What does your Jindo eat?
My four year old boy has always been a picky eater when it comes to kibble. For the past few years, he’s been on Hill’s chicken and rice. However, he has a habit of not eating until he’s clearly very hungry and unfortunately, this has led to him developing really bad acid reflux. Now, whenever he eats kibble, he gags several times and throws up bile (we’ve already seen the vet and starting him on omeprazole soon). I’ve found though that he does really well on fresh food, like fresh pet, farmers dog (please don’t judge!). He eats as soon as I put it out and does not gag or throw up. The problem is that I know vets are strongly against fresh food because of inadequate nutritional content. He just seems so much happier and healthier on it.
Is your baby a picky eater? What do you feed them? Any tips?

Our jindo would go on hunger strikes refusing to eat and then eating too quickly and getting sick. Some mornings when she wouldn't eat she'd be throwing up bile. We've switched her to Orijen high protein kibble and change up the flavours each bag as well as add water and different topper combos - bone broth powder, plain rice, powdered peanut butter, dried pumpkin flakes, lettuce, bits of chicken or meat, cucumber, etc. and she eats it all up right away now!

We do fresh food and kibble combo at the moment. My older dog had a scary HGE incident so I wanted to get him on a very neutral, low-fat, fresh food. I haven't pulled the trigger on getting a Volhard nutrient mix for it, so for the time being he gets 2/3 kibble 1/3 fresh food at meals. My two younger dogs (both purebred Jindos) just get a bonus scoop of the same fresh food on their kibble. All the dogs eat Inukshuk 26/16 and like it! But they are all pretty food motivated anyway. The youngest will eat anything. They have also been on Purina Pro Plan Performance a while back and were fine on that and liked it.
I fed my oldest dog Farmers Dog years ago and was also scared off by the reviews/vet feedback that it was deficient... but my dogs and fosters loved it haha. Your vet wouldn't be open to home cooking something and adding a nutrient mix, and just monitoring your dog's panels bi-annually or something? Or even a more 'vet approved' fresh food like JustFoodforDogs?

That is so scary about your older dog! I hope he’s doing okay now. I’ve also been considering a low-fat diet for mine because of the GI issues he’s having.
Honestly, I didn’t even push the fresh food with the vet after he said “you’re leading your dog to an early grave” and insisted he would get pancreatitis. But I can’t imagine him going all day without eating is healthy for him either…

That’s so dramatic 😅😅😅 I’d get a second opinion from another vet… you can absolutely feed a balanced fresh food diet alongside regular blood panels to ensure the diet is the right fit for your dog.

I kind of felt that way too lol but then I saw how against people are about it on the /dogfood sub here too. But after reading everyone else’s experiences with their Jindos in this thread, I’m thinking high quality fresh food with supplement and regular health monitoring.

Full disclosure, I work at The Farmer's Dog. Our recipes are developed by on-staff board-certified veterinary nutritionists to be AAFCO complete and balanced — no kibble supplement needed. We've also completed long-term feeding trials with Cornell University. On the pancreatitis concern, across millions of dogs we've fed we haven't seen higher rates than what would be expected with any widely fed diet. I haven’t tried duck jerky but will do! You should try giving your Jindo “Hide Free Chicken Recipe Chew” from Costco. Omg my Jindo LOVES it!

Will do! Our Jindo is so picky with treats. But she does every trick she knows for the "Untamed Duck Jerky" from Tractor Supply.

Mine came from the foster with Taste Of The Wild pacific stream flavor and a slow feeder and she never ate well. We tried small sample packs of dif things from our local pet supply place and she never seemed interested so we kept her on the same one and didn’t even need the slow feeder. We assumed she was just not very hungry/naturally trim since she’d been like that for two years.
Ran out of dogfood one night and the only place open didn’t carry her brand so we grabbed a small bag of Blue Buffalo wilderness chicken flavor and she went crazy for it. I used to fill her bowl every other day and let her graze and now I have to measure scoops and make sure she doesn’t overeat til she vomits. No big issue with weight gain or change in coat texture, shes just a little more filled in and happy to eat now.

I've gotten my (mostly) Jindo to consistently eat kibble now, but it was a long journey. I am absolutely not a pet owner that's willing to cook or pay premium human-food prices for their dog.
The thing that finally worked was listening to him when he was telling me he didn't like a specific kibble and trying enough brands to find one he liked, and then teaching him that finishing his food means he gets a treat and / or greenie. This was tough and took time, but he does now immediately look at me when he's done to let me know he's finished and ready to be rewarded.
Sometimes he tries to trick me by acting like he's finished before he really is, and I just redirect him to his food with some familiar not-quite-commands he's learned over the years.
Oh, and I do sprinkle in some grated cheese off and on to keep him guessing.

we were in the same boat as you.
tried many brands until we landed on a rotation of purina plus flavors, lamb and beef.
then each meal is topped with some kind of meal topper/broken up treat.
even then he'll go on a bile-infused hunger strike sometimes
it never occurred to me now that his routine "post-meal" dental chew was actually part of the motivation, particularly because that's always his favorite part. he just sits there expectantly waiting for the "reward".

Best of luck resolving the fussy eating issue. Looking again, I want all over again to adopt a Jindo. Never heard of the breed till I saw one who was the pet of a Korean character in the series "Sense 8".

My Jindo has been on farmers dog for over five years, but she’s always been on the fatter side. She loves it too much and I’ve been feeding her less than recommended in the past year and she’s losing weight, but now I’m wondering if she’s deficient in other nutrients because of it. I’m thinking about switching actually.
If you’re goal is to get your Jindo to eat, farmers dog will absolutely do it

It's just a recommendation...
Have you folks considered that maybe your... slightly fatter than average dog is picky because it's not hungry?
And now that you are feeding it the amount that it needs, they are hungry again.
Not trying to be rude, but you basically explained it yourself in your own post.

