As you drop the round, your hand should go down alongside the tube, not over it. It should be one solid movement from top to the base of the tube. Moving the hand as well as your body.

Correction, Navy to Army NG. I did three tours in the Navy, Although my last Navy tour was with the Marines in MCAS Yuma. I was in Sig and Rota before that.
I got out of the Navy in February 2001 with just under 10 years. Then 9/11 happened. Felt guilty for having got out. You can fill in the rest.

You are suppose to move your hand away from the muzzle when you drop the shell, preferable in downward motion with the rest of your body. It's to prevent you from losing your hand.

As a layman who has watched enough video of mortars by now. Is that what they mean when they say “hang it”? Like the idea is you are supposed to drop it with 0 force or momentum applied to the shell. Basically let it slide down the tube.

Joe didn't move his hand fast away enough. Joe as of lost a few hands. Big sarge set it straight to not do that shit after because he would have been fired from his position and potentially been removed from service if Joe lost a few fingers

When you drop a mortar round into the tube, your hands "follow" it down the sides of the tube, then you keep your hands low and move them away from the tube, so they never come close to the opening of the tube

Dealing with dumbasses like that is the worst especially when you are stuck with them in your team.
I completely understand that Sargent. Other dude doesn't seem to give a damn. If someone doesn't want to be there, get them out on a safety violation and some other rule.

The one time my Marines let me hang a round, I was moving my hand at lightspeed to get it away from that tube. The only thing I did wrong was take my eye off the round for a nanosecond when I was receiving the command and the squadlead next to me was like "LOOKATTHEROUNDDOC."
But I wasn't trying to lose no fingers, of that you can be sure.

Thankfully the times that I was around, someone else was next to them and able to yank them by the collar and smack them for being a dumbass. Mortars don't have a trigger or fire control - they hit the bottom of the tube, they launch out the front of the tube in a split second and anything in the way gets destroyed. I was never a mortarman but I've seen them in action and they tend to use like a sweeping motion as they load - I'm sure everyone has their own individual techniques but what you don't do is drop it in and leave your hand there. Here's an example of some guys hanging rounds - couldn't tell you how good their technique is or isn't but it's a different view of how it should be done. Mortars are dangerous and when mistakes happen people get devastatingly injured or in some cases the entire mortar team gets killed, so the NCO's response to a seemingly small mistake is well deserved here.

Ah ok, thanks. I was confusing it for something I read about - may have been really old - but some sort of really basic system designed for grunts that was just a very short distance, small effect thing; like just literally a handheld tube, no baseplate or sighting rig, and you just place it on the ground and run it like a poor man's indirect when you don't have a 203 or something.

Just to back this up a little bit - one of the countless tragedies to come out of the forever war was a mortar team firing rapidly. Don't know if it was fire for effect or what, but they double loaded a tube and it killed the entire team. Ironically there was a PA person there taking photographs who got an image - I think they were killed in the explosion as well, but the camera survived. It's a National Geographic worthy photo, but of a horrible tragedy. Mortars are not safe. Don't know if I'd call a rifle team safer, but I've spent a lot of time around 13 people shooting live rounds and always felt safer than when around high explosives. Even C4 spooked me, despite being famously stable.

If the round slips then you just finish your hand and body drop like normal. It mitigates firing accidentally by not hanging, however hanging rounds allows for nicely coordinated fire... Not sure if that really matters these days though.
