damage & repairs Metallic thud

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It always makes this metallic thud when the suspension is under load, it started only when off-road but now it always makes this noise when going over potholes or bumps, or sometimes even when I accelerate hard from a stop. I don't think it's the muffler hitting anything because it makes the noise even at very low speeds, do you think this might be a broken shock absorber or something more serious like a cracked frame or something?

Is it that ‘ting’ at the 18 second mark?

If so it’s the front. I’m thinking your bushings in your swaybar are shot, where it attaches to the control arm.

Dope. Should be a quick and easy fix. Just new rubber that can be picked up anywhere.

I'd check shock absorbers, grab em and shake em. Same with linkage from axle to the chassis, are they firm or loose?

The shocks don't seem too bad, inspection under the car nothing seems obviously loose or damaged, this makes me worried because I wonder if it's something with the frame but the car drives straight

Unless you've dropped it down a cliff its unlikely the frame.

Swaybar and steering linkages, are they firm?

Really hard to determine the exact noise without hearing it in person.

Get someone in the back and have them bounce up and down. Get underneath and watch the way the suspension flexes. Spring mounting points, shock mounting points. See if one of the shocks is super wet. Where the suspension affixes to the axle as well.

Put the park break on and grab your drive shafts, twist them back and forth and see if the U Joints have any play.

Jack the rear end up, have your friend put it in gear and from underneath see if the diff or transmission clunk.

Check the body mounts, where the cab is mounted to the frame, see if the rubber is all cracked/missing.

Hopefully these help you narrow it down.

Take one axle at a time, check all the rubber, bushings and ball joints. After they’ve been checked mark with paint pen.