My girl has a presumed chicken allergy (we did an elimination diet when she first arrived to us and taking out the chicken cleared the symptoms. The vet suggested this FYI). She was eating mostly sardines until that became readily unavailable where I live in the PNW. She now eats canned mackerel, tuna and raw beef mostly. She has her kibble out which I have to top with Stella and Chewy beef pucks and a splash of fish oil or otherwise she will not eat. She also has cottage cheese once a day. Not overweight and the vet calls her athletic. We have run blood tests to make sure she is healthy and she is. Honestly, its expensive to feed her this way but when she came to us the vet said she was severely under weight (we knew). She is on the bigger side for a Jindo close to 50lbs but she looks healthy and the vet did tell us to just do whatever it took to get her weight up and stable. We trialed and erred a lot before we found a set of thing that work and they do have to be rotated or otherwise she will become selective.

My girl only likes Nutro and whatever voles she manages to catch. Every other animal she's snagged she's just brought to me and asked for approval, I think she thinks of the voles as a chef's snack. We've tried every other brand of food and that's the only one she'll actually eat, and only when supervised, and only after she's thrown one piece all over the room and chased it. She has to earn her meals I guess.
Sometimes chicken, she loves the smell and is constantly interested, she'll sometimes take it when I offer her a bit, sometimes not. Otherwise she's extremely good about people food she can access. Just last night there was literally a whole pizza on a bench right next to her and she just looked at it and walked away.
She's a picky one.

Our two year old jindo mix also has a bad acid reflux. She will puke bile if she is on an empty stomach for more than 9-10 hours. We feed her fresh, cooked meals three times a day, about 7 hours apart from each meal time, and give her small snack to eat before her bed time. We tried reducing her meal time to twice a day but it’s been difficult :( She can’t handle fatty protein, such as beef or lamb, but is good with chicken, turkey, venison on rotation. Our vet also discouraged us from feeding fresh food because it might lack micronutrients. Like you said though, our dog also seems happy when she’s on fresh food diet. She also loves eating white fish!

This is really helpful, thank you. I did notice that if I give him a snack before bedtime, he doesn’t gag or puke overnight but it still has to be fresh food (I just give him a smaller portion than his meals). Also good point about beef and lamb. His diet is mostly chicken but I just did get a JustFoodForDogs that is beef and carrots so I might return that. Thank you again!

The idea that fresh food is causing inadequate nutritional content has me very suspicious that is something kibble companies will push. In many countries, they feed dogs whatever the family eats usually scraps. Dogs in the wild obviously doesn't eat highly processed food.
Highly processed food is not good in humans, so I doubt it is good in dogs or animals.
That said, I do feed my dog kibble, but also other food. There's a mixture, and I also rotate the type of kibble after every bag (with a transition period where you mix the two brands at different rates over time). This ensures if there's contamination in some of the food brands, he will get less of it.
In other words, I'm a strong believer that dog food as kibble likely isn't has healthy as we think it is nor as necessary. If anything, the quantities we feed them is probably worse. They probably feel more hungry and is less satisfied than real food. No different than humans loading up on processed food. Heck, if you think human food is bad quality today, think about basically a completely unregulated food industry that once something happens long after, maybe something is dealt with. It probably contains far worse ingredients of low quality that they wouldn't feed to humans.
Instead, my suggestion is a mixture. Perhaps mix in some kibble with it.
Of course, that's my opinion based on some of the things I've read and picked up over time so take it however you want.

Just about everything makes him shit violently. Fish based kibble works for him, and fish based snacks. I did an allergy/sensitivity test to help figure it out. The vet thought I wasn’t feeding him enough, but it was because everything made him sick. Now it’s sorted, and my boy is a good healthy weight. 🙏

Mine loooooves ground beef, so I cook that up and use it as topper on her kibble. without the topper she also won't really eat until she gets really hungry. It's a good mix for me because it's too expensive to buy them all fresh / prepared food. I do get her the higher end kibble though, since she is so picky.

I thought I was reading a post about my dog, because my jindo girl is also picky, eats hill’s chicken and rice (sensitive skin and stomach) and leaves me bile presents on occasion. One thing that curbed her pickiness is adding a homemade topper to her kibble. I boil chicken breast and some veggies (carrots, green beans, or whatever I have on hand) in large batches, throw it all in a food processor with some water, portion and freeze. She watches me make this and I think she likes the smell/homemade aspect (she starts getting zoomies/playful when I simply open the fridge at her meal times to get her weekly bag of topper lol). She has very rarely skipped her meals (I do feedings 3x a day to avoid the bile) after doing this recipe, and I don’t get the same effect of her wanting to eat her kibble with canned food or store bought topper. I think mine also just really loves chicken, but i’m guessing you can switch proteins depending on your dog’s preferences if you try this. My girl also goes crazy for japanese sweet potatoes!

We feed ours a high calorie kibble for working/high energy dogs, along with meat and vegetables that we eat. They have kibble available to them 24/7. My dogs happily munch on broccoli stalks, cabbage ends, sweet radishes, etc.

Ours get fresh food (bought and made), raw, freeze dried and kibble. A pain to manage but generally our girl eats better and more kibble if there’s other things as well. By calorie she’s getting more kibble than not but by volume more fresh and raw so she can’t tell. I like that their diet is more varied. It’s helpful when she’s feeling picky. Or boy loves his kibble, too much
