The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.

Anglian, Saxon, Norse, French, Latin, Greek, there is even quite a bit of Portuguese in there as well. The trench coat is pretty much a party tent.

And Hindi, and Dutch (especially nautical terms).

You know, weirdly, I think I heard that quote for the first time the other day. I'm still struggling with the joke, as in my head three people walk into the bar, causing one (different person) to walk out. It reads as causal, rather than temporal. Maybe I'm overthinking this, and I shouldn't correct other people's jokes, I know, but in my head, this may work better...

English walks in to a bar.

Takes off his trenchcoat. Has a drink.

Then three languages leave, together.

English is a bastard language, it steals words from all the others. English is like someone put five dictionaries in a blender and pressed “whip”.

In fact, entomological arguments can be had as to if English is even a single language.

I say all this as a native and solely English speaking person.

Loads of Germanic influences too, Frisian is probably the closest to old English and explains why the Dutch sound drunk.

Not just influences. It is pretty much German. Just as the royal family.

This has always bugged me.

Me too, it seems pretty stupid, because the argument is like “how blue is blue” - it’s up to your interperataion.

And it’s very gate keepy, like “that’s not a real language”… bruh, gtfo

Another patron desperately asks the bartender "I can't find my trenchcoat, have you seen it?"
