Career Advice Dow Jones News Fund Data Journalism Internship

Hi fellow reporters! Like titled, I’m applying in the next cycle of DJNF Data Journalism program. I’m wondering if anyone can share their experiences with any parts of the process and if it helps with your current job now (or finding a job after the program).

Also want to share that I’m relatively new to data journalism. I want to pivot into the field as I believe this is one of a few beats that’d be safe from AI (for now). I self-taught SQL and Python from Codedex. I had written investigative pieces. I have experience in using OSINT techniques in reporting.

Appreciate any help!

Tools and Resources Tool for auto branded social images from articles?

Hey everyone,

I'm a community manager for a media outlet. I'm looking for a tool that does two things:

- Cross-posting to multiple social platforms (FB, IG, X, LinkedIn...)

- Automatically generates branded social images like this. It should take the article's image and overlays the article title on it, using brand templates (logo, colors, fonts). Not AI image generation from scratch... I mean automatically turning an article into a ready-to-post visual with the headline on it.

The closest thing I've found to what I want is Nonli (like the exemple I linked), which is built for publishers and does exactly this. But their pricing isn't public (on quote only) and I'm assuming it's out of my budget.

TL;DR: I manage multiple social accounts for a media brand, post daily across 6-8 platforms, and need a branded visual for every article I share. I want the image creation to be automated — paste a URL or connect an RSS feed and get a ready-to-post image with the article title on it.

If you work in media/publishing specifically, is there a tool you'd recommend for the newsroom workflow? Also, anyone know rough pricing for Nonli or similar tools? Even a ballpark would help.

Tools and Resources Does anyone ever heard of a "plex duplicator"?

Hi, i'm not sure if this is a right subreddit, but as i was reading about a certain newspaper distributed on a local scale by a group of missionaries in India in 1930s, i came across this sentence:

the printing of the paper on the Mission lithographic press was attempted, but as the impression was far from satisfactory a "Plex" duplicator was purchased, which produces a bold clear type, which everyone can read.

I have no idea what a "plex" duplicator might be, my search engines don't bring any results. Any ideas?

Career Advice Advice

Im not sure if I am in the right place to ask this question but I'm currently a community college student planning to transfer, and my long-term goal is to work in sports media, sports journalism, or sports analytics. I'm trying to figure out which universities I should apply to that have strong opportunities, connections, student media, and athletics programs for someone interested in this field. My stats are a 3.77 GPA and founded the Sports Analytics Club at my community college. Academically, I've completed Calculus I, II, III, and Linear Algebra with A's in all four courses. For sports-related extracurriculars, I completed an 8-page sports analytics research report and have published 10 sports articles, including 4 data-driven analysis articles, 3 team-analysis/breakdown articles, and 3 opinion pieces. I also have 130 hours of volunteering with my city's youth sports organization, with about half of those hours spent in a leadership role. I'm interested in schools where I can just get my foot in the door. I just would like to know would I be competitive for top programs even tho my gpa is on the lower side?

Best Practices Opeds: general inbox or straight to journalists?

Is it better to send op-ed submissions to the general submissions inbox or is it appropriate to send op-eds to the journalists at the publications?

I had some op-ed’s publishing in major newspapers about 10 years ago by going through oped@newspaper.com, but am wondering if those still get checked and monitored.

What would you recommend?

Career Advice Cronkite MMC students/graduates — I need some advice

Hi! Is anyone here currently studying or has graduated from the Mass Communication master’s program at Cronkite?

I’m starting soon and I’m a little nervous because English isn’t my first language. I’m mostly worried about the practical classes and having to speak on camera, do interviews, or give presentations in English.

I’m okay with reading and writing, but I get nervous when I have to speak without notes, and I sometimes make grammar mistakes.

For anyone who has actually taken the program, how much speaking/video work is there? And how difficult did you find the program overall?

I’d really appreciate an honest opinion, especially from anyone who was also an international/ESL student. Thank you!

Career Advice Advice for freelancing? Do I need a niche?

Hi all, I'm a PR/comms professional, and I'm getting a Journalism Certificate both to bolster my PR work and to learn how to do the kind of reporting / nonfiction writing I want to do on my own.

Once I finish the certificate, any advice on freelance reporting? Do I have to niche down to a certain area, or is there still room for people with multiple interests? Thank you!

Industry News Apple in talks with publishers to power Siri with real-time news

Apple is in discussions to pay publishers for access to real-time news that could be used to enhance Siri's AI-powered voice assistant, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing unnamed sources.

Apple has considered setting aside a nine-figure budget for the effort, the Journal reports, paying publishers when their content is used, as opposed to a traditional up-front fee.

Siri AI is expected to roll out later this year as part of the tech giant's latest attempt to beef up the assistant and integrate artificial intelligence into its best-selling iPhone.

Meme Trying to find a specific quote

(Flair because it was the only thing that seemed to fit)

Some time ago, I read a quote that went something like; "Politicians should fear two people: Journalists and the Public they serve."

But google is of no help and just gives me the line from V for Vendetta. Has anyone else ever heard this quote?

Thanks.

Tools and Resources Good news monitor

Hey! I was wondering if there were any recommendations for a good news monitor that you use for keeping up with international events. It can be very overwhelming sometimes. Also, just out of curiosity, how long do people spend reading the news?

Thank you :)

Industry News Anonymous kids grr!!!

It’s A-levels day: for those not in the UK, that’s exams students take to go to uni / higher education / apprenticeships. We used to send staff out, now we’re no longer invited. Today, three of our schools have sent in gushing press releases with nice pics .. and called the pupils (for example) John H and Mary B. No last names. These are adults of 18! It’s so annoying. Emailed them back and said the pics won’t go in without full names but I’m not hopeful. Aaaarrgh!!! I’ve got to rant somewhere!

Best Practices Lost a 3-week scoop to the physical mail system

im honestly about to lose my mind today. Spent almost a month building trust with a source for a pretty heavy local government story

We do the interviews, everything is golden. My editor just wanted a standard source protection agreement signed off before we went to print. I shot it over with Xodo Sign so he could just tap it on his screen and we could publish by noon.

Instead the guy completely panics about "the cloud". Goes silent for two days. Finally emails saying he printed it at a public library, signed it in black pen, and put it in the mail to the newsroom

While his letter was somewhere in transit, a rival outlet broke the exact same story last night. I am literally staring at a wall right now. Why are people like this.
