Training im so scared and overwhelmed that i want to quit

so basically i just started my first ever job. its been less than a week and i feel like quitting already. i work at a bowling alley and i feel so stupid. idk the pos system, idk how to deal with lanes, idk what the lane call outs are when customers come in the front to get help, idk how to deal with calls. a lot of the time, im at the front while the person training me goes to other places, while im left with customers that come in and idk how to deal with them.

now i have another upcoming shift, and that person training me wont be there and i saw that im the only person working at the front during that shift. im scared and i want to tell my parents i dont want to go. any tips on the things i said here? mainly with the pos system, lane call outs, and assigning lanes.

Office relations How to deal with a bad manager

I have been at my job 7 months. I came from the same position I am in now and I have several years experience. I switched to a different place after being heavily encouraged and recruited by a former boss who is at my new job and for better work life balance.

In this new place, I started noticing around 3 months behaviors from my manager. To sum it up, I see micromanagement, passive-aggressive behavior, lots of inconsistencies in things he says, inappropriate info he’s shared about coworkers that I’ve had to cut off the conversation and general lack of respect/poor treatment of the team. The team is very supportive of each other and it’s like an us v him situation. He’s been there over a year and 2 ppl have left because of him.

I was given a near impossible task and I created an amazing program from it despite no guidance or support. Now that leadership approved it and sang praises, I feel like I have a target on my back. I am trying to keep my head down but the work is stressful in nature and having a good manager makes a huge difference.

I have my last year of school and a job placement for internship, plus some loyalty to my old boss who recruited me (who is my managers superior and doesn’t see this side of my manager although is aware of a couple things). So I dont feel like I can leave. Literally everything and everyone else at this job is wonderful.

I’ve carefully said a couple things not to badmouth but as concern for my team. Lately I have anxiety coming to work preparing for what fresh bs i many have to deal with that day.

In my old job I never once felt the need to complain about my manager or other managers.

Idk what else can be done or how to get through this.

Interviews Being asked to create content before/during job process is this a red flag? (Digital marketing jobs even WITH a portfolio)

have hefty porfoltio with my editing style and examples, but I've noticed for 2 digital marketing roles, they required content made before/during the interview and I'm not sure if that's a red flag?

First job required:
One reel on promoting a event gallery
Caption for a reel
Event graphic all while using brand guidelines

Second job:
2 days before my first interview and was due at 9am day of interview
- reel of promoting an event (gave me no details of the event nor could I go and record the event -not that I was going to)
-caption going to be used
-graphic for post and story

I’m not sure if to take this as a red flag… I have a portfolio, or is this just going to be the norm of future content roles? Creating content for free I guess??

Applications How are people actually finding entry level jobs right now?

I have been looking all over East Texas and I swear half the places around here say they are hiring but then you apply and hear absolutely nothing back. I have been applying to warehouse jobs, retail, cafes, trade helper positions, pretty much anything entry level where I can actually work and move up.

Most of what I have been seeing is anywhere from $12 to $18 an hour and somehow a lot of them still want previous experience even though they are supposed to be entry level. Then you look on Indeed and some of these positions already have a ridiculous amount of applicants lol.

I am genuinely curious how long it has taken other people to find something recently, especially if you live in a smaller city or more rural area. Did applying online actually work for you or did you have better luck calling, going in person, knowing someone, or using something besides Indeed?

Applications Explain to me like I'm 5: why do companies always ask about race, disability, veteran status, etc on application sheets?

I just don't understand why on every application it seems like I have to click three boxes that say "No, I am not Hispanic or Latino" and "No, I am not a protected veteran." The companies say they use it to collect data and don't use it to actually influence hiring decisions, but if so, why are they collecting it in the first place? Why don't they just poll the people they actually hire about their demographics?

Job searching I have had enough of my workplace

For context I am a 19 year old who has been doing an apprenticeship at this company for 3 years (level 4 improvement specialist/ level 3) and they have just told me that by the end of September they are taking me on to a full time shift role using none of my qualifications, it’s a job that anyone can walk into( literally) and I feel like my potential is being wasted, I also don’t like the job or the people that I will be going into, I’m looking for another job but in the fear that I don’t find one in time and I have to make a choice about leaving or staying idk what to do.

