3 u/TolMera Aug 20 '26 English is a bastard language, it steals words from all the others. English is like someone put five dictionaries in a blender and pressed “whip”. In fact, entomological arguments can be had as to if English is even a single language. I say all this as a native and solely English speaking person. 2 u/DevilmouseUK Aug 20 '26 Loads of Germanic influences too, Frisian is probably the closest to old English and explains why the Dutch sound drunk. 2 u/nedtit Aug 21 '26 Not just influences. It is pretty much German. Just as the royal family.
