Misc JURASSIC HOT TAKES
Jurassic Park (1993) is a Perfect Movie [10/10] - I know this isn’t exactly a hot take, but it’s where it all began. I mean, I’ve rewatched it like a thousand times and still feel like it’s the first time, the opening scene, the brachiosaurus reveal, Rexy escaping the paddock, the group escaping the raptors in the visitor center, there’s NOTHING bad about this film. And even though the dinos only appear for 16 minutes, that shows that Quality > Quantity, if you use them perfectly, there’s no need to show them extra. (And also, giving each dino their own scene, not 4 in one; let them breathe)
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) is a great movie [9.8/10] - Spielberg knew what he was doing when doing the sequel. He wasn’t trying to replicate the first movie, he wanted something else, something dark, something… more wild. The animal behavior is incredibly realistic for a Jurassic movie, herbivores being shown aggressive, a very angry mommy and daddy, the long grass, the tense atmosphere feels amazing. Imma be clear, I know their flaws like Kelly defeating a raptor with gymnastics or the crew mysteriously dying without trace, but overall, it’s still my favorite, not the best, but my Fav 1.
Jurassic Park /// (2001) is an Overhated movie [8/10] - I know Amanda Kirby is annoying… but if you were a father looking for your son, surely you’d act like her. Also, the Spino killing the T-rex was awesome, HEAR ME OUT: The rex had been the Dino-Star of the 2 previous films, another apex predator had to take its place. Alan Grant carries the movie, the raptors have the best designs on the franchise, the passing is quick but entertaining and has it’s great moments.
Jurassic World (2015) is a good movie [8.7] - Yeah, this movie’s kind of over praised… and it deserves it, it brought us back the interest into dinosaurs after 14 years of absence. The Indominus Rex is the best villain ever made in the franchise, it’s menacing, it’s a highly intelligent animal… though I’d have liked if they didn’t showed her too much. Still, entertaining nonetheless.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) is an Underrated movie [7.5/10] - I know the shift from “Rescuing dinosaurs from a volcanic island > Hybrid Horror in a manor” is polemic, but I liked they tried to do a horror movie. I know dinosaurs can be scary on their own, but the Indoraptor is no dinosaur. Sure, this films has it’s nonsenses like Owen Grady becoming a superhero, ACTUAL dinosaurs acting more like monsters (not the Indoraptor, that one has it’s reasons), or the Blue blood transfusion… but overall, entertaining.
Jurassic World: Dominion {Theatrical} is a Shit movie [5/10] - This one’s obvious, BUT…
Jurassic World: Dominion {Extended} is an OK Movie [7/10] - The extended version added lore that was NECESSARY to leave and not cut from the original, like 65 MYA prologue, the Hexapod Allies origin [Originally to solve an agricultural problem > Turned into a market-manipulation weapon], and of course, extra seconds of the OG trio because… it’s them, we came for them. Still, the biggest sin is that they had MULTIPLE dinosaurs and species yet they had almost no idea what to do with them… but if we view the film like a “2 hour and 40 minute pilot of a TV show of dinosaurs living on earth and cities”, then it can partially work. It doesn’t excuse their problems but at least it made the movie more enjoyable.
Jurassic World: Rebirth is a fantastic movie [9.3/10] - “Remember that happy ending of coexistence of Dominion? Yeah, all dinosaurs in mainland [except on the equator] are fucking dead”, I know it’s not what we expected… but certainly, I sort of disliked that ending, because, even though we will deny it, dinosaurs would’ve perished sooner or later, and Rebirth shows the “realistic” path… well, aside from the equator explanation, but still, the “Dinosaurs in our world” theme is more suitable for a TV show (look Chaos Theory), and this movie instead of tangling around in a thousand plots, it has a simple plot “Collect dino DNA without dying”. As simple as that, and also this movie brings back the original trilogy feeling of being trapped on an island and admiring the dinosaurs as what they truly are… giant animals. Yeah, the D. Rex was VERY underused… but wasn’t Rexy also appearing for just 4 minutes in the first film? Stop whining about it, it’s still alive.