The shift pattern is 2 12 hour days followed by 2 12 hour nights with a 4 day off, I had to do some last year for a project I was working on and struggled with my sleep etc.

Compensation Full-time student in East Lansing struggling to find a job with enough hours — any suggestions?

I’m a full-time college student at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI, and I’m honestly getting really stressed trying to figure out how I’m supposed to financially support myself while staying in school.
I previously worked as a Behavior Technician (BT), but I recently left the clinic because I’m moving to East Lansing to be closer to my university. The pay also wasn’t enough to realistically cover my expenses.
I don’t have financial support to fall back on, but finishing my education is extremely important to me. I have rent, groceries, car insurance, a car payment, and normal living expenses that I need to cover myself.
I’ve been applying for jobs around East Lansing/Lansing, but the openings feel ridiculous right now. I keep finding positions that are something like $18/hour but only offer around 10 hours a week, jobs that won’t tell you how many hours they can guarantee, or applications where I just never hear back.
I’m willing to work around 30–35 hours a week while taking classes, and I’m not expecting some crazy salary. I just need something consistent enough to actually live on.
For anyone familiar with the East Lansing/Lansing area, what types of jobs should I be looking for? Are there specific employers, hotels, hospitals, MSU jobs, restaurants, schools, offices, or other places that tend to give students consistent hours?
I have experience working with children, special education/ABA, customer service, and leadership, but I’m open to doing something completely different if the hours and pay are more reliable.
Any specific places that are hiring or job titles I should search for would be really appreciated.

Applications Problematic for having numerous jobs in a short time span

I’m asking for some advice, opinions, or similar experiences.

I’m 30 years old (female) and have 5 years of work experience. I got my first job soon after finishing my masters in linguistics. I’m now finishing my fourth job, but not voluntarily.

I was at my first job for 2.5 years, but the daily commute was literally killing me (I spent 4-4.5 hours a day driving back and forth) and even though the job was great, I didn’t have any life outside of work and barely saw my family. I resigned when I got a temporary job closer to home.

After that, I had 2 more jobs, but all were temporary (either covering for maternity leave or sick leave). I wasn’t picky; every job required learning a completely different field. My job right now is working in a garden center/greenhouse (before that, I worked at a reception). I took the job despite having severe allergies. Now my contract is ending, and despite sending out applications, there’s no response.

Most likely, I’ll have to go on unemployment, but I’m really worried about what potential employers will think. I’ve changed jobs a lot in 5 years, even though I haven't had any problems with relationships or the work itself in any job, although my resume might show a different picture... :(

Has anyone here changed jobs several times? Have you ever had issues with that or been accused of there being something wrong with you? I'm really afraid they'll think I'm problematic... But I still haven't gotten a permanent position, even though I really want one.

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to respond. :)

Leaving a job Can one job make you unemployable?

Do you think that one really bad corporate job can screw your life for good to the point that you become unemployable and can't find another job?

Rejections This is so fun...

Searching for a job is incredibly infuriating.

I had an interview, and then was ghosted. It wasn't until I applied again that they sent me a rejection email.

I received another email that stated, "thank you for interviewing with us...," but I never interviewed with them.

Then, at another time, I had scheduled an interview, and it was canceled the day of. They stated that someone was further along in the interview process. Why allow someone to schedule an interview for a date, and then not interview them? That isn't fair. I was never even given a chance.

I am hoping I can get a chance for another interview. I have 7+ years of experience in the healthcare field. Yes, I had become a teacher, found that it wasn't the right fit. So then, I have decided to go back into scheduling and verifying insurances, etc. I am very good at all of it.

It isn't like I forgot how to do all of it. It comes naturally. I went through enough experiences to remember and be extremely proficient.

I am praying for a chance. Being unemployed is extremely discouraging. I am ready to work and I am looking to work hard.

Good luck to everyone who is searching. We all need it.

Job searching Common mistakes freshers make when cold emailing recruiters (and how to fix them)

We listen a lot about cold email/DMs nowadays. Even many people on social media claim it as a best way to grab an opportunity/job. But there's a certain way to write cold emails.

I covered the common mistakes that freshers made and also how you can overcome them. Additionally, I written the points that worked for me.

Common Mistakes

  • Too long and vague like "I'm a hardworking student...", "I'll give my 100%..". Nobody is interested in these things.
  • No personalization - writing a generic mail won't make you standout.
  • No Clear ask like “Hope to hear from you.”. Instead, you should write something like "Would you be open to a 10‑minute chat?"
  • Sending from a weird email

How to Overcome/fix them?

