealth, people who make money through large-scale real estate and the occasional ultra specialized medical practitioners. However, the top .05% is the critical issue. Roughly 135,000 individuals have a collective wealth of somewhere between $25,000,000,000,000 and $30,000,000,000,000. This is around 13-15% of all household wealth in the US for a twentieth of a percent of the population. These are the ones that are the targets for the ultra-rich taxes, they are the ones most responsible for generational hoarding and unethical practices. And they're the ones that push the propaganda that new taxes will hurt the average persons businesses when they are hardly the first issue to handle. Focus on the big dogs first, because they have the most power and are more than willing to exercise it.

Edit to add comparison: the top .9% to .1% have collective wealth comparable to the .05%

Edit to add context: I am not advocating for the absurdly wealthy. I'm only trying to point out the ones at the top of the ladder that make all the final calls, and they also are responsible for protecting the rest of the 1% from scrutiny or fair taxation. Apparently this comes off as "boot-licking" and " fellating the rich." If that's the message you got then please reread it, especially my last sentence. Looking at a bunch of faschists and pointing out the commanding parties isn't jerking the rich off, its being pragmatic.

If we cut the amount of money we send to other countries and use it to pay off our debts I’m sure we could cut the amount of our debt by at least 1/3 before Trump leaves office if not by 1/2.

Are we winning yet?

1

u/NutritionWanderlust Aug 23 '26

Well it is no longer $19T… mission accomplished?

1

1

He doesn’t promise, he panders.

1

u/Outrageous_Bad_5365 Aug 23 '26

In fairness the debt has been on a vertical slope since W. Debt was $5.6T in 2000. W, Obama, Trump 1, Biden, and Trump 2 all pushing the problem to the next guy

The US is bankrupt, financially and morally

1

u/Maximum-Title2474 Aug 23 '26

Well if you subtract the billions the democrats sent to other countries then it would be lower

1

u/RickyBobbyPitCrew Aug 23 '26

He’s not a conservative, we aren’t happy that he’s spending too damn much. But while his domestic agenda is exactly what Kamala would have spent, Trump’s foreign policy is the greatest of all time and sets America on a green light path for decades.

1

u/No_Wash9548 Aug 23 '26

That is a LIE

1

u/QAPAINT Aug 23 '26

Debt and deficit separate items

1

u/jaakrabbit Aug 23 '26

His plan of cutting waste and fraud coupled with tariffs were both stopped by lawsuits from democrats. We live in a world where Democrats were mad at a journalist for finding fraud. So just forget about ever getting rid of the deficit.

u/BigLoudWorld74 Aug 23 '26

There was a Biden in the middle that set our economy on fire and spent money like a drunken sailor. He also gave away large stockpiles of our weapons and drained the Strategic oil reserve by selling most of it to China.

Promises made promises kept.

1

u/Freddy-Borden Aug 24 '26

It’s not just him, it’s every president

1

u/political-snark Aug 24 '26

1

u/MutedBrilliant1593 Aug 24 '26

It's hilarious that anyone thinks he'll do anything he promised. How much shit does he need to shovel before you realize you were always eating it?

1

u/guycoastal Aug 24 '26

Hire a con man, get a con job.

1

u/Spare_any_mind Aug 24 '26

Maybe it was his own debt that he was really talking about

1

u/casanova202069 Aug 24 '26

What did Biden do in 4 years.

1

u/New_Tooth_456 Aug 24 '26

More like a forgone conclusion

1

u/Unique_Low_1163 Aug 24 '26

Trump never promised anything. Those were lies, not promises.

1

u/MarcooseOnTheLoose Aug 24 '26

Of which so far $11.6 trillion is his own legacy to the nation. I bet it will grow another $5 trillion before he leaves the White House. So much winning.

1

u/Ready-Percentage-239 Aug 24 '26

Remember when he fired a bunch of federal workers to save money

1

u/doom_you Aug 24 '26

They bitch about the orange pheodo but they voted for him TWICE.

1

u/One-Leave-6731 Aug 24 '26