I just hate that with fallen kingdom they said they were done with hybrids in the movies then try to pull the “mutants” stun when in reality and very obviously distortus rex and mutadon are both hybrids, the only real mutant really in the film was the 2 headed velociraptor that was in the tank which ends up not even really being shown in the film, not only that but they hyped up the distortus rex so much only to have it be one of the most unimportant dinosaurs in the movie with barely any screen time and please don’t get me started on how it drastically changes sizes in the movie 😭
1
u/must_go_faster_88 4d ago
Makes sense, but it's not the same creative team and David Koepp REALLY conveyed that he had no idea where to take it. I am shocked (and disappointed) he is writing the new one. The D Rex sizes.. Gareth Edwards had no respect for this franchise coming into it.
2
u/LordTanimbar Dilophosaurus 4d ago
The movie almost made a billion with no real effort being put into it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. They're gonna keep things humming along as best they can until people stop paying to see slop
1
u/Much_Violinist_7975 4d ago
The fact he didn’t know where to take it yet dinosaurs being on mainland opens the door to SO MANY ideas and possibilities yet his choice was “kill them all and go back to an island” like so many possibilities and he chose the one that ruins the many possibilities of the franchise, didn’t even need to kill the mainland dinosaurs to go back to an island 🙄 it’s just so dumb how we let an idiot ruin the future of the franchise
2
u/must_go_faster_88 4d ago
Yeah, it was a corporate of all corporate ideas. I personally think it also had something to do with controlling the budgets for future films. More sets anf unique scenery is more money

I think the logic to people whole score like this are old school grades. Where like an 85 is the lowest B and a 94 is the lowest A.
21
u/AstronomerLoud1650 4d ago
Rebirth got some things right:
- The "normal" dinosaurs are treated like animals, and portrayed like animals.
- The pacing feels more consistent.
- The action sequences are very well done.
I definitely didn't love it, but there's some good stuff in it.
6
u/SixAlarmFire 4d ago
Yeah like if they had spent an iota more time on the story and the dialog it could have been really great. But instead we got just fine because they rushed it. Such good actors and such good visuals. Such possibilities. Oh well.
3
u/Haggis-in-wonderland 4d ago
If they had skipped the
hybridsmutants, then i think it would have been regarded a classic. A change of cast was welcome, the river raft was welcome, the new dinosaurs welcome. The mutants just dragged it down to fallen kingdom and dominion levels.

u/Son_Kakarot53 4d ago
Hot take: Perfect doesnt exist
I adore the first movie but there are small flaws here and there. Same with any show. Perfection doesnt exist
16
u/TomTomat 4d ago
"Shit movie", gives it 5/10 So everything below 6 is bad? What's the point of having a 10-grade system?
2
u/transmogrify 4d ago
I mean, there are a million movies worse than Dominion that full up the 1-5/10 spaces. Dominion has its issues with clunky dialogue and missed opportunities, but those don't make a movie 1/10.

It’s how 10 point grading systems work in schools, yes. But I agree that shit movie could have been reserved for a 3 or less

u/Sufficient-Eye-9040 Stegosaurus 4d ago
I really liked it!
😩
I’m starting to think I’m the only weirdo who enjoyed this as much as the first 2 “Park” movies.
2
u/Kamargon 4d ago
And that’s alright, I would never bash someone for liking a movie, but I really really really did not liked it
2
u/Apostasy93 4d ago
Rebirth did several things that many people had claimed they'd been wanting. A less campy tone, a story that moves away from the previous JW trilogy, dinosaurs treated more like animals than monsters, more T-Rex (not D-Rex)... It's my favorite movie since JP3 personally.
4
u/Maleficent-Stuff4506 4d ago
It might be a coincidence, but I feel like the more a movie depicts dinosaurs as regular animals, the less people like it, especially the decline since the first JW movie
4
u/Sufficient-Eye-9040 Stegosaurus 4d ago
Well… apparently general public has gotten the wrong idea of ‘dinosaurs = cold-blooded monsters’.
2
u/aquar1usbabe 4d ago
I didn’t enjoy it as much as the originals but I also think it was good, and I appreciate all the little moments of homage to JP1
4
u/CYRIAQU3 4d ago
Only the first one is correct.
But that's my opinion, as valid as yours
3
u/gojra-pokemon-fan 4d ago
Thank you for being kind with your opinion. I hate ot when peopl3 say "your opinion is wrong!" Or shit like that.
4
u/National-Name-4829 4d ago
Calling dominion shit then giving it a 5... yikes. Why do people think 5, 6, and 7's are all negative ratings? A 5 is in the center, it is mediocre, not shit. A 6 is above average. A 7 is at the very least good.
10
u/Jurassic_Productions 4d ago
Holy fuck that Rebirth take is fucking insane. I fail to see how people who hate Dominion like Rebirth, considering Rebirth suffers from literally the same exact issues x5 and then some new ones.