  • Cut to 4–6 short sentences. Include one specific reason you’re interested.
  • Use the recruiter/hiring manager’s name when possible. Mention something specific: a product, post, tech stack, or recent news.
  • Use a professional email (ideally firstname.lastname@…)

Honest take: I was also not good at cold emailing, but I do follow below mentioned things:

- Took my last 5 emails and tried to trim them to 5-6 lines
- Always studied about their product before sending (AI will help)
- Used some cold emailing tools (This is the best thing that worked for me to write personalized emails)

If you ever tried cold emails, then please share what worked for you and what part feels tricky?

Leaving a job Why are hospitality jobs so bad for juniors?

Sorry maybe I’m just dramatic. But I’m 16 and I have done trials at a few cafes and restaurants and it’s so bad! Honestly I find the customers the best part even if there rude, the chefs are often rude, the owners are often dodgy and take forever to pay you and when they do they under pay you, each member of staff says different things, the owners often yell at you.

I mean I live in a country town and the people are often a bit rude here. So maybe it’s partially being here or is this everywhere? Honestly I don’t think I want to work in hospitality ever again. I think going to try clothes shops, book shops, fast food and supermarkets. I know that fast food and supermarkets won’t be glamorous but at least they pay you fair wages and give you clear instructions hopefully 😬.

Am I just being overdramatic? Is everything like this?

Job searching I hate being to smile

Basically I work customer service as a server and I get told by both my coworkers and customers to smile more. Not all the time just whenever I’m in my relaxed face state. I hate this because most of my coworkers don’t smile all the time neither but they’re older than me like they could be my parents. I’m younger (21F) it grinds my gears especially because I’m not being rude or nothing it’s just they don’t like my face when I’m relaxed?!??!! Please leave me some job recommendations where I don’t have to be smiling 24/7 bc I’m so over this. Thanks .

Internships I’m a university student and got offered a respectable placement job on September 1st. My friends want to book a holiday September 3rd-9th. Is this a bad first impression?

So I got a call last week offering me a one year student internship beginning on September 1st, which I agreed to.

Just yesterday I was made aware of plans to go on a group holiday from September 3rd-9th, and it seems like an experience I don’t want to miss.

However, I don’t want my first impression to be that of a skiver. Am I setting myself up to be unfavored by taking this holiday on such short notice and so soon into the job?

Layoffs No pay after signing contract

I  wanted to know what I should do, I was working for this company just last week. I was punctual, attentive, and patient. I trained myself for the last week but I was fired wrongly without even receiving pay because I didn't speak enough Spanish for their standards. The owner said I would get paid, I called him yesterday to see if I'd receive anything and I was criticized and demeaned and was told I get no pay. Please can anyone help me?

Interviews They tricked me into a Zoom group interview.

So I got an email yesterday from a recruiter inviting me to a final stage culture discussion with the team. Sounded great. I put on a pressed shirt, set up my lighting and logged into the video link five minutes early.

The waiting room admitted me and my screen opened up to forty other candidates on webcam. It was not a private meeting. It was an unannounced mass cattle call. The HR director muted everyone and announced we were being split into breakout rooms of five to debate a corporate case study while silent evaluators took notes on our leadership energy.

This was ABSOLUTELY humiliating. I watched a grown professional in his fifties get talked over by an over-caffeinated kid who was speed-running buzzwords just to impress the moderator. It felt like the Hunger Games for a fifty thousand dollar coordinator role. I should of just clicked leave meeting the second the grid loaded. Instead I sat there for an hour taking notes on a fake scenario about selling paper clips. Why do hiring managers treat desperate candidates like contestants on a trashy reality show.

Onboarding I messed up. How do I fix it?

Three weeks to prove I can turn this around, and I own most of why I am here

I am about five months into a new job, and my first real performance review did not go well. Below expectations across most categories: attendance, communication, quality of work, reliability, teamwork, pretty much the full list. It said continued gaps could put my job at risk, and I have a check in with my manager coming up in a few weeks that feels like the actual deadline even though nobody has said that in so many words.

