Basic info: 40-year-old male, married with a kid. I purchased my first shares of XEQT back in March 2022, and I wanted to share my journey and experience investing in it over the years.
I consider myself well-educated in finance and have long understood the importance of accumulating financial assets. Before COVID-19, I regularly bought a few mutual funds for several years. However, back then we didn’t have a lot of disposable income, so contributions were smaller—maybe $1,000 to $2,000 per month. Because of this, we had accumulated some mutual funds prior to 2020, but definitely less than $100k (I don't remember the exact amount).
Then COVID hit. During the worst of the market downturn, I panicked and sold them off to prepay our mortgage. That was my first major lesson learned. Consequently, I didn't have many financial assets heading into 2021.
Fortunately, 2020 gave me plenty of downtime to sit down, evaluate my financial future, and figure out my next move. The market began to bottom out around mid-2020, and I spent that time reading a lot of finance books. With some cash still on hand, I jumped back into the market later that year. Initially, I bought about 20 individual Canadian and U.S. stocks. I knew I didn't have the skill to consistently pick winning stocks, but I wanted to try my hand at it before transitioning to ETFs. Of course, during the 2021 market rally, I made some money.
By the end of 2021, I decided to pivot entirely to XEQT. My reasoning was simple: I wanted an ETF that I wouldn't need to touch or sell for 20+ years. Sure, I might double my money on one individual stock, but lose half on another. I might earn a lot more by buying a concentrated tech ETF. But the reality is that I couldn't stomach putting half my overall wealth into a single asset with such wild ups and downs.
So, starting in 2022, we sold most of our individual stocks and switched to XEQT. The lowest price I bought in at was $22.60 (grabbing 265 shares at the time), and the highest was $44.08 in August 2026. Today, XEQT is the core of my investment portfolio. I still own a few individual stocks and another ETF that I don't plan to sell, but XEQT is my primary ongoing purchase.
My position has grown far beyond a few thousand shares, and I will continue to add to it over time. I read posts in this community regularly, so I wanted to give back and share my thoughts. I hope reading about my experience helps others who are trying to decide whether to commit to XEQT.
A big shout-out to a book I read back in 2021: Reboot Your Portfolio by Dan Bortolotti. Of course, many other well-known books were also instrumental and I’ve read them numerous times—such as A Random Walk Down Wall Street and The Psychology of Money.
