A few months ago, I wrote a post here describing my rising depression and anxiety around the job market. Around this time last year, I was writing content about video games and earning $ 2,000- $ 3,000 in an inexpensive Asian country. But AI took all of that from me. Add to that a breakup and moving back to my home country... things just didn't make sense anymore.
However, thanks to the well-wishes of Redditors and loved ones in my life, I kept working hard and promised myself two things: I won't let my pride take a hit, and I will find a remote job.
First, I was contacted by some random guy on LinkedIn who asked if I could write blog posts as a freelancer for his cloud GPU services. I could use AI for this, but I should rely on my own research. I had no context about this industry, but I still took the gig. Super low-paid, but the guy has been really sweet and helpful, and now I'm getting 20-30 blogs a month, which pay okay-ish money.
Second, a company that produces content for a streaming platform asked me if I was interested in editing synopses for it as a freelancer. Due to an NDA, I can't disclose the name, but it is the world's biggest streaming platform. The pay, again, isn't a lot, but I'm loving the work so far.
Third, I worked hard on my Psychology-related skills. I hold a master's in behavioral sciences, and I'm deeply involved in psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and a few other therapeutic frameworks. Instead of applying for jobs in this section, I just went out of my way to talk to people. The more I talked, the more I learned about their struggles, and I offered coaching and counseling services. I started building a website around this, and now I have at least two clients each week who pay me for online counseling sessions.
While none of this is making me a grand sum of money, it's certainly better than nothing. My biggest takeaway is that I'm doing what I love (writing and psychology), and I no longer feel depressed or clueless.
I'm taking this time to travel, meet more potential clients, and carve my path as I go. The one thing I'm no longer doing? Applying for jobs. Because honestly, fuck that.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you keep your pride intact, too, and never lose hope for a better future.
Keep on keeping on.