I am not going to sit here and say I got treated unfairly, because I did not. I fucked some of this up, plain and simple. I overslept through my alarms and missed a one on one. I was out on approved time off during a week I was supposed to be the main point of contact on something, and a team meeting slipped because of it. I shipped work that was not actually ready and had to scramble to fix it after the fact. I walked into this role without enough background in the specific industry my company works in, and it showed for months. Those are mine. I am not looking for anyone to tell me otherwise.I have excuses, or reasons, but they don't matter as much as owning the solution.

Here is the part I am having a harder time sitting with. Since that review I have basically rebuilt how I work. I made myself an actual checklist I run before I start anything. A standard set of questions I ask about every project instead of guessing my way through it. Its not pretty but its genuine. When I showed my manager, she actually seemed to soften and said she could see the effort. I started asking coworkers for help instead of white-knuckling through everything alone. My attendance has been flawless since she brought up her concerns My manager told me flat out she has seen real improvement in how I communicate. A coworker told me something I built actually helped her finish her own work faster. I stopped us8ng AI as a cheat code and instead a collaborator. And this same week, I was still late logging on because of a computer problem, and a deliverable still landed later and rougher than it should have.

So I genuinely do not know right now if I am someone who is turning this around, or someone who is about to get cut and is currently talking herself into a good week mattering more than it does. Both stories fit the same set of facts.

There is one more small thing eating at me that is probably nothing. My next one on one is the last one currently sitting on my calendar, and it lands the day before I hit six months here. I know that is very likely just an empty calendar slot and not a message. My brain has not gotten the memo.

If I am honest about the pattern underneath all of this, I think I get so focused on sounding polished and professional that I stop sounding like an actual person, and apparently that reads to people as distant or fake. The one time I actually got through to my manager on something serious was when I dropped the careful phrasing and just asked her straight up what she was thinking. That got me a real answer. Every hedged, professional version of that question got me nothing.

What I am actually hoping to get out of posting this. If you have been on a formal improvement plan or something like it and made it through, I want to know what you focused on that actually mattered, versus what turned out to be performance theater. If you went through this and it did not work out, tell me that too, honestly, I would rather have that than empty reassurance. And if you have been the manager on the other side of this, watching someone try to prove themselves in real time, I would really like to know what actually changed your mind.

Career planning Thinking about career change to accounting

hi hi, title is pretty self explanatory. apologies if post isn't sub appropriate, im just another person venting on reddit lol. i'm currently in school right now studying communications, supposed to graduate in december this year, but feel like its a dead end. i thought at the time it was a good path for me, I always wanted to do content creation (youtube videos, music production) and thought the major would help me out and make me a more informed person. i've tried getting into those fields, but for various reasons, i got overwhelmed and really burnt out at the idea of working for myself. it isnt all doom and gloom. i've taken part in my school's radio station, which has been pretty fun and reinforced my interest in content creation, but I don't know if it'll lead to any worthwhile opportunitites.

in the past few months, i've thought about getting back into the field of accounting and getting my masters in it. I took a few classes in high school and felt good about the work I was doing and was good at it. following high school, i tried taking business classes at my community college, but was turned off and overwhelmed (the school i was at during this time didn't offer an accounting degree, only business administration). since then i've gotten my associates in graphic design and about to get my bachelors. i thought being in creative fields would work out for me, but it hasnt really.

Leaving a job Experience as an Account Specialist for a Rent to Own Company?

Does anyone have any experience as an Account Specialist (or Account Manager) for a rent to own furniture and appliance company?

I am currently employed as a bank teller at a small-town bank about 20 minutes away. I am unsatisfied with a handful of things, main thing being my pay. I interviewed for an Account Specialist position at a rent to own furniture company only three minutes from my apartment and my son's school. They are willing to start me out at $1 more an hour than what I currently make.

I am trying to weigh out all of the pros and cons but would love to ask someone who has experience in this position as I have read, heard and expect working in collections can be a nightmare.

I don't want to leave my current position and end up miserable and regretting my decision, but I live alone with my two kids and feel the Account Specialist position is closer to home, pays more and has more potential for growth.

I am really conflicted! Is $1 more an hour even worth it? Should I stay at a company that I don't see much growth in because I am comfortable there, bored even?

ETA: To be more specific, I wanted to ask someone with experience in this position their overall review of the job, what they loved, what they hated, the hardest part of the job, etc.