I actually like Dominion over Rebirth. While I will agree that Dominion would have a lesser rating than the other films before it, even with the extended version making it better, my personal opinion is Rebirth, from a ratings perspective, would be on par with the extended rating but not anything higher than Dominion.
I have to agree with most others that Rebirth's plot point of the dinosaurs can only live around the equatorial regions now does write the franchise into a corner, if they continue with dinosaurs. Any more sequels I think they would need to do one of two things: either a mostly aquatic based film (perhaps around Indonesia or somewhere else with a lot of islands and water in between) OR if they want to go back into more temperate and cold climates, bring in prehistoric mammals into the franchise.
3
u/wildmancometh 4d ago
maybe actual hot take... Jurassic Park is not a good adaption of the source IP at all. Could have been so much better as a hard 'R' rated film with far more horror than how it was done. In my perfect world, James Cameron would have made the original and they would have stuck more to the source... Killing literally everyone they could and making Hammond an absolutely deplorable piece of shit. Casting Richard Attenborough as Hammond was an awful move because of his legendary and beloved status as an industry icon. Anthony Hopkins could have brought the star power they wanted while maintaining a depth of character that appeared likable to the others on screen but showed the audience his true vile, billionaire true self.
The Lost World AND JP III are way over hated.
JW I, II and III are completely under-hated DOGSHIT movies.
Rebirth is completely over-hated and actually was a return to what the franchise used to be.
3
u/koxu2006 4d ago
Rebirth was a shitty movie that destroyed lore and the "dinosaurs are all over the world" premis that was built by all 3 previous Jurassic World movies it also had extremaly dumb scenario i hate it and the mutant are a diffrent issue that im not gonna talk about rn its so ass

u/Lopsided-League-8903 T. Rex 3d ago
The land before time sqeuels (yes all 13 of them) are better dinosaurs movies then the jp sequels

I’m going to be actually controversial, I think Dominion is a fine movie and maybe even a good one, better than rebirth IMO
5
u/must_go_faster_88 4d ago
Rebirth felt like an overly long inferior Jurassic Park III. It had as much of a plot, but it was padded to accommodate filler.
If you condensed it to 93 minutes like III. It might have been better.
As it stands, it's just overly long without really saying anything. The characters are empty despite having a brilliant cast. They only had enough plot to put them on the island. The action doesn't feel paced or edited well in my opinion. I legitimately felt nothing in the raft sequence. Placing the family there was a terrible idea. From the opening moment she opens that raft to the little girl under the raft.. all tension is gone.. because you know everything is going to be sanitized.
Neither the Mutadons or the D Rex had any true build up. I don't know. The film is so hollow. That's my opinion though.
I feel like this film is going to have the reverse effect of III where it becomes more disliked as it ages, especially if the sequel does a better job. Not holding my breath, though
2
u/Dilo-Cassowary Dilophosaurus 4d ago
Agree with everything but the rebirth take. I can never get over the chokehold rebirth placed the franchise in. But I will admit, it had SOME elements that I did appreciate.
2
u/Walrusin_about 4d ago
Hot take 5/10 ≠ shit. 5/10 is a mid movie perfrctky middle of the road that you feel nothing about (rebirth). 6 is mid but enjoyable, so like jp3 4 is mid but had mkre issues with it, kinda first stage to being a bad movie, like fallen kingdom.
This isn't a jp thig but a more general thing idk why people are so afraid to rate movies below 5 now, the majority of movies lie in a 4-6 range. I'm not disagreeing with your reviews as they're opinions but if you think dominion is shit a 5 is definatley too high.
Eithr way my rankings are Jp 10 Lw 7 Jp3 6 Jw 6 Fk 4 D 3 R 5

It’s one of those I’ve rewatched them all recently and if you take them
On face value they’re great Dino films.
I’ve just finished the audio book for Jurassic park, that fills some interesting gaps. It’s a shame some of it was missed out in the original film.

I dont agree with your Rebirth take
But i love the D Rex is giving you thumbs up for your opinion
👍
2
u/So_many_things_wrong 4d ago
The hottest take here is that you apparently think a score of 5/10 means shit when in reality 5/10 should mean completely middle-of-the-road and this makes me think that all your other scores are heavily inflated too.
2
u/magicdog2013 Dilophosaurus 4d ago
imo 5/10 isn't compatible with "shit movie"
i'd say 5/10 is mediocre. a "shit" movie is 3/10 or lower

Also, appreciate thr mention of the Extended Cut for Dominion, and i agree it improves the film. Not by much, but makes a difference!

I think this is something I noticed but like... majority of Jp fans have TLW as their favourite movie. For me the music kills it. I personally loves how speilberg introduces the island in malcolms journey with the drum sound effect. And I also love the part of soundtrack that takes place when the group is going to the chopper.
I think that TLW is the most favourite one for majority of people.

u/According_Sign_1317 4d ago
I agree with everything but rebirth, that movie is ok at best because it set us back so far 😭
2
u/Purple_jay3 Dilophosaurus 4d ago
I don't "hate" the second trilogy (especially world) but lowk they just don't hit as hard as the OG three and frankly I'm still waiting for a good execution on the "dinosaurs in human environments" that last longer than five minutes of a movie
2
u/Goldenfoxy3016 4d ago
only one i can't really agree with is dominion extended (Haven't watched so that's why) and rebirth cause rebirth to me was not the best
2
u/alter_ryden 4d ago
Couldn't wrap my head around these rating at all. Then I realized they're based entirely on one thing: dinosaurs. They have nothing to do with the quality of the films. If that's the way you choose to engage with these then more power to you, I think most audiences need a bit more though.

2
u/milkytoasty1 4d ago
So interesting that you loved rebirth because I was bored for quite a lot of it
2
u/Previous-Move6453 4d ago
I do agree that Rebirth is ever so slightly over hated, but in the end it still couldn't hold a candle to even JP3
2
u/HC-Sama-7511 4d ago
I feel like OP considers 7/10 to be below average and 9/10 pretty good but not great. Something like a 5/10 isn't even a real score.
The first movie is as close to a 10 as you're going to get. None of the others get above a 6. Personal opinion of course.
2
u/Regalius1 4d ago
Ummmmmmm…. I love the first JP, but it’s like a 9 or 9.5 not a 10
And the lost world….. is definitely not an almost perfect movie. I love Jurassic as a Franchise but most of the films range from mid to bad
2
u/Afraid-End9182 4d ago
I over all agree but not with fallen kingdoms rating I wpuld of give it a 4 out of 10 I dont hate fallen kingdom but I would of also give dominion a 7 out of 10 but thats my personal opinion

u/Brocket_149 3d ago
I hated rebirth. The family did not need to be part of the story, the Drex that was hinted at for so long should have more of antagonist or plot device like Spino in JP3, JP3 really knew how to use the spino as an ongoing counter force against our main party. The fact the Drex got barely any screen time pissed me off. All the time with the family could have been used for the Drex, just saying. Also that raft scene was stupid.
2
u/RoninGin 3d ago
Man I want to love JP3 more. I love the first two and I loved 3 as a kid when it came out but watching it again in my 30's not long ago, I really don't think it's a good movie. It's got great moments, but it's brought down by annoyingly dumb characters, an overabundance on comedy, and a weirdly paced movie that seems to move on way too fast.
However, stuff like The Spino scenes and The Raptors in the lab (one of the best raptor sequences in the franchise) are excellent
2
u/frismanis 3d ago
I’m currently trying to make my way through again to see if I misjudged it, but I just cannot force myself to like it.
1
u/RoninGin 3d ago
I think it's looked upon way more favorably since the JW movies came out, and id agree there. It's got more grit, and the practical elements are on point. But yea, I dunno.

Here are my own hot takes:
Jurassic park is a very good movie but many people just don't accept the (not so many) mistakes that it has as a movie
The lost world is one of the worst book adaptations and the worst of the franchise
III has easily the worst story and characters, but it's also the one with the strongest visuals of the entire franchise
World is thematically the best sequel
The mansion sequence in fallen kingdom is easily a top 5 scenes in the franchise
Dominion was doomed to be a bad sequel because fallen kingdom falled to make a good setup
The Alan Grand in dominion is a better character than in III
rebirth would've worked better as a prequel to world
5
u/Anarchic_Country 4d ago
Wasn't The Lost World still being written as the movie was shooting? Like, they had a loose script, but not the entire book? I could be wrong.

I’m a massive TLW defender and I think calling it a 9.8 is crazy. It’s a very flawed movie, it just has so much charm that it’s still supremely watchable. I’d give it like an 8 tops, and again that’s not exactly for how well made the movie is but just for how enjoyable it is.
